Wow jl, congrats on noticing the horizontal space when a vertical stamp ( the 1907 Scott 15 40c dull green & brown "Bakalois Woman") is requested by BB! When I did the checklist for the Middle Congo, I suggested Scott 15 for the space, but didn't pick up on the fact that the space is horizontal! I have now amended the blog post to state: Alert: BB space error: Scott 15 is 40c dull green & brown "Bakalois Woman", a vertical stamp. And BB presents a horizontal space for it! This BB space error has persisted at least since the 1940s editions. The practical solution is to put the vertical stamp-Scott 15- in the horizontal space. It will have to be fudged a bit to fit, and put partially in the margins - especially for the '69 editions and later editions where, because of the redesign of spaces, there is less space for it.bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2014/01/TheClassicStampsoftheMiddleCongo.html
You could also substitute the 1907 Scott 9 20c brown & blue "Leopard", a horizontal stamp, in the space. But I think the 40c vertical stamp is what BB asks for, even if the space shape is wrong. Really, your choice.

Thanks for creating this thread, JL, and for your informative responses, Big Blue and Falschung.
When I find problems like this with Scott Int'l albums, I often go back to older editions for comparison. From my 1928 edition of the Scott Int'l Jr. album, the space corresponding to the one in JL's photo is marked (correctly) for the 20c brown and blue stamp, not the 40c dull green and brown, as it was (incorrectly) in later editions. So, it seems that this space was originally intended for the 20c, but somehow it was mistakenly changed, as Big Blue had already realized and pointed out.
Also, in my 1929 edition of the brown-cover Scott Int'l album, the space for the 40c dull green and brown has the correct, vertical orientation.

Yes, the Scott 9 20c brown & blue would appear to be the original intent. Nice detective work, Beryllium Guy!

Thanks, Big Blue! I had fun taking a look to see what I could figure out.
Finding anomalies like this one is the reason why I keep copies of older editions of both albums and catalogues (there was a time when I didn't). It gives me the resources to look back and see how things changed over certain periods of time, and can help me to figure out if a particular mistake was always there or was of more recent vintage.
