What I collect: Places I've been, and places I want to go.

Having been working on my USA collection, and processed my backlog of "proper" stamps, I've turned my attention to postal stationary. I ordered a package of archival photo corners and have been creating pages for a small pile of postal cards I acquired some time ago. Its fun because while there were relatively few envelopes and postcards printed with postage, the topics are widely varied and the vignettes often a bit larger than a postage stamp can afford.

After buying the same stamps at two separate shows, I buckled down and built proper want lists this week. Sweden thru 1951 is done as is Canada. Now I can buy with more confidence. Or in the case of Canada, go through the stockbook that is my "inbox". That's tomorrow's project. 🙂 I was surprised how many Canadian stamps I'm missing, even of cheaper stamps. I've been ignoring my native land, I guess. That's why I keep my lists updated so carefully, I've bought the same stamps multiple times, sometimes expensive ones. I even update at shows because I have bought the exact same stamp at the exact same show before. Never again.

Sunday evening seems to be a common day for many on-line auctions to end, but alas, I was unsuccessful with any of my bids for material that I was interested in, including this one,
eBay item number - 355808907521, selling price - GBP 170.00
All of the Falkland Islands items I bid on went beyond my bid limits and I am still trying to figure out what made this block so special...
Have fun and happy collecting!

May be it is the long ‘A’ on FALKL AND on the stamp above the Thomas de La Rue imprint ?

They were initially printed by Waterlow so perhaps the De La Rue prints are more valuable? Heijtz (2103) catlalogues these at £15.
There's a nice ½d block of 10 with a Waterlow imprint here:

That is a nice block on the Zeboose site michael , but it also contains the frame and vignette plate numbers which are missing from the 6d Black-browed Albatross block. Perhaps Alex (vikingeck), with those good eyes of his, is correct and the extended 'A' is enough to warrant a 88% premium over full catalogue value, hmmmm? At the end of the day though, it takes two to make an auction and I was not one of them...
Have fun and happy collecting!

My Monday morning surprise. Grabbed my coffee, went to my desk and noticed a stamp on the floor (hmmm ?). Imagine my delight. a SON France 5F Sage, maybe not in the grandest of shape, but a jewel no less, and it appears to be a color variety I need!! So a bath and then onto the page! usually mondays are rather quiet!

I've been pulling US plate blocks out of crystal mounts, Showgards and other similar mounts (I really like the crystal mounts!...[sarcasm off] the past week or so. I don't know how many I've pulled so far. A thousand? Maybe more? Then I've been putting them in 104 dealer cards. I have no idea how many more to go yet...I have a Scott Plate Block album that I am working on now that is 2" thick that is full of plates and I just started. I have two more albums sitting on a shelf that I know of for sure to go through yet. Oh....there will be more.... Mike

I'm sliding back into modern Canadian definitive stamps. It helps to have a good catalogue and the Unitrade catalogue does a great job of grouping and explaining the definitive issues. Although they were workhorse stamps, annual rate increases meant that new definitives were issued nearly every year from 1997 - 2012 or so. And with reduced mail volumes, I bet they will be a bit of a challenge to collect used. But I spent most of the day building a list of them all so I have it handy as I go to club meetings. Those rummage boxes of mix seem more interesting to me now.

BNAPS is coming to town. BNAPEX 2024 is being held in Kingston, Ontario on August 23-25 at St. Lawrence College. If you’re in the area drop in. Check their website for details.
Anyway, they’ve asked members, and local collectors, to submit informal one-pagers on the postal history of Kingston. I gather they plan to display these in the lobby at the event so guests can sample a buffet of local history.
Which brings me to the point. I spent this past weekend doing two pages – one on the 1929 opening of the Kingston Airport and one on the cancellations used by rural post offices (there were five) on Wolfe Island, and its two near shore island satellites, before the introduction of Rural Delivery in 1914.
Here’s the thing, I couldn’t find a copy of one of the five cancellations. I knew I had one, I just couldn’t find it. So, I submitted the pages last night without it. Yesterday was the deadline – did I mention that I tend to do things at the last minute?
Of course, I found it this morning (sigh).
I’m beginning to realize that as much fun as there is in accumulating, sorting, curating, researching and sharing stamps and their stories … it all falls, down, at some point when your collection exceeds your memory. And, I don’t know about you but I’m getting older.
Now if there was only a way to capture a digital copy of everything and use a tagged database to quickly search and then find where everything is (smile). It seems to me that we have at least one member who loves to describe his system for doing this. It’s the same guy who also is able to digitally sort and access his research database. (I wonder who that is – smile).
I think it may be time for me to do that too … if it’s not too late. Boy, there’s a lot of stuff to scan and input.

