Printing errors and what to do... a timely topic stainlessb I recently have begun curating and mounting my collection of Canada’s “Imperial Penny Postage” and noted a spelling error "gray vs. grey" on this page and am pondering the reprint question...I think I can live with this one though ;-)

Here are a few more pages from the effort of mounting my collection of Canada’s “Imperial Penny Postage” including major plate re-entries and retouches, along with the issue’s different cancel types and usage...
Thanks to the forum and its membership for providing the inspiration to undertake this effort!

Depends on how egregious the error is. Some, I re-print the entire double-sided page. Others? Meh... I let pass. On some, I scratch out & correct in pen! Now those will eventually be replaced, but they can stay as they are for now.

I've finally started to create custom pages for Canada. I'm still a bit uncertain about how many spaces to include for all the varieties etc - where to set the line? Here's an example of the first of 2 pages for the 'First Pence issue': Whenever I am able to find images of the varieties, I like to include them for future reference, example given: Still a work in progress!! Does anyone else has DIY pages for classic Canada to share for inspiration?

Jon blaamand - I posted 2 pages in this thread, on Page 1 and others elsewhere (Canada - France) This page is an example (cropped for space) of the simplicity of my Custom Pages with pertinent details at a minimum and other details in my Inventory of each stamp. One stamp is missing..87xx (precancelled) impossible to find ! I will ask WERT René

Nice page and stamps René! I'm having problems to see the details on my smartphone, but I think I am seeing 3 spaces for the same stamp, #85i, - or am I wrong?

Thanks Jon blaamand - There are 3 of the 85i but of different quality. I was unable to find a No 87xx (precancelled) on Delcampe or Ebay.....it is rare actually but will search elsewhere. René

Ok, thanks. Several spaces for the same stamp is slightly out of the ordinary, but why not? That's the beauty of making your own pages, freedom to do exactly what one feels like 😅😅 I like it, the pages certainly reflect these are custom made for your stamps that way.

Horror vacui; just like my garden, my custom album pages fear an empty space…
I think there are two basic types of custom album pages, collector and exhibition. The first is what I call collector pages, these are created with all the known issues, varieties, etc. that an individual is interested in collecting either for a specific country, region, series, etc. and is likely the more difficult to create as one needs to have a plan or goal for the collecting interest in mind to begin with, otherwise there will be plenty of empty spaces on the page. Once created though, the need to fill the voids becomes self-evident.
The second, the exhibition style has no empty spaces and is a mounting of items culled from the stockbooks. These pages have no empty spaces and are exhibition ready; whether that be for an exhibition of one or for the many to enjoy. As new items are added to the collection, new pages will need to be created or older ones re-written to accommodate the newer material. The empty spaces, those desired missing items remain in the stockbook or on the wish list and not on the pages themselves.
In either case, the desire or need to fill the void and plug up the empty space(s) is of course what drives the collecting interests! Whether collector pages or exhibition style, their creation is more art than science and is as unique process as with the collection itself.
Here one of my latest exhibition style pages (Canada Imperial Penny Postage Scott Nos. 85 & 86)

Exhibition pages qualify as literature (my humble opinion) and deserve more attention and preservation.

It's been more than 1 and half year since I started collecting and I have been using stock books throughout.... but of late after looking at all the nice pages posted on this thread . I was also thinking to print my own Album pages, but for the start I will only do Australia since I have a lot of stamps and also a catalogue (then GB and GDR). I was thinking Australia from 1930's onwards to 1980's or so.... since this period I have a lot. Before I think about printing anything , would like answers to the following questions Paper- will Ivory paper of 160+ GSM do? Ivory paper is acid free and not too expensive. Plastic Protective Sleeves- I saw many on Amazon with 11 punched holes, is that OK? Binder- i have seen many on Amazon but would prefer to buy it in person. Should I use 2 hole or 3 hole ones? Which ones are better to handle? Mounts or Hinges ? - I have checked up many Indian stamp dealers, they don't seem to be a having mounts, and if they do the prices are astronomical (Rs 800 for a small pack= 8$)can someone help me with a Indian source? I do have about 50-60 hinges someone sent me but I have seen that no one uses them much? Since we don't have a good printer at home and buying one specially for this job won't be feasible so I'll be printing these pages at a printing shop outside (known person) and finally can someone suggest places from where I can download Ready Pages for Australia? (Don't want to edit anything since that will be quite a job!!) Thanks in advance ! Nikhil

I too have been inspired by this thread nikhil and all the thought that goes into custom made pages as shared in this thread. The only caveat is, when I do read or re-read the postings, I question my own pages and begin to re-think their design.
As for the pages themselves, I am at the same point you are and will need to have my pages printed through a local printer. The advantage is, we can work with them to select the right paper and perhaps even go for that the warm yellowish sepia look spoken of on this blog - Classical Period Albums or I have even seen some pages with a bluish tint that looks quite nice. Choices do not stop after the page design!
As for the paper, I think you are ok with the 160+ GSM weight. I see most individuals referencing 170-190 gsm archival paper. Just like the paper, I think the binders and sleeves should be chosen based on being readily availability in your area in case you need to add addition materials and want to guarantee a consistent look and feel.
As for the hinges vs. mounts., I have the same question especially for used material especially if the sheets are going into sleeves, does it make a difference?
Perhaps others can weigh in as well...
Look forward to seeing your pages!

