What I collect: Pretty much everything now, but may focus on Japan and pre-WW2 British colonies
|
Post by zeebanker on Nov 13, 2019 3:27:40 GMT
Hi, I'm sorting through a box of stamps that I recently acquired and need help identifying some stamps and an envelope. The stamps either have no country name or something in a language that I've not been able to identify and google. The envelope looks to be a pre-paid letter that can be folded and mailed. Its from India and looks to be Queen Victoria, but I cannot place the timing of the envelope, or identify it or read the cancels.
Appreciate all and any help!
Please let me know if I've contravened some uploading rules - this is my first time!
Thanks and looking forward to learning more about these mysteries in my collection.

Here’s a few I can help you with. I don’t know the Scott numbers for the individual stamps and it’s too late to do much digging.
2 Spain War Tax Stamp 4 Spain 5 Austria Postage Due 6 Bosnia & Herzegovina 9 & 10 Russia Army of the North (there are a lot of forgeries out there)
Hope this helps.

9 & 10 Russia Army of the North (there are a lot of forgeries out there) I think coastwatcher meant to include stamp 11 as Russia Army of the North as well. All 3 of your stamps are genuine.

Items like this are called postal stationery. The first British one of these was the Mulready letter sheet and the Mulready envelope of 1840. and similar letter sheets evolved into the more familiar Airmail letter sheets of recent times
Your Indian Lettersheet has a stamp imprint with a face value of Half Anna for local postage, first issued in 1857 , and the date stamp of use in this case from VIZAGAPATAM seems to be Mar 1 1871 , so in use for quite a few years

The only thing I can add to @ identification above is #2-Spain is war tax; and #4-Spain is a telegraph use punch which diminishes its value.

The Spain War Tax stamp #2 was issued to help pay for the 1898 Spanish American war.

Well it does not appear to have any postal function.
In my book Rene they are all 4 in the Cinderella category! "Cinderella" covers any stamp-like label which is not a postage stamp
Revenues, Charity,( but not semipostals which have some postage function), Local issues, TB seals , Scout labels , Christmas seals, Propaganda labels, hotel stamps , telegraph stamps, tax labels, Airmail etiquettes etc etc are all different categories of Cinderella

Here you go anglobob :-)
According to this site, the stamp shown was issued to benefit the Flemish Waffen SS Legion on 23 December 1941, who were fighting in Russia on the Eastern Front - "Mourning the Ancient" The stamps originally came in sheetlets of four and the breadth of material available for the issue is quite astounding including overprints, covers, etc...
Happy collecting!

If you have a Michel catalogue: the stamps are listed following to the chapter "Deutsche Besetzungsausgaben 1939/45 (Zara)" ((German Occupation Issues))
in the chapter "Private Ausgaben 1939/45" (private issues). The stamps were charity labels and had no franking value. However they could have been put on fieldpost-letters and exist cancelled. But as they had no franking value cancels have to be considered as c.t.o. Genuine private letters are very rare, but many forged cancellations are known.
