Just finalized a couple of out-going trades now. Was up at 1.15AM thinking a mouse was gnawing on something in the kitchen. Then a flash of light appeared & I thought that there was one in the trap! But no, there was a thunderstorm, and large raindrops were splatting against the open window. Close the window, go back to bed, but mice were on my mind. So out of bed at 2 and now on my second coffee of the morning. Don't have to water the garden today!

I worked on Finland yesterday, had a number of MNH stamps I had bought over the past couple of years that replaced used copies. Went through my Finland stockbook and moved several to my trading envelopes. I also worked on a couple of packet trades--2 more ready to go to the Post Office.

Due to the lack of reliable mail service to Ecuador,I have been purchasing stamps and having them sent to my son in California. However, there seems to be some problems with the USPS,mostly in Chicago as mentioned by philatelia .I am missing 7 registered letters from UK and France which were sent in June and early July. The tracking information shows them arriving in Chicago, and no more information. Have a look at this old TSF thread on the registered mail war between Canada & the US some years back. Ryan

Ryan Thanks for the link, very interesting. Things don't seem to have improved much. I have just purchased some stamps from a dealer in England and he advised me to send them to USA by regular airmail, as many registered letters had either disappeared or faced long delivery delays. Acquiring new stamps is becoming more and more challenging every day.

Having seen Morten's ( classicalstamps ) recent postings and his WWII library additions including the text, " The Paper Trail" I was reminded of this exhibit, " Six Stories: Stories Told by Six Postal Items from the Netherlands mailed between 1890 and 1949". which is part of the current Virtual Stamp Show Exhibits.
The texts, the exhibits, they all go hand-in-hand with a recent acquisition of a Netherlands collection that includes several items from the era including these,
Netherlands Cover with Dutch Legion stamps issued on November 1st, 1942.
The blue stamp sheet has 4 stamps and is valued at 12½ + 87½ Cents. The red stamp sheet has 10 stamps and is valued at 7½ + 2½ Cents. The surcharge on both stamps was for the good of the Dutch SS Legion. Both sheets have a Dutch text, mentioning the following: ZEGEL. UITGEGEVEN TEN BATE VAN HET VOORZIENINGSFONDS VAN HET NEDERLANDSCH LEGIOEN 1942.
More to come as I work my way through the pages...
Happy collecting!

I am creating an album for my German Third Reich Collection. Contains all varieties listed in Michel Specialised, all special postmarks used, names of all engravers (if applicable), as well as a historical context. I do 1-2 pages per day. Immensely enjoyable process. A few examples:

I like the approach classicalstamps, "I do 1-2 pages per day. Immensely enjoyable process."
Doing a bit at a time keeps it fresh and fun; I too set small attainable goals either for the day or a week; provides for both motivation and a sense of accomplishment.
Self-rewards acknowledged and personal achievement medals all around...
Happy collecting!

Not much today. I am back to training for the Canada Army Run Commander's Challenge - 5k followed by ½ marathon. Three weeks ago and until yesterday I thought I wouldn't be able to do it. But somehow, miraculously, I am better. Darn, now I HAVE to do it! Today I received this mysterious cover in the mail. What's inside, surely NOT photos!? I had no idea. But it turned out to be this... I am a little surprised by how flimsy it is. I expected it to be made from a firmer plastic. But what the heck. It is here now & looks good!

I haven't been stampin' much. To show the point, here is my stack of mail. There are all envelopes of stamps I have received in the last 2 weeks, that I haven't even opened! Who gets stamps in the mail and doesn't open them?

Yesterday I drove up to Andorra (see my post of the 20th). As I no longer go skiing and hate shopping, the two main reasons for driving the 220 km, I haven't been to the tiny Pyrenean country for 7 years. It's true, you can also go trekking, and the mountains there are nice. But, so are those on the nearby Catalonia and you don't have to cross a big shopping mall, like Andorra la Vella (Catalan, for Old Andorra) the country's capital. So, I arrived about 9.30, park my car (like in most Catalan cities, there's no free parking in Andorra) and went to visit both French & Spanish POs. They're very close and you can walk from one to the other. They had a wide stock of of modern Andorra stamps, which in the case of the Spanish PO surprised (some years ago, they didn't have any). I bought the 2020 Europa stamps, placed on self-addressed letters and posted in the two diferent post-boxes. We'll see when I receive them and which comes the first. I'm not interested on mint stamps and, anyway, I can buy the Spanish PO stamps at Barcelona's GPO philatelic counter. Then, I drove the 9 km up to Ordino, to visit the Andorra Postal Museum. For 5 €, you buy a combined ticket that allows you to visit the Postal Museum and the Casa Areny-Plandolit, an old Andorra House with many interesting artifacts. There's a paying parking lot near the museums. The postal part is small, but it gives you an idea of the history of post in Andorra. Of course, it has nothing to do with the postal museums that I've visited all around Europe; but, it's not too bad for a country the size of Andorra (you, can't expect the Smithsonian!). They even have for sale (1€ ) a 1983 stationery cover issued by the French Andorra PO showing showing the main entrance of the museum, which I bough and placed in a postbox at the same town of Ordino-la Massana to get the appropiate postmark. We'll see what I get and when.
They've have also got for sale a lot of postcards (0.20 €/each) and a book on the birth of French Post Office in Andorra in both French and Catalan versions (for the first page of the later, see my post on page 14 of "What's in your library?")
Ticket valid for different Andorra museums:
On the central lower park there's the symbol of the Postal Museum
And, on the right, you can see the "postmark" that the place on the ticket, to show that you've already visited the museum
After doing a minimum shopping and having lunch, I drove back home.
It was a nice day. Perhaps, I should go there once a year...

