I'm surprised that there isn't a thread dealing with Mauritania on here. I mounted these stamps some time ago, using a thin, cream-coloured paper. I need to re-mount these as well. Using darker card stock highlights the entire stamp, not just the design. At least I hid the grid, which I only ½-hid on my Papua airmails! I love these stamps. This is all I have - for now. More to come eventually. The first 16 stamps are a bit pricey, but I'll get them eventually!

Just checking APS StampStore, they list 17 stamps. That's where stampworld.com fails. They have neglected to list the 75¢ Palm Tree of 1905-1906 (?). They have a number of errors like that. Also, their prices seem out of whack for some items. I have a block of 10 of what I thought was a common Argentinian stamp, but stampworld has a list price of $17 each! I thought I had a good deal in that, but on checking postbeeld.com, they listed the single stamp at 50¢, or something like that. What a let down! I view stampworld suspiciously, especially with the prices. It is crowd-sourced, which is good in some ways, but no so in others.

I'm surprised that there isn't a thread dealing with Mauritania on here.... There are almost 100 stamp issuing entities that still don't have boards on the Forum. As members post material in the "Region/Other" boards, those boards get created. I'll create the Mauritania board shortly and relocate this thread.

A few from the archives I parted with a long time ago. Sc 7, 9 & 13 Simple but elegant design
[Moderator edit - images have been removed by user and are irretrievable]
Brightonpete - Re Stampworld I contributed many images, tried to clean up the errors & sold on Stampworld in its early days. At one time I had some 15M+ posted and sold out.
Overall an excellent site and online catalog - maybe one of the best for new or WW collectors. However, a few very large dealers have run of the site now and their prices fall into the category of "IMAGINATIVE"

Especially SG - a booklet, which can still be bought (at face!) at the Greenland PO has a CV of ₤120!

It's OK, Chris. I won't complain about anything! I'd like to see that as well. I do have a small, but varied collection from here & there...

Peter, your description of your own collection reminds me so much of my own.... I was never able to successfully specialize in one country or region, so I stayed with worldwide, and just limited the time period to pre-1930 to save me from myself in attempting to keep up with all of the later proliferation of modern issues.

Merchants crossing the desert series.Yvert 17-61. This series was first introduced in 1913 and ran until 1938,with various colour changes, new values and surcharges.Mint stamps seem to be easier to find.I have a Gibbons catalogue and prices quoted for used stamps are double and sometimes triple the price of a minnt stamp.Dallay doesn,t seem to have these differences.

renden YV 1-16 are out of my price range ,too.According to my Gibbons, a mint set is 425.00ukl and a used set 5550ukl...or is that a printing error ? Have no idea pf price in Yvert or Scott. Stamps from the same period from Senegal,Mauritania,Ivory Coast,French Sudan,Dahomey and French Guinea were all designed by the same person,Jean de la Neziere.

Maury is wrong as to the name: J stands for Joseph.
He also drew stamps for the long sets of French Morocco, Syria, Lebanon, and French Oceania, and a couple of the omnibus issues for the French empire.

Scott values the set mint at $436, and as for used, it is $377. Most of the set is between 70 cents and $10. Only two of the palms and the three highest values showing the explorer and administrator Noel Ballay are more expensive. The 5 franc is $150, and has been forged.

Here is a cover from Mauritania. It is postmarked Port Etienne, 25 Feb. 1939 and sent to Zurich. Port Etienne is now Nouadhibou, the 2nd largest city in the country. It is near the former Spanish colony of La Güera.

Here's a copy from the Gibbons catalogue. No idea of how they come up with these prices! It has to be a printing error!

The Crossing the desert series was replaced by a new series of stamps featuring a Moorish rider, camel cavalry, nomads and a Mauritanian couple. The first series,YV 73-94 was issued in 1938 ,followed by a second series from 1939-1940,YV105-115. YV112A is missing,as there is some doubts about it ever being issued.I have seen mint copies, usually sold with a certificate.Gibbons lists it but does not include it in the price of the full series of 33 stamps.

My Yvert&Tellier French Colonies catalog 2011 edition gives a CV of 525 Euros for a mint set of the 1-16 issues, and 432 Euros for a used set. The numbers are not out of step with the SG ones.

Another set of quasi twins from Mauritania, this time the Rome 1964 and Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games overprints, already seen on cover here thestampforum.boards.net/post/109792/thread . On this new pair, the overprint is wider, 27 instead of 22 mm. YT #154C-D:

I received this pair of 1971 iron ore train stamps and thought it would make a good link between the 1963 Miferma open pit mine and Port Etienne stamps that I already posted on another thread. Scott: 1963 C20-C21 AP4 Scott: 1971 291-292 A57
