The United Arab Republic (UAR) was a short-lived political union consisting of Egypt and Syria between 1958 and 1961. The union reflected a sense of Arab nationalism and solidarity (Pan-Arabism). It was largely driven by a desire to overcome dividing borders viewed by many as an artificial creation of European colonial powers.
The United Arab Republic had a centralized government, with Cairo as the capital. Egypt and Syria became provinces, with provincial capitals at Cairo, Egypt, and Damascus, Syria. Gamal Abdel Nasser was nominated President of the Republic . Nasser subsequently appointed all members of the National Assembly, selecting half from Egypt and half from Syria. Denmark was the first nation to recognize the new republic, on February 22. The United States extended recognition on February 25.
The union existed until 1961, when Syria seceded from the union after the 1961 Syrian Coup d'état. Egypt continued to be known officially as the "United Arab Republic" until 1971.
Separate stamps were issued by both countries due to the differences in currencies, but all carrying the country name 'United Arab Republic' or 'UAR' with different designs.
Scott lists UAR stamps under Syria (1958-1961) and under Egypt (1958-1971) . I will create another thread for Syria issues.

Gorgeous !! The Majestic Eagle of Saladin always gives me goosebumps, especially on Egypt Stamps. I sold my complete collection long ago but have been tempted by posts here and elsewhere of late and on that note I was checking prices earlier during a respite from work. I was in shock ! I started my Egypt collection over 25 years ago and the prices have gone through the roof since those days. Wow ! However, still tempted.....and it must be that Eagle ! Londonbus1

I grew up in a house full of Nasser's stories and history . It has been 48 years since he left and Gamal Abdel Nasser is still referred to as the most humble Arab Hero.In his Lifetime Nasser overthrew a monarchy, nationalized the Suez canal and stood up to the Egyptian elites among many other things . He gave Pan-Arabism a meaning by rallying the Arabs under the same umbrella.
He was an Arab nationalist like no other(in My opinion) and under his leadership the UAR came to life.It represented a union between Egypt and Syria, rejecting the idea of Borders between Arab countries labeling it a creation of the European colonial powers.
Nasser passed away on Sept,28 1970 after suffering from a heart attack. Following his death announcement, the Arab world was in state of total shock. His funeral procession through Cairo was attended by at least five million mourners.Almost immediately after the procession began, mourners engulfed Nasser's coffin chanting : "Nasser is God's beloved… Each of us is Nasser".
1971 - Photogravure & Engraved .
Scott # 858-859 , Beautiful colors and design .

This may be another case of revenue stamps that are not listed in standard catalogs (I checked both Scott and Yvert&Tellier), so I defer to the community's knowledge in helping me identifying these, found in the packet I received yesterday: I know these refer to the National Charter of 1962, but I only found one (different) issue with a similar design in the catalog. I went blind poring over the catalog pages looking for those. Maybe a special surcharge for agriculture and industry? I assume these are revenue stamps of some kind? The fact that the packet contains two pairs tells me I should probably look for a watermark variety. Any help would be most welcome. Thanks in advance!

The stamp on the top row (right) is mentioned in Michel below the 10m Postage stamp as being a revenue. I have a note that they are fee or due revenues for a Political organization subscription. The values are the same on the large and small stamps of the others so it may well be correct. More research needed to be sure. Haven't seen the middle row but I understand they are revenues given the lack of any English inscriptions. The bottom row are general revenues. It's a start at any rate !

The fact that the packet contains two pairs tells me I should probably look for a watermark variety. Indeed, one set of the last row of revenues has the Saladin eagle watermark, while the other set has the Arabic UAR watermark. Which puts them at the 1962 mark when the Saladin eagle watermark was introduced.

This stamp was issued in 1969. It shows a United Arab Airlines Ilyushin 18 with route map of the airline. UAA operating dates were from 1960 to 1971. Afterwards, the name of the airline was changed to Egyptair. Attached is a genealogy graph through 1971. Scott: C122 AP22
