Next time, I will not printed pages prior to looking at 1) a catalog 2) what I have as "stamps" Realized most of the tabs of my stamps were missing........and I will never have the C$$$$ to buy them Unfortunately, some of the early Israel issues, 1948-1952 can be particularly expensive with tabs. But after that most stamps with tabs are very affordable . I collect both mint and used stopping with the change of currency in 1980, after that, like so many other countries, there are just far too many issues. The three high values from the first series issued in 1948 Scott 7,8 & 9 are particularly expensive listed at US7500 in the Scott 2o13 catalogue for the three mint with tabs. These are stamps I never thought to own either mint or used.
Coincidentally these arrived in today's post. Not tabs, but the next best thing, selvedge with plate numbers. I was fortunate to get them at a very reasonable price from a South African auction.

On the Move TodayGreetings, stampers, far and wide! I hope you are all as happy and well as you can be. I am writing this post as I sit at an airport awaiting the first of my two flights today. By tomorrow, we will be back in Europe. I will post more about my travels in a subject-specific thread. Stamp-wise, I did manage to get a couple of things done in the past week or so: - Gathered up one last packet of stamps for carabop and mailed to her to complete the Newsletter Giveaway. - Received a couple of submissions for the next Newsletter and downloaded those for reading during my travels. - Booked airline flights and hotel room for a trip to the Houston Stamp Show in September with JeffS . I am really looking forward to that. - And last but not least, with important help from michael , I submitted a recent Cape Triangle purchase from eBay to BPA Expertising Ltd. in the UK, in the hopes of ending up with a genuine, certified SG19c Steel Blue shade. We shall see! Stay stampy, all!

Last Sunday, on the Stamp Market, I was able to find another 60 or so, Sweden used stamps from the 1990s-early 2000s years, for the usual price, from that older collector of the other Sunday. He has promised to bring some more Scandinavian (Denmark, Finland, Norway...) duplicates. Let's see... At present, I'm placing the stamps on the album, that it's becoming to look quite nice. Next week, there will be the Artesa de Segre yearly meeting, where I look foward to find some cinderellas. Prior to that I'll have to drive 180 km West to Almacelles, to meet a friend, with whom we're working on a catalog of Catalan cinderellas. He needs to scan some items that I've found on last year. He only trusts on his scanner for the catalog images... Later. we'll joint the Artesa gathering, 50 km East. I'll tell you about on Monday.

From this day in history... a classic Gustaf V looking left (looking heroic!) on a F184 from 1936, one of the very last of the Gustaf V left series.
It was a typical odd value from an era when stamps often had very particular--often eccentrically unique--uses. A website says this one was for 'Registered printed matter'. Uh, okay. Maybe this stamp is proof that category really did exist. Or maybe it just shows a clerk knew how to make change.

Quiet morning ... I've given myself three jobs: 1 - Learn how to use my new scanner. So far, I'm not impressed. Of course, that's probably not the scanner ... as a test I'm using this stamp. I'm not sure it can ever be scanned to show, at the same time, ALL of the security features - especially the silver stars. I think it requires a camera with particular attention to the lighting. 2 - I'm going to the BNAPS conference on Friday. I still don't have all my want lists up-to-date ... so that's my second job. I've vowed to make this the last time I buy the same stamp twice (ha-ha). 3 - I picked up a small assortment of Cuban stamps a couple of days ago. I need to figure out what I got. My reward for doing these things (I still need motivating carrots at my age) ... is to hop on the ferry to Cape Vincent (on the US facing side of the island) and join some friends for the monthly Wolfe Island Men's Book Club meeting. Don't get the wrong idea ... we mainly read the menus (smile).

Haven't done much stamping lately but got the latest sales flyer from Bob Friedman and saw something I had to get.. The Kelantan 1937-1940 "Chef's Hat" Definitves This is a Holy Grail set for me, my father had it (bought it in the 1960s when Malaya was cheap as chips) and then sold it for $$$ when he started downsizing in the early 2000s, and I have always wanted to have the set in my collection And at less than 60% CV for what is a very rare set, I could not resist. Will have the stamps in a couple days, fingers crossed they are as good as they described when I called (I can return no questions asked if needed)

Spent most of the afternoon on Philatelic Society business. At the April AGM we were made aware that new members in the past 5-6 years had not been given our Constitution on joining, many other members had mislaid their copy or even denied ever receiving one. I was delegated to print off sufficient copies for all members with some spares for the secretary to have for future joiners. The season starts in 3 weeks on 12 Sept ( gee where has the summer gone ? ) so my printer was working overtime on the 8 page + cover , then guillotine, fold and staple together 50 pocket size booklets

What kind of scanner do you have? If you have an Epson V600, it has two lamps. One lamp is perpendicular lighting and another more oblique. You can select which one is used. This may help. However, I have found you often need lighting a shallow angles to pick up some stamp features/

However, I have found you often need lighting a shallow angles to pick up some stamp features/ Sadly ... it's an Epson Perfection V19 II ... it's not bad for what it is (a standard flatbed scanner). It does go up to 9,600dpi which makes it better than my old scanner (an HP - which is / was a real workhouse but only scanned up to 1,200). I got the Epson refurbished for a great price. Anyway, I agree with you. I need to spend a bit more money and get a scanner that has two lamps. The V600 it is. Thanks.

New album: Israel, as told previously - no tabs as all stamps were there. Have not invested any $ yet for this Country - Beautiful FDCs with full stamps (with tabs) received years ago from Londonbus1. Wonder if it is OK to collect the stamps without the tabs (big difference in CV). Meanwhile, hope what I am collecting (no tabs except on the FDCs) is worth the time invested René

The Kelantan Chefs Hat (Scott 29-43) set arrived today, and I could not be happier All are very light hinged except for the $2 which has a bit of a hinge remnant on it. But the colors are really fresh and just overall a beautiful set.

soaking, soaking.... and soaking . I have a large number of 1900 -1945 Austria that I acquired on pages- hand written, some typed, and a few commercially printed. A lot of stamps and nothing extraordinary, but, they need to get 'cleaned up' and put away. There are some interesting cancellations. Most are used, but I have a large pile of mint hinged that will keep the Stampliftbox busy. There are also some large blocks (4, 6 and 8) that may not fit well into the Stampliftbox, so it may be time for a DIY project to make something that will handle larger areas (or more stamps). Stampliftbox is a box with a lower compartment that has a sponge in it, separated by a perforated 'deck" and a tight fitting lit with a semi-sponge in it to hold the stamps flat against the perforated deck.
If I get so-motivated I'll share!!

Hugh I did scans with each lamp and both and saw no difference in scans. Like your scan, the silver stars (the X's) are appear blackish. You have to be offset 30 to 40 degrees before they reflect as silver.

It has taken Delcampe 3 weeks to respond after I messaged that I was locked out of my account, with pass word not recognised and too many attempts to reset. Finally at the end of this week they got back direct and reset my password (actually the same as it always was ) I had won an item in France on 29 July was only now able to connect and pay, nearly 4 weeks late! The Seller had politely waited and no doubt wondered, and has now acknowledged my apology and the item is in the mail. I know in similar reversed circumstances I get edgy if my buyer doesn't pay within a week and cross if it is two weeks, (but then Patience is not one of my virtues!) Incidentally djcmh that is indeed a handsome KELANTAN set congratulations

My wife tested positive for covid this morning, so I presume that is also what I came down with overnight. So, spent the day with my camera collection (I'm taking a course on how to repair old film cameras), and working on my New Zealand stamps - as I've done with several other countries recently, I'm printing duplicate pages so as to be able to mount both mint and used examples.
