Thanks to Steve Tomisek for suggesting that I post this message here in this thread! As a follow-up to my original personal intro posting, I wanted to post a photo of my all-time favorite set of stamps, the Canada 1897 Queen Victoria Jubilee set. I don't have any real in-depth, research-oriented comments to make about this set, other than to relate my own personal experience about it. Since these stamps are generally not inexpensive, I never came across any of them in my early collecting days, and I only discovered them for myself about 12 years ago or so.
For me, it was "love at first sight"! I couldn't believe that I had been collecting stamps for so long and had completely missed out on the existence of these beautifully designed and executed stamps. I immediately started a decade-long quest to put together a set for my own collection. I settled on collecting unused copies (so that the design would never be obscured), and decided to go for previously hinged or no-gum stamps to make them more affordable--NH copies of these stamps are seriously expensive, I learned.
I also figured out pretty quickly that like so many other 19th century stamps, it was a challenge to find clean, sound, well-centered copies of these stamps. Nothing like a challenge, I thought! I looked through many hundreds of copies of each denomination on the APS Stamp Store until I settled on purchasing a couple. About a year ago, I finally completed my set, with the addition of the $4 stamp. So, no great revelation here, but here is the pride and joy of my collection.
Now I just need to decide what will become my next collecting passion, but I still love looking at these!

Thank you very much for your kind comment, Kirk! I admit that although I am born and raised in the U.S., collecting the Canada 1897 Jubilee issue has gotten me much more interested in classic Canada and Provinces. I will shortly make post in the Canada Leaf issues thread which may also be of interest.
Thanks again!

Thanks for your kind comments, Mad Baker! I must be a bit of a kindred spirit, because in my early days, I also collected worldwide into the early 1970s. But then I got frustrated with keeping up with all of the new issues, and eventually I decided to limit myself to pre-1930.
After making that decision, I divested myself of all of the post-1930 material.
Once I get to the 50 posts, I will take a look at my early Sweden and Scandinavia material and see what I can offer you!

I thought you might like my basic sets of the Jubilees used and mint with a couple color varieties thrown in. None of my re-entries and large multiples included here.

Thanks, Watermark! Very nice! I am also tempted to try to put together a set of used stamps, but since I am not a specialist, that will likely not be a priority. But if I come across some nice used copies at reasonable prices, who knows?
By the way, what kind of mounts are you using? These look a bit like an old type that were called "Crystal Mounts" which I used early in my collecting days, but those were outstripped in popularity by the ShowGard style, and went out of production. Anyway, I have not seen mounts like the ones in your photo in a long time....
Thanks again for sharing--very nice complete sets!

Some of the mounts are Crystal Mounts which eventually were phased out or renamed. They are now available under the brand name Perma Guard Stamp Mounts by Westvaco, Spingfield, MA. At least that is what is on my packages. I bought a bulk quantity years ago but the mounts are still available. They are crystal clear archival quality mounts.

As a point of interest for those using the blue Scott Int'l or Scott Int'l Jr. album for the Jubilee issues, please see below the first page for Canada from a 1928 edition of the Scott Int'l Jr. album. Note the nice section marked specifically for 10 of the Jubilee stamps.

In interesting contrast to the 1928 Int'l Jr. first Canada page, by the time I got my first Scott Int'l Vol. 1, published in 1969, the spaces for the Jubilee set were disappointingly separated into two sections, one with spaces for 2 stamps on the first page (shown below) with spaces for 8 more stamps at the top of the next page.
Can anyone still using the Scott Int'l Vol. 1 tell me if this is still how the Jubilee set is provided for in the current editions?

Beryllium Guy.. From my Canada post on my blog (I slightly modified it for here).. bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2011/05/canada.html"If you have the '69 or '97 editions (or a later edition currently sold from Amos/Scott), you are probably aware that there was a mistake in the layout of the 1897 Jubilee issue introduced by the '69 editors. (The error is not in the '47 or '41 editions (or earlier).) There are two spaces (an 1/2c illustrated space and a blank space) on the first page, and then on the next page an illustration again for the 1/2c, designated spaces for the 1c, 2c, 3c, and 5c; and then three blank spaces as choices. What to do? 1) Leave blank the "error" spaces. 2) Fill the spaces on the first page with "cheap" Jubilee's. Recommend the 3c ($2+) and the 1c ($5+). I will probably use this strategy as I have a few extra's. 3) Fill the spaces with the "correct" denominations. Costly though :The 1/2c is $110+! 4) Use the opportunity to have even more Jubilee's- choices include Scott 58 15c steel blue ($180+), Scott 59 20c vermilion ($180+), or Scott 60 50c ultramarine ($180+). The Bill Gross approach. Your choice.... ;-)

Thanks for the response, Big Blue. I was unaware that this was a noted editorial error. I checked the publication dates on the two Scott albums, and the first one was 1928 and the second was 1969 (it was purchased in the early 1970s).
Interestingly, comparing those two, the editors did make some improvements by including spaces for both 1898 Christmas stamps and the 10c denomination of the Victoria Leaf issue. It seems strange that after doing that, they managed to make such a mess of the Jubilee issue spaces.
I will check out the link you sent. Thanks again, Big Blue!

