"Ifni, former North African enclave of Spain and now part of the southwestern region of Morocco along the Atlantic coast. An arid semidesert region of mountains and coastal plain, Ifni was first settled in 1476 by Diego García de Herrera, lord of the Canaries, as a fortified Spanish fishing, slaving, and trading locality called Santa Cruz de la Mar Pequeña.
Abandoned in 1524 because of disease and Moorish hostility, it was reclaimed following a Spanish-Moroccan treaty in 1860. Effective Spanish reoccupation of the region, however, did not occur until 1934. The enclave became part of Spanish West Africa in 1946. Spain retained its claim to Ifni following Moroccan independence in 1956 and repelled a series of Moroccan attempts to take the territory in the Infi War (1957–58).
In 1958 Ifni was reorganized as a province under a governor-general. Spain ceded control of Ifni to Morocco in 1969. The predominantly Berber population is engaged in fishing and in the raising of sheep, camels, and goats. Ifni’s beaches attract some tourism. The area also produces oils extracted from the fruit of the argan tree and of the Barbary fig, a species of cactus. Sidi Ifni, the chief city, is a local handicrafts center and small port trading primarily with the Canary Islands." link
Spain began issuing postage stamps for Ifni in 1941, initially overprinting Spanish stamps with "TERRITORIO DE IFNI", then issuing new designs in 1943. Issues followed at the rate of about ten per year with the last on 23 November 1968. Most are commonly available and are more often seen unused or CTO than used.
Stamps of Spain, 1938-48 overprinted in Blue or Carmine (Scott#35-5015)

Today I will show some of the Ifni stamps that I received from cursus. I'm really happy about them because now my holding are getting pretty solid! I wanted to start with the "Pro Barcelona" issue in his honor, but I see he has already posted it, so instead we will get the ball rolling with the UPU 75 th anniversary issue:

March 1952, Airmail. 500 years of the birth of king "Ferdinand the Catholic" (actually, Ferdinand II of Catalonia-Aragon). With his wife Isabel of Castile, expelled the moors from the Iberian peninsula in January 1492. Hardly, "a popular subject" for a mainly islamic territory... But, this was 73 years ago, and stamps were used just by the Spanish colonial staff and military men, who sided 200% with Ferdinad... It's not that easy to see this stamp gone through the mail, as the hexagonal pm (typical of Spanish airmails of the era) denotes. And, a face-value of 5 pesetas was not peanuts by then...
