The Malaya BMA issues are one of the most interesting and complex issues from British Malaya. In order to sort it by a more specialized catalog, you have to determine four criteria: the print dies, the surface colors, the overprint colors, and the paper type.
If you collect this issue, I have prepared a website showing scans of all of the stamps by the Commonwealth Catalogue (as well as Scott and Stanley Gibbons). There are also blown up images showing how to sort the dies and the various overprint colors that were used on the 1c and 50c stamps. For what it is worth, there are even more printings than found in the Commonwealth Catalogue. So if you notice some shades that seem different it is possible they are from other printings that were not significant enough to merit catalog status. It is a really interesting set.