This and that so far today. I finally opened the package of stamps & FDC's from Iceland's final year of issuing stamps.
I didn't realize all would be self-adhesives! But at least the different series they put out in one day each have their own cancel. Nothing special like I thought they'd be. They have more apparently coming out in October, but I think I'll pass on them, considering this series.

I did more scanning of album page plus I took chipboard (like the backing of a pad of paper), cut it in half, then 3 hole punch to be page supporters. I use Vario G binders and when open and laying flat the page can curl to follow the curved spine. Now it is supported! I raided my 3 boxes of cardboard to get the right size. I save the better stiffeners from incoming stamp mailings (like those from USPS center that usually comes with every stamp item) in the hopes I will need them some day for mailing stamps.

My Mom mailed me one of these with the plate number on it, a while back. Well, I needed one in my used album, so I tore the edges off, so it would fit nicely. LOL. I guess Mom does always knows best.

Immensely enjoyable process. Wow. Amazing pages. How much space does this take up? I mean, If there is only one stamp, plus variations, per page, that would take up a lot of album space. The pages do look great, and it would make an interesting album, even for someone who doesn't collect stamps. That kind of album would get other people interested in collecting stamps maybe. Where do you find all the special postmarks, for each stamp? Or even, every regular postmark? I could surely use that information, I am trying to get one of every postmark from Germany (1872 - 1945 only). I do have a book on all Post Offices from 1941, I think, that supposedly lists all the post offices open that year, but it doesn't list the special postmarks.
Have a great day.
Mike.

A total of 40 days, but it was lost in Illinois for for about 2 weeks. Apparently Illinois is like a postal black hole or something. LOL.

Thanks for your kind words. I'm not done yet, but I guess Germany's regular Reichpost issues will fill up a couple of Lighthouse Binders. For other areas where I don't have as much relevant information, I will put more than one stamp/series per page. All the special postmarks are shown in this book:

I recently had one go from North Carolina to South Carolina to a Chicago Distribution Center, then Melrose Park (outside of Chicago), then back to the Chicago Distribution Center, before finally getting to the local post office. Chicago in general is, and has been, one of the worst systems in the country.

spent a large part of this afternoon working on a page for Württenberg half sheet pages. As there is a slight disconnect between Scribus and my printer I had to "fool" the printer by changing the page in Scribus to be 11.5 x 8.5 (landscape), and after about 30 -40 printings, i am very close (so close I cut the shogward to size)
now comes the daunting task of trying to get the mount affixed (and lined up) as these large size mounts are $$$
so, maybe tomorrow I'll be brave enough to try after a good nights sleep and fresh eyes
and on the fire front 35% contained, smoke not to bad today, and hot weather returning.....
and now back to your regularly programmed evening!

I had busy days at work this past week, but managed to find some time each evening to do a bit of stamping, which was great. - Organized my classic Denmark accumulation into stock pages and entered Morten's (classicalstamps ) giveaway
- Purchased a couple of Cape of Good Hope triangles to add to my growing collection
- Finished up another 50/50 Auction (thanks, tobben63 !), and need to prep new lots to post
- Packaged up Tobben's lot and Kate's (katie333 ) trade lot and took everything to the Post Office today
- Finishing up putting together a small lot of material for daniel in appreciation of his gift of the COGH triangle Cinderella souvenir sheet
So, no shortage of stamp-related activities. I also received Alex's ( vikingeck ) big WW mixed lot today, and I will probably dig into that before the weekend is over. There are also several posts I want to make on the boards, so hopefully will find time to do that, too. We have a long holiday weekend here in the UK, and it is a welcome relief for me from the hectic pace at work these days. Stay stampy, all!

I was going to get on with my USA album pages, but have been way-laid by Apple's M$A's (music files) that I had been trying to covert to MP3's again.
I finally found a simple script to batch convert the lot. So now to get on with it! I'll get back to stamps sometime!

spent almost the entire day stamping!- Finished a page for Württenberg, put away a number of straggles, almost emptied an old stock book (what is left is heading for the trading block), and stripped a 1930's - 1958 hingeless album of France... what a pain, I would not own one, the pages only had a year range... and now I have a large pile of mostly mint France stamps (many of which are dupes... but until I get in one place, how does one know these things?) Discovered Maluku Selatan stamps (I had to look it up!) already posted in a thread so I saw no reason to duplicate.... more trade material... A good day with lots of progress, although one might be hard pressed to notice! my wife may not agree, but at least I was quiet!!!

Hi TSF Stampers!
After a bit of a rough week health wise, I'm back at my stamp desk mostly trying to get caught up on trades. But last night I decided to just work on my collections and began organizing my Austrian Bosnia & Herzegovina issues.
After combining two auction lots with my existing collection, I was delighted to see that I'm only missing a few issues - mostly varieties of the very first issue and all of the entire last issue. The final issue was never released for postal use and is only to be found in unused condition. The first issue is a gold mine of perf and type varieties and is fun to collect and study. I'll definitely be on the hunt for more of those, hopefully on cover if possible! There are also imperf versions of some issues and one auction lot contained a complete canceled imperf set which was a thrill to find! Reprints exist for a few issues which are MUCH cheaper than the originals - another challenge to the collector of B & H.
Those few hours with my Austrian Bosnia & Herzegovina were really enjoyable philatelic FUN! When I get a bit of time, I'll try to post some pics on the Balkans thread here in the forum.
Happy stamping everyone!
