What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I contacted the seller of this cover regarding his shipping price and received this verbatim reply: "Well as this is dictated by US homeland security I thought you might have known why Under your regulations normal airmail is not available for use by Australia Post as this item is classified as “goods” But when people ask, I do send it by airmail at $5 but if rejected the item is refunded but not the postage. Let me know what you want to do That is why there is a suggestion to email for a postage quote. It is all about the US and then you guffaw at us, seriously , some people are dopes" Interesting and rude reply. Some sellers seem to make things more complicated than they have to be. In my listings anything I feel can go as letter mail I manually enter the shipping costs with a domestic, US and international fixed prices. Canada Post letter mail is only supposed to hold paper products but I have shipped 100's of souvenir spoons, pens and Zippo lighters cushioned between cardboard. It keeps shipping at a realistic level. In 20 years I have had 2 or 3 damaged by sorting machines. I have to fib sometimes if I have to use the postal clerk if I do not have enough stamps on hand. If I end up with an item that goes for way more than I expect I will then use more secure mail service and eat the added shipping to protect myself. I take it JeffS that you are passing on this cover.

I am describing my experience as a Romanian buyer of stamps from the US and Sweden. Both envelopes have the size of 230 x 180 mm and there were approximately 300-400 stamps in them. The Swedish plain paper envelope (stamps evenly distributed over the entire surface and protected in a plastic foil envelope) was no more than 3-4 mm thick and arrived quickly and in perfect condition. The US paper envelope with plastic bubbles on the inside (stamps placed in 7-8 glassine envelopes) was more than 15 mm thick. I suspect that any envelope that raises suspicions that it does not contain, according to the law, only correspondence, is checked by customs. This also happened with the US envelope, which the next day was returned to the US with the mention that it did not comply with customs requirements. The American sender (it was a gift) was kind and filled out a customs declaration (so that the recipient from Romania does not have to pay customs taxes, be sure to mention that it is a gift, that the value should not exceed 45 Euros and that the stamps are no longer worth postage) I suspect that in other countries the checking of envelopes is done not only visually - but also by scanning - and in this case you can see the contents with stamps - which fall into the "goods" category - and problems start to appear. That's why I use (to the displeasure of some correspondents who collect envelopes) envelopes as simple as possible, stamped with usual stamps without anything special that would attract the suspicion that they contain something other than correspondence. And yet the last 2 envelopes to Canada did not arrive or the correspondents forgot to confirm.

The Clementine citrus is not often found featured on stamps, thus this tidy solo use on an internal (?) Algerian cover is a treasured addition to my Citrus collection.

I stumbled across this Australian slogan cancel promoting a MID-AUGUST ORANGE WEEK SOUTH AUSTRALIA UPPER MURRAY from RENMARK S.A. AUST., 1963
Notations on the back of the cover indicate this slogan was in use from July 8 to August 14 1963 and a possible catalog number of 37519.
I wonder if peter can tell me if Australia has other slogan postmarks relating to citrus, especially oranges.

I wonder if peter can tell me if Australia has other slogan postmarks relating to citrus, especially oranges. Hi JeffS , the notation is correct with respect to the dates for the 1963 usage of this slogan. Renmark's Orange Week slogan was also used in 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1967. In 1973, a new slogan was produced and used only in that year: COME TO RENMARK ORANGE WEEK There is a town in New South Wales, named Orange, and they have the following slogans, but these refer to the place rather than the fruit: - VISIT ORANGE CHERRY BLOSSOM CARNIVAL [Date] OCTOBER (used 1957-58)
- VISIT ORANGE CHERRY FESTIVAL 2ND - 10TH OCTOBER (used 1959)
- ORANGE CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL [DATE] NOVEMBER (used 1961-62)
- ORANGE CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL NOVEMBER (used 1963)
As for the catalog number. I see these types of numbers on the back of a lot of covers bearing Australian short-term slogans, and believe that these were part of a single collection that has been broken up over the years. I haven't been able to equate these to a specific catalog or numbering system, and were likely a personal cataloging system of the owner.

I received this cover from a friend a couple of days ago and at first thought it was a magnificent multicolor litho ad cover. When I pulled it from its cover sleeve and looked closer, it is actually a cover with cut-out, pasted down oranges taken from an unknown source.
I did a follow-up search on eBay and found an example of the envelope as printed. The condition of this example is in too bad of condition to warrant its purchase, but now I have something to add to my search list.

