Last year, I had the idea of making an event cover to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo XVII mission — humankind's last lunar visit to date. In early December, I mailed my cover off to the post office at Cape Canaveral, FL, with a polite request for a Dec. 19 postmark (the date on which the mission formally ended, along with the Apollo program). I waited five months, eventually assuming the cover had been lost. But here it is! The postmaster put a Cape Canaveral postmark on the SASE it came back in, too, which shows that this cover wasn't serviced til this April. I love when a postmark request takes a long time to make its way back to me. What a fun surprise!

What a great album! I'm starting a space topical collection of worldwide but I downloaded that album and I think I'm going to fill it up with stamps! Especially since it is all US. And I did not realize that the US had that many space related stamps. Thanks for posting that! brookbam

That Paraguayan souvenir sheet is stranger than strange. The slogan - "Here Earth First Oon", etc. - is obscured by the medal (which may have been decoupaged onto the souvenir sheet, or more likely printed using some opaque ink or other substance). The placement of that medal, combined with the two rings above it, gives the appearance of a tribute to Mickey Mouse. And if that isn't bad enough, below Buzz Aldrin's signature (and BTW, that likeness of Aldrin looks like a death mask, not that the other two are exactly prizes) a printed text reads "Centenario de la Peopeya Nacional de 1864-1870". That "national epic" was Paraguay's war with Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil - yeah, more than half of the South American continent, all at the same time. As you can imagine, by the time it was over there weren't many people left in Paraguay, and I'm not quite sure why the combatants didn't just split the land up among themselves. Of all the themes to combine with a triumph of humanity like the lunar landing, I can't think of many that are less appropriate. The mouse ears encircle a world map whose relevance to these themes is unclear to me. And it looks like "Primer Descenso Humano en la Luna" might be yet another overprint; it overlaps a bit with Richard Nixon's signature. I could be wrong about that. But I'm not gonna beat myself up over it if I am, because whoever designed this stamp was wrong about almost everything!(Apologia: hrdoktorx, I'm not trying to insult or offend you because you posted this souvenir sheet. In fact, I'm glad you did because it's fascinating. There are a lot of bad space thematics around, some from the Trucial States, a few from newly constituted African republics. This one is complicated compared to ordinary badly-made space thematics: complicated enough to have gotten me going off on a rampage, obviously. I hope it's OK.)

New issue from French Andorra, showing the "tears of St. Lawrence". All Canadians of course know that St. Lawrence is celebrated on August 10 th, the day Jacques Cartier entered the river for the first time, hence its name. So the tears of St. Lawrence here refer to the Perseid meteor showers that occur this time of year.
