If you define the bottom line strictly in dollar terms (and most businesses do, unfortunately), then maybe this move is in fact better for Photobucket. One person paying $400 is more money than 10,000,000 people paying $0 each. I think in the long term they'll lose a lot of traffic and their attractiveness as an advertising target will decrease accordingly. Whether they gain enough paying customers to offset the loss of advertising value is something I'm sure they've tried real hard to figure out in advance. Maybe they've made a multi-million dollar mistake, but I doubt it. They've decided that free = freeloader mooches and they're gambling that they'll be better off without them. Away with the great unwashed! ha ha

I see that most of Rodney's Photbucket links are now broken. ... I just finished going through about 40 pages of Rod's posts, dating back to November 1, 2015, and only replaced 69 images. The vast majority of his Photobucket images appear to be intact so I'm wondering if he broke down and paid the ransom or if the blocked images pre-date November 2015.

Ryan I can understand how they could make such a decision but the real problem I have with it is the complete absence of forewarning so that people could make alternate arrangements. If I recall correctly, when ImageShack decided to adopt a fee-for-service model they gave their members 30 days notice. How much impact on Photobucket's bottom line would it have been for them to do the same?

The vast majority of his Photobucket images appear to be intact so I'm wondering if he broke down and paid the ransom or if the blocked images pre-date November 2015. I'm wondering if there is a random element in play here. Immediately after the Photobucket issue cropped up, I could still see all of Rod's images, but almost all of the images for tomiseksj and I.L.S. gave me the ransom note image. A few days ago, images from rod222 went blank but I never saw a ransom note, just the little square with a red X inside it like you get with a 404 / File Not Found error (although right-clicking on that X and opening the image in a new tab would give me the image, so the file was still in fact there). At the same time, images from vasia and zipper disappeared for me and were replaced by ransom notes. Today, Photobucket images are back for Rodney, still gone for Vasia but Steve has manually replaced some of them to the new image host, Zipper has replaced a bunch of images on her own, and a page I had opened before setting the computer to sleep overnight which had images functioning for alanl now has the ransom note today after my computer woke up again. I wonder if the images hosted on Photobucket will continue to oscillate back and forth between various states of access for some people. Ryan

Yes, some companies seem perfectly willing to shoot themselves in the foot over stuff that seems real obvious in hindsight. How many United Airlines officials today would recommend breaking their customers' noses and dragging them off the plane to make seats available for their own staff instead? Probably not many, it costs a lot of money to handle seating arrangements on a plane that way and you won't get good customer service reviews for it either. Didn't stop them from trying it out once, though! Ryan

I just think the CEO was looking for some quick money (think Epipen) Look at the math, if they get even 10% takers they will have a lot more money than they had before.

I just think the CEO was looking for some quick money (think Epipen) Look at the math, if they get even 10% takers they will have a lot more money than they had before. 10% would be a very optimistic call. Consider just the eBay and similar site sellers who use PB for hosting their item images. Such charges would render their selling position impossible. Surely only large business users who trade in high value/high volume goods, or perhaps advertising agencies could afford these subscriptions. It will be interesting to see what transpires in the coming months. What this situation has done is to send a wake up call to everyone using 'free' hosting sites. I'm sure that many users will now be very nervous about relying on such services, particularly if the likes of IMGUR adopt a similar charging model. It may however present an opportunity for other providers to implement new hosting sites with realistic charges. They could make a killing by hoovering up all the disaffected small time users.

I am assuming the 10% is not voluntary. They have to do since their pics are being held hostage. The following year many will then drop as they move off PB.

It appears that Admin is the latest victim in this ongoing saga...I'll be releasing information regarding our own TSF image host shortly so those of you that have blocked images in need of replacement may wish to delay looking for another image host.

I'll wait a bit then because anything to make the task a bit easier will help. It will not effect TSF too much but Photobucket will not allow me to download any of my images so those uploaded before 2010 are lost forever it seems.
I received an email from PB 2 days ago with the news of the changes (more than 2 weeks after they whacked us) and they stated that I would be able to download any pictures and even gave instructions on how to do it. But my account is blocked. I have written to them but, of course, without reply. I will not hold my breath.
As TSF is post-2010 I have most of the images on the computer, although there may be the odd one or three that is missing. So I will begin as soon as I hear news one way or the other.

When you are trying to determine if any of your posts have been impacted by the PB action, using the forum's search function will make the process much simpler. To isolate all of your posts, do the following:

A tutorial on replacing blocked Photobucket images has been placed on the newly-created TSFImageHost board. You must be logged in to the forum in order to access that information only board.

I have just replaced 5 images on the Cinderella Blackprint thread (Page 2). It took a little while but it will be much easier next time when I have worked out the system. It was actually quite easy.
I did not go the route suggested by tomisekj, but instead took the pictures from my computer direct, I found it easier. Deleting the old PB links proved a bit difficult at first but it will be easier next time.
Bit time-consuming but it was never going to be that quick. I'll get there in the end !!

Deleting the old PB links proved a bit difficult at first but it will be easier next time... The approach that I suggested works best if one isn't able to find (or no longer has) the images on their computer, or if replacing images of members who are no longer with us. The simplest way I've found to delete the old PB links is to select Preview mode, place the cursor to the right of the blocked image, and press backspace. Trying to delete it in BBCode mode can get confusing and you risk deleting some of the code for the image that you just inserted.

