What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...

Thanks Beryllium Guy for exploring the hotel choice by cjoprey. Any hotel is good enough for me, as it long as it has a bed and a desk to do some work on - stamp collectors are often easy to please as long as we can do our stuff Thanks to all others participating in this thread. I really hope to make this event myself. My wife will be away (leaving me with 3 kids), but I do believe mother-in-law can come to the rescue. Hope to see you all there!

Many thanks to Londonbus1 , blaamand , and barbu for your comments.... along with cjoprey , renden , anglobob , and perhaps others, I hope that we will all be meeting one another in person for the big show! Photos of the Area: Station to HotelAs promised, here are some pictures to go along with the earlier description. Another post will follow with further descriptions and pictures of other aspects of what lies ahead! Exterior View of King's Cross Station Cross Streets Noted on the Corner of the King's Cross Station Building: Follow York Way to the Hotel Exterior of the Hub by Premier Inn (Note Small Green Sign); Franco Manca pizzeria is a more obvious landmark. View of our room at the Hub by Premier Inn: basic in essentials, but very clean and modern.

Thanks for the overview Chris ( Beryllium Guy )! I hope my choice wasn't too onerous! No, worries, Chris.... not at all onerous. The location is good, and it will meet our needs very well, I think. Good choice! Photos of the Area: Hotel to Show VenueThe London 2020 venue will be the Business Design Centre (BDC), which is about 0.75-0.8 mile (1.25 km) from the Hub Hotel. It took us 15-20 minutes to walk it. In principle, one could take the Underground to get one stop closer to BDC, but in the end, we conclude that while it may mean a bit less walking, it will not save any time. Walking seems like it will be the best way to get to the show (from the Hub Hotel near King's Cross). Entrance to the BDC where the London 2020 Stamp Exhibition will be held. On the walk from the Hub Hotel to the BDC, may be found the Thornhill Arms pub.... Another inviting pub between the hotel and BDC is called The Angelic.

Possible Activities in Addition to the Stamp ShowAfter the show, possible meeting places abound in the area. The Hub Hotel itself has Happy Hour specials from 17:00-19:00 that include two-for-one drinks, and a free cheese plate with the purchase of at least one drink. We didn't get to try it this past weekend, but it looked like a good deal in a nice space. I could easily imagine our group assembling there at least one evening. In addition to the two pubs depicted in the previous post, there are also many other restaurants, pubs, and other attractions. For those who want alternatives to the stamp show, both the Postal Museum and the British Library are nearby. In our opinion, the Postal Museum seems geared more towards children and youth groups. It is costly at £17 per person, although it apparently features an underground rail-car system that was formerly used to move the mail. Now, it seems to be a thrilling ride. Exterior Entrance of the Postal Museum Interior Entrance of the Postal Museum The British Library seems like a better bet for those looking for an alternative to the stamp show. It houses one of the world's greatest stamp collections (perhaps the greatest). There is plenty to see, but unfortunately, photos of the collection are not allowed, so I can only show the exterior of the British Library, which is, at least to my view, rather unremarkable. It is a nice facility, with some incredible stamps, postal stationery, and more.... Exterior Entrance of the unassuming British Library, where is housed one of the world's greatest stamp collections.

Thanks for the pictures Beryllium Guy ! Now I am a little homesick ! Of course there is always the Charing Cross Collectors market first thing on the Saturday morning. It should also be remembered that there is a £10 entry fee for the first day of the Exhibition. It's usual for this event.

blaamand........probably not ! Might take about 45 minutes. But no more than 20 minutes either way from Kings Cross by foot and underground. We can always have a picnic here when the stamp overload takes over ........... A memorial park for heroes and heroines of times past........and where Postal workers from the former London Head Post Office opposite would enjoy their lunch. Or we could pay homage to Mr.Hill ! He stands proudly outside the former Head Post Office and Postal Museum not far from St.Paul's Cathedral. The double Post Box seen nearby has one side for Meter Mail and one side for Stamped Mail !! You can take the tube. I think you will get there from King's Cross Station on the Piccadilly line to Leicester Square, change to Northern line to Embakment station. This might not be correct, but I had to try The entrance to the market. Some dodgy pictures I took in sept 2019. This was early in the morning.