I have bought stamps everywhere. This morning I received my Austria Scott # 1 yellow, bought on Hipstamp but from APS-store - I was impressed with the mailing. Most sellers would send it in a very small envelope as 1 copy of X stamp but with good protection. However the envelope ws 9" X 6", sent from Bellefonte, PA with an interesting submission form-Country-Description of the stamp, condition, 2020 Cat value, even the seller Item No. An Order Number with details of buyer (me), dates, item description with Order details/price etc.... A return form was included in case a return was requested with expertizing extensions. - I was impressed with APS-store René

Working on getting airmails and other back of book stamps in my album.. Then I will be working on getting this pile of odds and ends put in my albums. I am trying to fill holes, most are common stamps that I just hadn’t acquired yet. After that I want to start getting some of my other collections that are just sitting in envelopes now into stock books. I like I always have something to do with my collections. As stated elsewhere it keeps your mind off the negative things in life. Enjoy your stamps everyone. Carabop

I will get another booster in August prior to an Ireland trip which will be 6 months since my last positive case. My last mild case was in February and my doctor and pharmacist did not encourage me to take Paxlovid unless I was getting severe symptoms. As you know the shots/busters are meant to reduce the level of illness. They do not guarantee you do not get it. One of my sisters and partner are just recovering from their first time getting it. Take care.

It's been a busy season for me at work, so I've had less time than usual for stamping, and even less for keeping up with TSF. I've kept on making FDCs for new issues, though, and I'm looking forward to making cachets soon for the Hank Aaron stamp (an early choice for my favorite of 2024) and the Alex Trebek stamp that was just announced as a surprise from USPS. Its design has proven contentious, but I like its innovative, unexpected quality. Happy to have a moment to check back in on the forum here!

Thanks renden and hdm1950. Since today was day 1 and symptoms not real severe they would not OK Paxlovid for my wife. I have tested negative, but in the event I get it (which I expect I will this time around) I reported myself as positive and got Paxlovid OK'd (I'm older, chronic sinus issues and hypoglycemic so I was an easy A ).... and i made a big pot of beans with smoked pork shank yesterday so we're set, pantry is stocked enough to get us through without having to leave. If they think she should take it, we'll get it OK'd and start he on mine. Protocols.....

I'm just awaiting the arrival of some more Machin stamps for my specialist collection. My local stamp auction is coming up at the end of next week so 6 lots have been earmarked to view some time between Monday & Friday next week. I'm looking at 1 high value lot out of the 6 so I may be skint by the end of this month!! or not.

Day 3, so far so good. All quiet on the Covid front. My wife is somewhat better (her appetite and sense of smell have returned). With every twinge or oddness I'm immediately trying to decide if the onset has begun, but so far my imagination has been at times too suspect...
I have made a great deal of progress laying pages for Memel under French Administration, beginning with the Germania provisionals which France allowed to continue until they could issue their own postage stamps.
I may switch over to France 'proper" as there are a 'few' more pages to be made that do not require a decision on which direction to go regarding how many varieties to include, as well a quite a few postmark and perfin pages.
Right this minute I think I need to go outside and water the garden before it gets too warm (and see what ripened since yesterday!)

It would be nice to meet up with you/others from the forum. We have the house on the market at present. If the weather will be as bad as last time, especially on the return journey I'm afraid its a no this time. Weather here has been cold most of this year & my arthritis is not improving to say the least. Anyway don't want to moan on. Maybe next year. Regards John.

Having finally finished picking through the latest box of material dropped off to me I had to find another project. About 2 years ago I had decided to put my few dozen Canada and Provincial revenue stamps in a small stock book. Little did I expect that collection to grow so fast to around 200 stamps. I resisted the temptation to buy a van Dam album but I realized the stock book I began with was too small. Yesterday I began shifting everything into a a larger one. I could hear the early Queen Victoria sets taking a deep breath once she had some better spacing. I have also given several stamps a 3% peroxide bath to bring them back to their true colour. This works especially well on orange issues. The book I am using now has black pages and I find the stamps look nicer with this format.

So, it's hot and muggy today and my wife and I are just chillin' ... doing stampy things. I'm doing something with Hugarian Newspaper stamps and my wife calls me over and asks me about a stamp she found in a kiloware mix. Would I mind looking it up in a catalogue? A 'minor' interruption, right? So, I do. I don't do much with South American stamps. It's usually all new to me. I am familiar with the Pacific War and the use of occupation stamps by Chile in Bolivia in the early 1880's - but that's about it. It seems straightforward enough. A 1937 revaluation of a Bolivian stamp from 1925 ... from 2 centavos to 5. It has an overpint: Comuni-/caciones/D.S./25-2-37/0.05And that's where my curiosity kicks in. I don't know much about the country. So, I start looking around. Wow! a fascinating political-economic history from Colonial days to independence, the Chaco War with Paraguay between 1932 and 1936, political unrest, generational change, more political unrest, a couple of military coups, new elections ... all just before this stamp was reissued in 1937 with its overprint. I ended up going down yet another rabbit hole this afternoon looking at their monetary policies and their challenges with inflation. An interesting postal history too. For example, apparently British stamps were used between 1865 and 1878 at the port of Cobija and can be identified "by the cancellation C39". So, there went my afternoon. I gave my wife the information she wanted ("the stamp is Sc. 233 or Michel Nr. 254") but I was left with a lot of do-list items of my own. What does the overprint refer to - a government or executive order to change postal rates (I assume)? What is cancellation C39 and what does it look like? How do I find or get those British Stamps used in Bolivia? And, is this just another form of "British Offices in ... "? Yet another reminder of how kiloware can strike out of the blue and sent you off on a new path.
