Whilst sorting and inspecting the stamps and revenues that Chris ( Beryllium Guy) has kindly sent me as the generous "2nd Uncle Bill’s Giveaway", these two revenues, with Chris’s memo of “… came from a French-Japan collection”, really attracted my interest; General Revenue (General Duty), Meiji White Paper (1898), 2 Sen green and 10 Sen rose, Barefoot (2006) No, 28 and 31, Hasegawa (2016) No. 188A and 191, with oval cancellation “ PL. DOURILLE / YOKOHAMA / JAPON”. And here's my findings ! - Hironobu

The origin of this cancellation could be very likely to be a silk trade company P. Dourille & Co., located in No 164 Yamashita-cho, Yokohama. This company is listed in a brochure entitled “Yokohama The World’s Greatest Broadcasting Port of Silk”, and in page 18 as “P. Dourille & Co., No 164 Yamashita-cho, Yokohama”. link to page 18 of the brochure. The company is also mentioned in an article in magazine “France Japon Éco”, issue 127 ÉTÉ 2011 (published by La Chambre de commerce et d'industrie française du Japon (CCI France Japon)), p.56. ( see here for PDF) Here, in an article on Justin Serre, who was the president of a company Poirier-Robin et Compagnie, it is mentioned that his company has joined the group of few French companies in Yokohama; and amongst the ten French companies, Dourille & Co. is mentioned as a raw silk export company originating in Lyon; More detail on the company follows. - Hironobu

According to a thesis entitled “Les relations entre Lyon et la Chine au XIXe siècle Essai d’histoire commerciale” by Eric Hamaide, 1999 ( thesis submitted to Université Lumière-Lyon-II ), the company P. Dourille & Co was established in mid 1870s (note that article “France Japon Éco” says 1879) and was the second largest French silk trading company settled in Yokohama. Silk trading business by the Dourille family is also mentioned in “Harbin to Hanoi: The Colonial Built Environment in Asia, 1840 to 1940” (ed. Laura Victoir and Victor Zatsepine), P.69 ( preview available in Google Books); This also shows the strong relation of this company to silk trading between Japan and France back in the old days. So it could be considered that the two revenues, bearing the "PL. DOURILLE / YOKOHAMA / JAPON" cancellation, was used between 1898 (the issuance of the revenue stamp) and 1923 (end of the company, according to France Japon Éco article), and was attached to a document of silk export from Yokohama to Lyon. I would like thank to Chris ( Beryllium Guy) for providing me the opportunity to undergo this interesting investigation ! - Hironobu