NOTES. there is a £10 entry fee on day 1 of the Show....... the Embankment market is Saturday morning only.....no other days. the travel by tube involves a change of tube station which means walking and stairs between Tube lines ... not good for older knees.
I prefer bus from Kings Cross to Angel for the show and No 91 bus Kings cross to Strand Savoy hotel or Trafalgar Square for Embankment . don’t forget the benefits of an Oystercard for convenient transport in London

daveg28........Yes. I don't know details yet but there is always a cover produced for the Big shows and a different cancel for each day of the Exhibition. tobben63.....nice pics of the Market. Yes, they do turn up early. I usually arrive by 7am and it is already quite busy. Such fun. Your route to the Embankment is the best way without walking.............if going up and down stairs and long walks is not a problem on the knees as vikingeck so rightly pointed out. But we shall cross these little problems and all will be OK. For those who are in London later in the week there is a very good Stamp Fair at the National Hotel, Russell Square on Friday May 8th from 9am. This one has long been one of my favourite events but I have to check the dealers list as some may be at the Exhibition venue. Just thought I would mention it. Londonbus1

We should get that information although I have not found it yet. This could be a Royal Mail thing, or it could be be arranged by the Show organizing committee. Or both so there may be more than one. If you need anything when details emerge, just let me or one of us know. I am sure I can speak for everyone when I say it will not be a problem to fill Exhibition wants lists. Here is the cover from London 2010, quite a simple thing and it most likely will be this time too.

Do they just frank it with a Machin, or will it be a commemorative stamp? (Like maybe those Royal Navy ships stamps from last September. I LIKE those a LOT).

Re : National Hotel show May 8
I went there in 2018 and found a lot of good material.I bought a lot of French Colonies from Robert Uden stamps, who I see has a booth at London 2020.A lot of thw smaller dealers probably couldn,t afford a booth at 2020. Another dealer I frequently use,Lizandystamps, will be at the National Hotel. I plan....wife permitting...to go on May 8

daveg28.........you buy the envelope and make up your own cover then put it in the special box for the cancel of the day. They send it sealed with plastic cover to avoid damage. Good service....at least it used to be, assuming the same as it's International !! If stamps you want are from the last year they should be on sale at the RM stand. anglobob........we shall arrange to go together as I plan on coming back to London on the 8th for this event.

Here are anglobob and yours truly at London 2010, A Festival of Stamps. On this day, as we were leaving we got a glimpse of the sport on TV showing that my soccer team had won 8-0 and so too the League title. I remember it like yesterday !! I also did a shift working on the 'Stamp Active' Youth Stand. It was a lot of fun and a nice experience with most Kids coming late on and very few school visits. In Israel at National and International shows, there are many school parties in attendance nearly all day long. They even have two hours to themselves before official opening time. In the UK, I didn't see much of that. Sadly. Londonbus1.......reminiscing !

Update (for those interested) :
The latest 'London 2020' Newsletter has just arrived and the main news is that the Organizing Committee are monitoring the Coronavirus situation but as there are no problems thus far in London, everything is going ahead as planned. My country however are being overly cautious and advising against all unimportant travel to anywhere in the world. Anyone coming back from affected areas, Italy for example, must self-quarantine for 14 days. (I love that, 'Self-Quarantine' !!!). One of my neighbours is returning this evening from Tuscany where the Italian problems started and some here in my village are concerned. Rightly so.

UPDATE:
I need to check at the latest news from other countries but the most recent updates from Israel do not bode well. There were already no flights to China, Thailand and Italy. Anyone arriving from those Nations had to go into quarantine for 2 weeks. From last Friday everyone coming from those countries were checked at the airports here. Israel has very few with the Coronavirus and their actions of late are totally understandable given the worldwide problems we are facing. Today it got a bit worse. Anyone arriving from Spain, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland will be checked at the airport and must go into self-quarantine for 2 weeks. It is not looking good. I'd like to ask what the situation is like in your country ?
Fingers crossed still...........

Londonbus1Canada has not been affected very much yet and I am also following the news though since I have no plans to travel other Countries in the next 6 months I just hope that COVID-19 is contained or we find an anti-viral drug that works - We have 20 cases presently but not in my part of the big Country we have. Forget the vaccine for now......it will be longer. CDC.GOV is the web site in the US to get the best updates René btw - London 2020 will probably be cancelled (by the Airlines and Heathrow)
