Lately, I have acquired quite a few Japanese sets related to animation and manga. Let me start sharing them by 2 issues about the anime Demon Slayers (not the manga) produced by ufotable. [Japan, national issue, 2021.] [Japan, personalised issue, 2020.]

The mecha anime TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion (commonly called 'EVA' for short) directed by Hideaki Anno has become quickly one of the instant classics of Japanese animation since it was premiered in 1995. Years later, the new film tetralogy 'Rebuild of Evangelion' (known in Japan as ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版) still attracts countless admirers even though nobody pretends to understand the ending (LOL). [As part of the series 'Animation Hero and Heroine Series no.5: Evangelion'; 2007.] [This personalised issue 'Hakone as Tokyo III' (2015) commemorates the new film series with new character.]

2 sheets (each 10 stamps) issued in Japan in 2011 that commemorates the Japan International Stamp Exhibition 2011 held in Yokohama: The theme in these issues is Japanese animation. Japan Post chose 5 epoch-making works in the history of Japanese animation that were immensely popular all over the world. From left to right in both sheets: (1) Astro Boy (2) Doraemon (3) Pokemon (4) Hello Kitty (5) Choju-jinbutsu giga (鳥獣人物戯画) combined with Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit (山下白雨) by Hokusai: Choju-jinbutsu-giga created in the 12-13th century is credited as the oldest work of manga.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the serialisation of the manga character Doraemon in magazine, Japan Post issued 2 sets of stamps of in 2 different facial values in 2020(*). The first (84 yen) shows Doraemon and Nobita's early design by Fujiko Fujio: The second (63 yen) shows Doraemon travelling around Japan as drawn by Fujio's pupil Shintaro Mugiwara, who is the artist continuing to draw the series after Fujio's passing: The back side of this stamp sheet is the pink-colored 'Anywhere Door'.
(*) According to web search, Doraemon made its first appearance in magazine on 15 December 1969, but for reason unknown to me, Japan Post counts 1970 as the the starting year of its serialisation. Hence these stamps were issued in 2020, instead of 2019.

Doraemon again (I know, there are so many Doraemon stamps issued in Japan -- but is this surprising?) as part of the 'Science and Technology and Animation' Series, vol. 6 issued in 2004:

ameis33 -- Apparently, there is a personalised issue, but no official issue for Kenshiro in 2018 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the series: www.yushu.co.jp/shop/g/g606255/Sailor Moon is still very popular thanks to the remake. I just went to the Sailor Moon exhibition in Tokyo. Her husband's exhibition in Tokyo was super popular as well. But most of visitors went for Hunter x Hunter instead of Yu Yu Hakusho that I grew up with.

This Belgian Tintin miniature sheet, shown elsewhere on the forum, is particularly interesting since it depicts two scenes from the film "Tintin and the Blue Oranges" which was not based on one of Hergé's books.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Compared with all the forerunners I have presented so far, Rilakkuma was first seen in 2003 in San-X's four-panel comic series titled Rilakkuma Seikatsu, making it an impressively young character of the Japanese kawaii culture. But this character has already made its appearance on Japan Post's regular stamp program of 2017:

Who DOESN't know Super Mario? Unlike the previous cartoon / comic character issues in Japan that consisted of 2 sheets of stamps of different facial values, this 2017 Super Mario issue only came in one sheet of 82 yen stamps.

These Japanese Snoopy sets that were issued at the same time (2017) are unusual too -- they are both of 82 yen, instead of one of 62 yen for domestic use.

These Japanese Snoopy sets that were issued at the same time (2017) are unusual too -- they are both of 82 yen, instead of one of 62 yen for domestic use. Just a small note: At that time, the domestic postcard rate was ¥62, and the domestic letter rate (up to 25g, about 0.88oz) was ¥82. (It's currently ¥63 and ¥84.) Japan occasionally issues higher-value stamps for international postcards and letters, but that overwhelming and intimidating number of stamps issues every year (what, 700-800+?!) are intended for domestic use. (And apparently there is an appetite there for that many stamps.) Thanks for all your great posts, Linda !

Philatarium -- Ah, that's right, postcard rate is universally 70 yen for the entire world. I keep thinking in terms of Canadian postage which treats a postcard the same as an envelope. So I thought one lower value was for domestic use, another for international use.

The manga artist Hajime Isayama's debut work Attack on Titan (2009-2021) had been a major hit in the industry before the first episode of the animated adaptation came out in 2013. The incredibly high quality -- both visually and musically -- of the animated TV series produced by WIT Studio has helped to attracted countless followers for the series. Although relatively speaking to other manga artists, Isayama's drawing skill that has constantly been improving is still poor, his story-telling skill certainly complements this shortcoming. Insofar as I know, there had been no regular stamp issued for this series in Japan, but I found two sets of (personalised) 'frame stamps' on the market. The first was exclusively sold at Universal Studio Japan in Osaka (I haven't found the year of issue yet). It features 10 stamps of 5 designs -- 4 of them showing the tokens for different groups of militaries, namely, Military Police Brigade, Garrison Regiment, Survey Corps, and Training Corps. The second was exclusively sold at the author's hometown, Oyama (Oita prefecture), to commemorate the release of the 15th volume of the series in 2014. The set includes 3 postcards and 10 stamps of 2 designs. There are a couple more sets related to Attack on Titan, which I am still waiting to acquire.
