My uncle (may he rest in peace) was a civil engineer. He mainly worked on large scale projects, mostly water related, starting from the late 50s. He traveled the world, and was involved in construction of different large-scale projects in many countries mostly South American and African. As such, received a lot of correspondence from all those countries, which was very convenient for him being a light stamp collector. Admired the Dutch, with their polders and land conquest from the sea. Had a cute little collection of Dutch stamps (they are truly were and still are a great nation). Anyhow, as he reached his 70s, he passed all of his stamp collection to me. Nothing special, just a nice WW accumulation. Here I post pics of 3 full sheets containing 10 * 10 stamps in each that my uncle brought from the state of Biafra. Biafra lies right in the circumvent of the African continent and was a part of Nigeria. On 30 of May 1967 it declared independence from Nigeria. This brought up a very bloody war in which Biafra was defeated and reclaimed by Nigeria on January 1970. The independent state of Biafra was recognized by several African countries and supported by some others including Israel. For that reason, my uncle found himself in Biafra, being involved in some engineering project. Being a stamp collector couldn’t resist acquiring full sheets of first stamps of this young state. There is no high monetary value in each of these stamps, but I wonder how much would the full sheets cost. Unfortunately, they are at poor condition. Foxing and even black stains on the back side.

kostia84 - Very nice scans of Biafra and fyi, here in Eastern Canada (french language) we used to say......like a "Biafrais", which is the adjective of Biafra and meaning the poorest of all - Thesee people have had a hard time and it is good to see their stamps - I wish I had a copy (not a sheet) !! Thanks Rene, very interesting. Never could imagine that the impact of this war was so large. Former to posting, I read a little about Biafra on the internet. To tell you the truth never heard of it or of their struggle. But indeed, a lot is said about their suffer. And as it seems a lot of countries and private organizations gave aid to Biafran people. There is even a thread on this issue on the forum.