Well, I am sad to report that PB has finally gotten around to blocking my account, too. I had been checking every couple of days on TSF to see if images from older posts (pre-PostImage days) were still there, and they have been until today. So, when I get home, which will be later today, I will begin the project of fixing my images, too. Steve ( tomiseksj), is there still a reason to leave my PB account in place? I have all of the images on my computer as well, so I won't be losing anything by closing the account, but I noted that you had stated previously that it would be better if we did not close our accounts.

Personally, I shall leave my account in place. It may be a futile gesture, but I don't intend being so accommodating, and will let them do the final elimination of non-paying users' images and accounts.
Plus there is the very, very remote possibility they could moderate their subscription demands. So one might shoot oneself in the foot by closing the account.

I will leave my PB account in place then, and get to work on replacing the blocked images. I am glad now that I stopped using PB a while ago (thanks to @falshung!) so there won't be as much to do as there could have been. I will also upgrade some of the images to higher quality ones, too, I think, as I learned more about scanning as my time on TSF has progressed. Some of my early photo posts were not all that good.

I have all of the images on my computer as well, so I won't be losing anything by closing the account, but I noted that you had stated previously that it would be better if we did not close our accounts. I had about 1700 images linked to Photobucket and, while I did have most of them saved somewhere on my computer, it would have taken me ages to find and then replace them all. By keeping my account active I was able to replace them using the URL method in under a week's time...keeping the account active to allow this process was the primary reason for my recommendation. Early on, I also thought that there was a possibility that they might lower their ransom demand to a more reasonable amount; the odds of that happening are significantly less as they seem to have dug in their heels.

For the better part of the past week, it seems the only forum activity I've been involved in has been replacing the blocked images in deceased member I.L.S.'s posts.
As I neared completion, I saw that Jeff had made the below assertion at the beginning of a post on August 4, 2013:
His comment was pertinent at that time because we were debating whether or not to continue hosting images on Proboards' servers and, if so, how could we afford to pay for that service. One of the main points of contention was the durability of the images in forum posts but cost ultimately drove us to 3rd party image hosts.
Today, 1,384 of Jeff's Photobucket images now reside in my TSF Image Host account and another 150 to 200 are in my Postimage account.
While there is no guarantee that at some future time the TSF Image Host won't become cost-prohibitive, we're good for the next three years.

I just checked my recent giveaway post and my images are no longer available. My PB account shows I've used 1% of my account. Seriously, the only images I have in there are on this site so less than 30 images. That's ridiculous - 30 SMALL pictures and they locked it!

A I can do on PB now is view my images. All other buttons and clicks are dead.
I have been uploading to the TSF Image Host for some hours and it is heavy going with lots of guessing and backtracking. But slowly they are coming along. When I have some years ready I will start to replace the images on the forum. Time is a key factor here and it will be a long process.
Hopefully it will get quicker as I get used to it.
There will be some images I can never replace because I have 'lost' about 1500 at PB. But not all are on the forum here. I will cross that bridge when I come to it.
In the meantime.......plodding on !

Londonbus1, I just used the process I described here and was able to easily replace your image in this post.
I had to use that process because when I pasted the URL into PB the "100%" image appeared. Had the actual image appeared in Photobucket, then I would have right-clicked on the image, selected "save image as" to save the image to my desktop, and then used the Drag & Drop upload function to save the image in my TSFImageHost account. I think it will involve less work to replace images one post at a time than to try to upload all of your PB images to TSFImageHost and then try to match images to posts. If you have questions, let's take the discussion offline.

Hi Just to document how I updated my TSF threads. Maybe it will help someone. I updated my posts by using WORD. 1. From TSF, I copied the post, or thread, BB code to a WORD document. 2. Since I had all the images needed on my disk, I copied them to the new TSF image site and copied the BB Full URL's for the images. 3. In the BB document, I pasted the URL's and converted them to a WORD table. 4. Since the new images seem to be in random order, I clicked each URL to insure which image I was working with. 5. The BB code URL, from PhotoBucket has the image name embedded. Each of the URL's was assigned a number (could also use the file name). 6. I then inserted the number or name into a new column 1 of new image site URL table. 7. I then sorted the image table on the image number or name. 8. I the inserted the new URL below the PB URL. 9. When completed one just copies the new BB code and pastes into the post or thread. Note: It is recommended to test the new code in the Test forum, just in case. It sounds like a lot of work but I created a WORD toolbar which did almost 90% of the work. Note: Toolbar can only be used if WORD version contains VBA. Jerry B

Thank you Steve for the TSFImageHost! I can't imagine what you guys are going through with the PB issue when you have hundreds or more images in there.
They wouldn't even let me download mine at all and I only have a couple of handfuls! I haven't even really used the 1% of my account that they say I've used.

YES !!!!!!
I couldn't do anything at PB but I have just returned to see what gives and I find that while all other 'clicks' are closed, I can right click on the images ! So I will go through those that are pre-2010 and save them too. Hopefully now I can replace all my images in time.

I'm a fan of using imgur.com for my images. The only issue with using imgur is that Stampcommunity has blocked imgur.com, because Bobby considers some of the images on there inapprpriate. There is always a gamble when you use someone else to host your images.
