Another town with an "Orange" connection, Orange Springs Florida:
Manuscript postmark dated June 9 1885 The settlement of Orange Springs has been documented as early as the 1820’s when Florida was still a U. S. territory. Fort Russell was built in the vicinity during the period of the Seminole Wars and the area was surveyed and military roads were established. After the war, when the Seminole Indians who occupied the area had been removed and when the Armed Occupation Act encouraged settlement and development, more families moved into the fertile area. Florida became a state in 1845 and the pace of agricultural development quickened with the establishment of cotton plantations and orange groves.
A side note. I have found it necessary to ensure that towns with "Orange" in its name relate to the citrus orange and not William of Orange, etc.

Hi JeffS I just want to let you know that this thread makes me happy. I especially enjoy that you include non stamp related items in your collection. One of the reasons I joined is because you came back. I hope to find a more specialized area to concentrate on and have learned a lot from your posts. Keep embracing your inner orange! Patti

Thank you pattib for your comment. So for you (and anyone else ) a non-philatelic collateral item, an exhibitor medal from the 29TH NATIONAL ORANGE SHOW from 1939 which features an Orange, its blossom and a few leaves.
I've even figured out, in theory, how to mount it on an album page.

Yvert has them listed only with a value of 50 Euros for a set non-perforated, but no details further details. Can members with non-Scott catalogs tell me what they say about these Algeria imperfs please? Jeff

Colnect titles the series, Fruits of the Country. Under variants it does not show a non-perf set, it does however state that there is a variant of the 40f which is called Oranges and Lemons. The variant of this stamp is apparently a color error with green oranges.

I have been negligent in working on my Oranges Philately collection and sharing new pages. Most stamp time has been spent on my Orange Free State provisional cards. Here is my latest Oranges. The Petah Tikva stamp I had mentioned earlier and finally acquired my own example. I found there exists excellent reproductions of this but so far all are marked as such on the back. And the perforations are different.
I also picked up a small lot of Petah Tikva Entertainment Tax stamps which use the same design. These were applied to admission tickets as a sales tax of sorts.

A working page, having some fun today.
If any of my Brit friends here has a spare mint Paddington Bear stamp with him holding his marmalade jar, I could use it.

Your referencing Keiller’s marmalade reminds me that the Scottish city of Dundee is noted for “Jam, Jute and Journalism” , the jam being Dundee Marmalade . According to the label on my breakfast marmalade the commercial production was started in 1797 !

I remember my Mother always had fresh grapefruit in the morning , she said it helped her arthritis.
I have recently been buying Florida pink grapefruit. However is it my imagination or have grapefruit become smaller that they used to be? Or are the skins just thinner ?
Is it a secret packaging ploy to get more in the crate?
by the way I just love the French word ..”pamplemousse”

I think your oranges collection is great, Jeff! So many different items, some of which I'd have never thought of including. That make me want to look for other things to include in the few topicals I have been collecting. It's more than just stamps!

I have really enjoyed reading about your orange collection Jeff. Lovely to see ideas from different people about collecting a topic and all that you can do with the topic. I love how one thing can lead to another from one item. It is also amazing the variety you can collect. Sarah

I agree with both Sarah and Brightonpete, your collection gives me ideas about adding items I never thought about adding to a topical collection and, when I look at them, they make sense to include.

The addition of other ephemera, postcards as illustrations, Cinderellas, labels, medals , badges, newspaper cuttings, anything you can think of which adds to the topic but which don’t fit the rules for a strict thematic, topical exhibit , are allowed in the Open class of stamp shows.
Indeed non philatelic but relevant material is actively encouraged . There are no rules .
One of these days I must start a thread for my “Counterblaste to Tobacco” exhibit, where I have even more freedom than Jeff, on double size A 3 pages. Scanning that size is a problem however.

If any of my Brit friends here has a spare mint Paddington Bear stamp with him holding his marmalade jar, I could use it. Thanks for your recent posts, Jeff. As others have already been commenting, I am also really enjoying your posts and your thematic collection. It is a very interesting way in which you have done it and presented it, and it is giving me thoughts of trying something a little different myself. Thanks for that! I wish I had known that you needed one of the Paddington Bear stamps. I had some of them at one time, but I used them for postage. I just checked, and they are all gone now. I will check around to see if I can find a copy for you. I have some contacts. Jeff, just to be clear, this is what you are looking for? Just a single, mint copy?

How about a little oranges-related quiz/contest?
I recently ordered for my Oranges Philately collection a stamp honoring Agatha Christie and am looking to add a Beatles commemorative.
The quiz is in two parts...
1. Why would I want an Agatha Christie and a Beatles stamp for this collection?
and
2a. Which Beatles stamp would be the most appropriate and
2b. Why?
Quiz closes Wednesday April 28 midnight Texas time. Winner will be determined by the most suitable answers to 2a and 2b.
Prize will be a mint set of fruit stamps including an orange.
Post responses here.
Have fun! (if you want)
Otherwise feel free to be a miserable curmudgeon.

Your post has really got my imagination going Jeffs. Not sure if you have seen these. GB did a set of fruit and vegetable stamps in 2003. They also did some cool first day covers.

I do not want to enter the competition but intrigued by it and loving looking at all things orange. I don't know if you have seen this Agatha Christie stamp. This is on ebay for 99p at the moment. Orange Machin stamp with Agatha Christie.

I'm not sure how Aggie and oranges are a pair, but perhaps the Beatles stamp would be the John Lennon Forever stamp, not sure of Scott's number, because he is coloured orange. Which is pretty much the colour of your former President!
Still looking for Agatha's connection...
