a slow morning in the "office".... I came across these, maybe nothing special. Bayern stamps 3 & 10 Pf, both cancelled on same date January 12, 1915 (If I'm reading this correctly) in BASTOGNE (Walloon region of Luxemborg according to Wiki) and (BELGIEN), and looks like same time of day, but the two cancellations appear to not be by the same hand stamp based on how much clearer the lettering is on one than the other... or maybe more and less ink? any, caught my eye while sorting  |

The user probably went for the ink on the first strike so it blurred and the second was a clean hit. |

Imperial Penny Postage (Scott n.º 85) w/ SMITHS FALLS, ONT Squared Circle Cancel
Not the rarest of items (RF 7.5) but a lovely cancel and one of less than twenty known to exist on a Map Stamp cover....

I have Dallay catalogues and they are very helpful as they list all postal bureaux for each colony,so I can check on cancellations.No such information in my Gibbons catalogues.Is there a book/catalogue which shows this information for British colonies ?

my first contribution to this postmark thread, so forgive any gaffs. I get the impression that unless you're selective when buying, decent 'socked on the nose' cancellations don't come in profusion, but I can see their appeal - they add interest to any stamp - so here are four items ……………….. Hobart 2d. from 1902 - I've turned the picture through one eighty degrees to help. North Tawton, small town in north west Devon U.K. (probably the back of nowhere in 1893) - and the stamp is in good nick. What I think is an embossed Victorian halfpenny from 1892 for Hull, U.K. - no idea what this might have be cut from - something that was prepaid perhaps - maybe a postcard? lastly a Victoria States (Oz) 1d. posted from Melbourne in 1880. Any corrections appreciated  cheers Paul.     |

Another great post, Paul ( paul1), I really like some of these postmarks and stamps. I especially like the North Tawton example, but the colour on stamp is superb. Wow!  I have other examples of that same QV half-penny vermilion stamp myself, but I don't think any of mine, even the unused ones, have colour as nice as that. That is an amazing copy with such deep, rich colour. Great find! |

paul1 nice postmarks! I believe the half penny (Hull) was for newspapers and I have seen large envelope/wrappers a few times
