Since I have some fresh stockbook room for French Somali Coast, I splurged for these three oldies, YT #11-12 & 28:

Since I have some fresh stockbook room for French Somali Coast, I splurged for these three oldies, YT #11-12 & 28: I see we both had the same inspiration for a French Somali Coast splurge: (YT 18): I've wanted this stamp for quite some time (YT 19): I believe the gun boat depicted to be the "Le Pingouin", a paddle steamer side-wheeler (that explains the sponson cover on the side of the boat). Interestingly enough, "Le Pingouin" was originally a Waverley paddle steamer, a type which survives to this day (that came up in the Lloyd's Register of Shipping 1886 online). Other searches mention a massacre in 1886 and a coastal survey in 1888.

Here is a stamp from Djibouti. According to Maury, the postmark is for telegraphs. The gum on the back is intact, suggesting CTO. Does anyone know anything about Djibouti telegraph marks? A cursory search through the main stamp marketplaces, and in my own collection, shows about 40 % of the postmarks are of this kind. So - was telegraphing a major use of these Djibouti stamps? Or were telegraph cancels used for CTO? And how exactly did telegraph use work? Were they stamped to a form, or were they returned, gum intact, to the person paying for the service?

That is the one thing I miss about collecting WW....the stamps with all the beautiful artwork and colors. All of these Somali Coast stamps have both. Wonderful collections here. Mike
