The South West Africa Official Stamps are another area that the catalogs list, but not very well. Even experiences collectors are sometimes left confused by the circular descriptions and the lack of images. You almost have to have two catalogs in front of you to figure them out. One catalog should be turned to the Official listings and the other turned to the original issues with the illustrations.
Collecting SWA Officials is a matter of identifying the base stamp and also figuring out the overprint that was applied. Many of the overprints have variations using smaller or larger fonts. For some stamps it can be a significant difference in value, so it helps to get them right.

I agree. I also have problems with the South African issues. Many also have color varieties that make it more confusing. I don't believe Scott pages make room for various colors for same item. What I do is use Gibbons and Scott in coordination. This helps as Gibbons has better explanatory remarks.

I also have pages dealing with the South Africa se-tenant pairs which were issued in the 1920's thru the 1950's.