I place everything in mounts even though I do us “sheet protectors” which I use primarily to not have to give up print space for hole punches
And if I am working on a page iit can be viewed separately from the binder until I actually need access (takes up less surface area than an open album)

Thanks renden, stainlessb and stanley64 for your replies!! As for mounts and hinges, I think I will follow Mr. firstfrog2013 's late Mom's method of hinging stamps less than $1 and mounting more than $1 . Also, most probably I will be using the pages which renden sent me yesterday... So, the holes be punched within the sheet? or should the sheet be of a bigger width? Or is Protective Sleeves better since no punching is required ??

nikhil - congratulations on your desicion to move from stockbooks to album pages. You needed only 1,5 years to decide, whilst it took myself more than 20 years to reach that same insight 😊 I think stanley64 gave you sound advice, go by material easily available where you are. I'm using 160g ivory paper, that weight seems perfect to me, proper rigid sheets without adding too much bulk to the folders. Sheet protectors or not? Personal choice. I use them as I find the stamps get more protection so I can flip pages with no concern for stamps getting caught or fall of, as well as leaving more available space for stamps. If using sheet protectors, I would suggest the ones open both at top and side, that makes it so more easy to insert and pull out pages, with less risk of stamp snugging. Again, personal preference. Hinges? Personally I detest them, but that's just me. If using mounts it gets easier to replace a poor copy for a better one later. But then it's also a matter of availability and cost. Whatever you do you will probably make your own experiences, trial and error, and arrive at what preference works best for you. The main thing is that you are happy, so do whatever you please to arrive at that place. Good luck, happy stamping 😊

Stamp mounts are not cheap.
For example, a package of Scott/Prinz 215mm long by 25mm tall (stamp size) lists for $7.99. Most dealers (those with brick and mortar stores) will sell at list price. Supply houses sell for 25 to 35% off list.
For a typical 20x25 stamp, you end up paying about 4 cents to mount a stamp. I prefer mounts since constantly upgrading as I get new material. With hinfes you have to deal with stamp and hinge removal from page. This can be difficult depending on the brand of hinge and your ability to mount with least amount of moisture. If you use a pre-printed album, you risk damaging the page and not being able to replace.

Agreed angore and in hindsight, I wish I had known or thought of the standard length of mount strips before embarking on a collection of US Transportation coil series in strips of 5. Each strip is 110 mm long; my solution, cut the strips in half and have the perforations stick out on the ends, aka "toes from beneath the blanket"... otherwise, it will cost a small fortune to mount the collection.

What I'm using for my custom pages, in case its helpful to others. 67 lb/148 gsm cream paper from Staples, fairly inexpensive, found the ivory colour not quite as nice. Use mounts exclusively, even for the cheap stamps. Due to consistency/re-use of mounts % page. Don't use sheet protectors. Vario F binders from Lighthouse, 3-ring and punch the pages to match. Really like the high quality of the binders, and order them from Arpin here in Canada (often have them on sale). For the pages themselves, been through a few steps. Started with Scott International, then moved to Lighthouse, then to Palo, then to Steiner, now finally to creating my own using AlbumEasy . So now I have parts of my collection in each. My opinions, for what they're worth, on each - Scott Intl - way too much on each page, and mine are the old 2-sided pages looking pretty old and weathered. Don't like how Scott breaks up long-running series onto multiple pages. That being said, still have most of my classic WW in them, because that's what I inherited. Lighthouse - very high quality, but expensive, but when using Scott #s as main reference, can be a little hard to match up. I did create a cross-reference list to match each Lighthouse Canada pages to the Scott #s, and that helped a lot. For my Germany in Lighthouse, use Michel more so they work quite nicely. Palo - also high quality, but expensive, especially if you get the pages with mounts. Just too pricey for me to hold a whole classic worldwide collection. Essentially high end Steiner format. So now have some of the French colony collection in those. Steiner - a great service, well worth the $50 to get all those pages. However, don't like some of the layouts used, find them too busy, also don't like the standard font/issue descriptions. So started modifying the original PDFs but found that too finicky AlbumEasy - what a great program, easy to layout pages however you like. I roughly follow Scott order, adding/subtracting/rearranging as fits my collection. Keep the layout clean and simple, because that's what I like. I use Steiner pages as a reference to quickly get stamp box dimensions. Pretty happy with that so far, but of course, always room for change and improvement... Anyways, all of this just my humble opinion, but since we're discussing DIY pages...

angore at $0.04 for 22 x 25 you must have a hood source- I just purchased 6 packages (240 black Showgard) and it works out to just over $0.08 each with shipping factored in! This was the best price I could find online/EBay and I prefer the mounts even for low value stamps as it keeps the pages / presentation (even if I may be the only one to see) uniform. If i receive a stamp with a hinge it's soaked of, unless unused, then I cut at the hinge fold. If it looks like IO can tease the hinge off the stamp I will (I see little difference in a MH stamp whether a portion of the hinge remains or not) nikhil for the sleeve/protoectors I prefer the ones that are just slightly larger tan the printed page. i use the ones that are accessable from top (or bottom I suppose ...). I used D-Ring binders and store long page edge down so the sheets/pages hang down. The one negative I see to the sleeves is if stored in an upright D-ring binder, the 'sag" and can develop a "roll" to the 'holed" edge of the sheet
