For a 3rd party image hosting service, I've been using Postimage to show in forums etc that don't have a built-in image service like here. It is free with no paid part AFAIK.

The risk incurred in using "free" image hosts is that, as we learned with Photobucket, they can change their terms of use (and costs) overnight.
The TSF image host was procured to protect against such risks.

Not only that, Admin , but they can just up & disappear! Whereas the in house solution will always be here, as long as the web site is here.

I understand that everyone is frustrated, but when did it become normal for a company to operate on free services? Hosting images on any server has costs. Data center space can be expensive, particularly if you include the costs of high speed data connections, security, the servers and people to man them. A modest cost for this service is really not unreasonable. As an alternative, you can always pay a hosting service like Go Daddy, or some others for a domain which includes storage space on their servers. I use a company named DiscountASP to host my website. They charge $125 per year which includes my domain name and about 1GB of disk space which holds a lot of images. There are cheaper options, so if you shop around you can do a lot better on the price. Paying for hosting will allow you to be sure your images will be available on the web. Unfortunately if you stop paying, they will all go away. So using a more public site does have it's advantages.

Of course, the key word is "free". For example, you can say Facebook hosts images for free but you will be exposed to ads (directly or indirectly) due to information posted and what you view.
In the case of Photobucket, how did they expect to make money long term? I used smugmug for image hosting for a while (only $50 per year) but ended that when more forums started internal hosting. Yes, this means some early images I posted on some forums are gone from the forums (most not stamp related).