I loved how they used this design for QE II Jubilee as well. Quite a fitting match. Well, Kelly, I hope that you will consider this response in the "Better-late-than-never" category. I normally don't collect modern issues, but due to my love for the 1897 QV Jubilee set, I could not resist buying these QEII issues when they were available.

I remember at the time having discussions about this issue. My thoughts then still apply today.........that if the Queen had to approve that issue, then why the heck did she !!?? It is without doubt the most unkind depiction of the Monarch I have ever seen. I know there were a lot of complaints at the time of issue. Just awful. Edited: I meant the older Queen of course, just wanted to clarify that !

I like the design of these Jubilee stamps, showing the young and the old images of the queens, but I must admit that the image of the older QE2 is not great. Victoria certainly fared better. As an admitted sentimentalist, I just like the fact that they resurrected the old QV design as part of the tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. So, I will continue to focus my attention on the overall design, which I like very much, and the 1952 image instead of the 2012 one....

One of the forgotten treasures I found while cleaning out a box is all the stuff I bought for the QEII Jubliee issue. I have bought a lot more than I remembered. Felt like Christmas morning again. I have a few ideas on how I will mount and display.

Actually yes - ironically, I have this s/s specifically because of the Jubilee and matching design but I had never taken that close a look at the older picture of the Queen on this issue. It really *isn't* the most attractive picture she could have chosen. She is a beautiful woman and this likeness does not add up to her beauty, especially marked for her Jubilee. Truly unfortunate.

Peter, that is one great cancel on a Jubilee stamp--thanks for the great post! I love those Canada Jubilees. Would you be willing to re-post the image on the Jubilee thread, too? Please find it here: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/4388/jubilee-issueYou will also see one of my earliest posts on that thread which shows my unused Jubilee set. I like it so much that I have decided to try for a used set, too. As per Beryllium Guy 's request, here is my lone Jubilee with a nice Canada flag cancel. They don't get much better than this! On taking a closer look, I see I have the same broken-off line as firstfrog2013 showed in the 1st post in this thread.

Pete as lovely as it looked in the other thread. Bravo - Cancel is A+ You remember me posting a Sc 85 with a Canada flag cancel, not as nice but it is mine, with the cancel history described with reference
René btw reading the entire thread, I felt the urge to say I have the 1969 Scott International Albums (6) and since it was poorly conceived with missing spaces etc. I decided to do my own custom Canada Pages (based on Unitrade 2018 cat divisions/headings , which I will show some day, this until past 1940s.

Now, I realize the single has been added to this thread, but here is the full pane of 8 of the $2 Jubilee issued May 7, 2012. Unitrade (Scott) #2540 I love this design. I had never considered buying the 1897 set due to the expense, but having read Beryllium Guy's account of how he attained his set, perhaps I'll do the same.

Here is a very rare post office sheet of Plate 6 of the 1c value. There are four different plates used for this value. Very few complete sheets exist today because they were usually torn in half vertically so they would fit in storage draws at the post offices. This is folded twice (center horizontally and vertically to fit in a full page stock book for mint panes. There is some perforation separation but a tough item to find. If you want a rough idea of how big it is take the measurements of an actual stamp and multiply it by 100 and add some extra for the sheet margins.

I like the Whatcha Been Stamping? thread quite a bit, but lots of interesting material gets posted there and never gets re-posted in a place where anyone will be able to find it in the future. Anyway, if you are a patient man, Peter, and your only 1897 Jubilee stamp is the 3-cent, I may be able to help you on your quest. Please send me a PM with your address, and I will promise you a response!

Oh well...the wonderful Jubilee issues - what a nice thread. I haven't seen it before and realize I'm very late to the party - but just have to say it anyway - the Jubilee collections shown above are marvelous, thanks for sharing with us Beryllium Guy & watermark. Never seen such fresh and well-centered range of Jubilees as yours Chris - like you just picked them up directly from the post office Me being me - having an affection for nice postmarks - I must admit Watermarks $5 with that nice SOTN CDS is simply "over the moon". Even if centering is not the best. Without the much more common parcel 'killer' and with such a nice postmark instead - I say WOW!
