My Oranges Philately is simply a collection.
It goes into too much philatelic detail and quantity for a thematic exhibit.
And, it is too incomplete to be considered a serious Orange Free State collection.
It is what it is Just stuff I like

Great stamps JeffS ! This simplicity of the single orange tree definitely has its ap'peel' ;-)
One small correction to your write-up though, King William III was more than of Dutch heritage, he was Dutch (born in Den Haag 1650) and it is the Huis van Oranje-Nassau that still maintains the Royal seat in the Netherlands to this day...
Groetjes!

First of all, Jeff ( JeffS ), many thanks for starting yet another interesting thread. Nice job! I have long been a fan of classic short-time stamp-issuing entities, and the Orange Free State & Orange River Colony certainly fall into that realm for me. About a year ago, I missed out on a great chance to buy a dealer's stock of these stamps, and I am still regretting that I let that go. Oddly, I had failed to recall/notice that the Orange Free State stamps picture an orange tree. So, thanks for reminding me and for posting your nice stamps from the era. I need to work on filling out my collection as well. Thinking about the orange tree on these stamps and the connection with the Dutch got me to remembering something else: an important brand of beer in Holland (The Netherlands) has the brand name "Oranjeboom" (Orange Tree in English). From the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, I often travelled to the Netherlands on business, and this was the beer that my customer/colleagues drank. I am not sure if there is any connection to the Orange Free State or to philately, but here are some nicely designed logos from the Oranjeboom brand:

The OFS also issued stationery cards, both treditional and a series of "provisional cards as one shown. An interesting aspect of their issue is that the stamps were first affixed to the blank card,
then the printing of text followed (including the crest which ties the stamp to the card).
5 settings of the crest are recorded and two types of card printing, one with address lines for overseas mail, the second without lines supposedly for domestic mail. This application was not always adhered to.
I will post my Orange River Colony next.

I would like to suggest separate boards for Orange Free State and Orange River Colony as the former was under a Boer government and the latter under the British Crown.

JeffS While you consider rephrasing the reference to King William above please note he was King of Great Britain and Ireland, not just England. His reign following the expulsion of King James VIl was consolidated on 12 July 1688 by victory at the Battle of the Boyne , an event still celebrated with marching parades and flute bands by Protestant members of the Loyal Orange Order in Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland. incidentally an irritation in Scotland but cause of much sectarian disturbance and disruption in N. Ireland. I reckon nearly 350 years later it is time to let go.

vikingeck - thanks for the heraldic correction . . . . .
On another matter (or "Now for something completely different")
I purchased this item today, not that it adds to the story of my Oranges Philately, but it was such a pretty item.
While my Oranges Philately is not intended for exhibit I am trying to follow guidelines for thematic and what we call here in the States, a Display Class exhibit, along with postal history.
In a thematic exhibit such a postmarked item woud fe frowned upon as the town postmark has no relevance to the story. "Damn the torpedoes, Full steam ahead" I say.
This is a stamp overprinted for telegraph use with what looks like a town cancel and not a telegraph cancel.

A recent addition to my Orange Free State collection:
Registered, Bloemfontein ORC to London England,
posted February 16, 1901, received March 12.
I bought this for its charm in spite of being grossly overpaid (and also overpriced) at 16 pence (1 shilling, 4 pence.)
Registration fee was 2 pence, first class letter postage to England, 2-1/2 pence. Censor initials H.P.Y., Henry P. Young, Major.

1/- POSTAL NOTE
I picked this up for my oranges philately collection. The stamp indicium at left contains a bit of an orange tree in the coat of arms, as does all other OVS items of this period. Payable at SMITHFIELD, purchased at WEPENER (postmark reads WIPENER) JA 3 99.
The 1-shilling note is the most common, the 1-Pound the scarcest, understandably.
