Wow, I'm amazed how you manage stamping on your lap - how can you do that? You surely must be much more organised than myself. At home I have a huge desk to play with, but I still struggle to have control of all the stuff...

My wife is actually pretty good at putting up with my stamping, including she will soak stamps for me when I ask her to. Wow! She's a keeper! For me, soaking has to take place far away from her sight and never use any of "her" kitchenware. But I do get the kids to help me in removing the stamps from the paper (although not on valuable stamps, let's be realistic!) and putting them out to dry.

Mike, Do you like the watermark detectors? The Signascopes are worth their weight in gold to me. As you can see, I own both of them. I originally bought the larger one about 8 years ago on Ebay for cheap. less than $100. Just recently, while working on the d&@n German stamps, It got to be tedious using the larger one on almost every stamp I was looking at, so I bought the smaller one on Ebay for $100. The smaller one is faster to use, but on a really faint watermark, it doesn't always show it. So when in doubt, I get the larger one out and really tighten it down to see the watermark. The larger one is better at seeing the watermarks, but the smaller one is faster for most stamps. If you do a lot of stamps with watermarks, they are worth buying. Just look on Ebay every week until you find one cheap. You will see them with European power supplies or US power supplies. Don't worry about the power supplies though, I use batteries all the time. In fact, I have no idea where either power supply is. LOL. Have a great day, Mike.

Mike,
I like gadgets so I would spring for something like this if it was useful. I have seen reviews where it said it was not really any better than watermark fluid. Any comparison?

I bought a universal power supply for mine. That thing looks like an octopus - all these bits hanging off it with different adapter fittings, plus switches for voltage and polarity and I forget what else. I thought I might be able to use it for a number of different devices, but I would need to keep good notes to make sure I can figure out how to set it up for each time I use it. As it is, it's exclusively used for my Signoscope and I've never dared to move any of the switches again .... ha ha Ryan

"I have seen reviews where it said it was not really any better than watermark fluid. Any comparison?" angore - There are lot of different views on them. I've had the larger type for 10 years and love it. As Mike says it does take a few seconds for each stamp, so fluid is quicker. However fluid doesn't always work well, particularly for yellow colored stamps, for some GB commonwealth stamps on colored papers or for the later weak and hard to see wmks from the 70's and 80's on Commonwealth stamps. That's not a problem at all for the Signoscope, so I use it for those stamps where fluid is insufficient.

This is how it normaly looks like!Mine always looks like a mess! And when your thinking of that I try to get stamps in accurate order, it's kind of fun to look at the desk. But today, before starting a new project, I decided to clean my desktop. Now Bayern/Bavaria can enter my desk But I guess it won't take long before everything is back to normal ....

My desk is always cluttered with everything computer, camera & stamp. So when I started sorting through the pile of Machin's Gavin sent me ( feebletodix ,) I moved to the dining room table where there is a bit more room... At least I have room to eat, as I move the sorted piles to glassine. But I need so many more! There are just too many colours and values to this long running series!

tobben63, I like your little plastic open container for the hinges. I usually just have a pile of them on my desk, but I'm switching to your method. Instead of a computer, I use an inexpensive tablet with an electronic catalog to conserve space. It also has google translate on it to help with identifying stamps.

That plastic container for hinges looks like a waste collector. I use my Empress Tea tin for waste mount cuttings & hinges. Looks much nicer than the similar plastic container I had been using. "The Empress" is a grand hotel on the waterfront in downtown Victoria, British Columbia. The have a right-fancy tea service in the afternoon.

Well, my desk is usually a complete mess, so instead I present this picture of what's right behind my desk - my homemade stamp shelves with the "nice" part of my collection. The old wooden file boxes are full of glassines mostly. They get a little more crowded each year but still a bit of room - and there's a cabinet with doors right beside it to hide all the unsightly stuff ...

My tiny little desk in my cabin on my offshore rig Quite a struggle even to find space for two albums and a laptop. I am presently transferring Hungary from stockbooks to Vario Grande pages. The desk is so small the albums are protruding out into free air. It is a challenge - but doable!

I know, annoying set-up, not exactly like the cabin in a cruise-ship I only need a cord for the PC and my own light (special daylight-bulb off course!) - that spagetti of cords is part of the standard outfit in each cabin.