JeffS the latest issue of "The American Philatelist" has a spread about Topical collecting, the example in the article being Typewriters. I immediately thought of you Jeff. Your "Oranges and other Citrus Fruit" collection must be included in a future edition of the magazine. I've said this before, it just amazes me how one could take a mundane topic like Oranges and then blow the roof off with more possibilites and iterations of things philatelically citrus than I ever could imagine. I think of your collection as the Poster Child of Topical diversity; it's exceptional. Rob

Not to detract from REL1948 's heart-felt and complimentary posting for JeffS efforts of which, I am sure, we all support, I would like to think that the article which appeared in the most recent edition of "The American Philatelist" made the distinction between topical and thematic collecting. Jeff's thematic collection truly does cover the breadth and depth of the citrus topicals... Have fun and happy collecting!

A recent addition, a lovely advertising cover from an orange packer from Riverside California, 1930. It features 4 reproductions of crate labels. This is an unexpected treasure as the only other philatelic item I am familiar with is a stamp from Australia showing an antique crate label.

That cover is a beauty, JeffS, thanks for posting! Riverside is not far from where I am living now, and I promise to keep an eye out for any old citrus-related material around here. Like Rob ( REL1948), I really enjoy your topical specialty in this area, and I am amazed at what you have done in this area. Just superb!

Saint Leo Abbey The Church that Oranges Built
Printed envelope, not a cinderella. ST. LEO FLORIDA precancelFrom the Saint Leo Website
Saint Leo’s beloved Abbey Church was nicknamed “the church that orange juice built.”
“In order to save money, Saint Leo traded boxes of its ‘Abbey Brand’ oranges and grapefruit from its citrus groves to Saint Meinrad Abbey [Archabbey] of Indiana, which operated a sandstone quarry,” states Pioneer College: The Centennial History of Saint Leo College, Saint Leo Abbey, and Holy Name Priory, by James J. Horgan.
“The image is somewhat exaggerated, however. Saint Leo provided fruit, not juice. And less than 10 percent of the cost of the church was accommodated in this manner. The bulk of the structure was built of Florida limestone brick, with red cedar from the abbey’s own trees for the interior beams and trim.”
Ground was broken on August 15, 1936, for the Saint Leo Abbey Church, but was often delayed because of war and the need to raise funds. The church was consecrated on January 29, 1948.

This little gem of a cover arrived last week. I never expected to find this Malaysia cut-to-shape stamp featuring the citrus fruit the Pomelo (various spellings) used on cover. The cover has additional postage on the reverse.
I actually have one on my countertop ready for breakfast in the morning. They are a really delicious fruit, much like the grapefruit but without the sour taste

Hi JeffS, Your post made me laugh. I've actually seen a display of several dozen various "orange peelers". The Tool club I belong to has a women's auxiliary where some of the wives have incredible collections of their own that they bring to share. A few years ago one woman had a display of patented Apple peeler/corers (close to 40 different), Cherry pitters and Citrus peelers. Some of the citrus tools were simple functionally shaped cutters or knives while others were elaborate mechanical devices like the one below that I grabbed off the internet. I was already familiar with the apple and cherry tools but citrus peeling was a new thing to me that day. I guess if I opened an orange juice stand, I'd need a special tool but until then I'll just use a knife or my teeth... Rob

New in this week, from Estonia, a tangerine-scented self adhesive on backing with attached margin.
Tangerines and gingerbread figures swirl around a Christmas tree. What could be more festive?
Unfortunately the tangerine aroma eludes me, instead, I find an aroma one might find in a bathroom deodorizer.

A dealer friend in Houston who specializes in Latin America sent me notice of these "proofs" from Uruguay. I am typically skeptical of such items and have typically considered them "out the back door" items of printers' make-ready scrap. With these I don't know, and I have not yet found a Uruguay specialist who can confirm or deny.
The first 5 items are from a stamp commemorating the 8th Anniversary of something called the Intergovernmental Group on Citrus Fruit Meeting issued in 1989. It consists of a graphic depicting a cross-section of half an oragne as well as the logo of the UN FAO) logo. A silhouette map of South America and the location of Uruguay is also included.
Imperf varieties include
Green background omitted Blue and brown omitted Mis-registration of green Normal printing but imperf Vertical perforations shifter to left, trimmed between stamp
The last item is from a set of four Export stamps, this stamp featuring Citrus, (an orange and lemon) imperforate showing only blue, yellow and green ink

Several months ago I purchased this souvenir sheet of China apparently featuring orange blossoms. I have lost track of the purchase item and am unable to locate this sheet either in eBay or onine. I am assuming the fruit shown are oranges. Can someone please provide me with a proper catalog reference. Thank you, Jeff The item number on the sheet reads GTY2018-07
