What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...

Here's a stamp of the Austrian Empire used in Ukraine in 1910, postmarked 'Lemberg / Lwov' which equals LVIV today. The western part of present day Ukraine was part of the Austrian Empire until after WW1, when Austria lost major parts of her territory. Ukraine issued her first separate issues in 1918, so I consider it a forerunner. The Russian ZEMSTVO stamps were also in use in other parts of Ukraine when this was used, and these can also be considered as forerunners for Ukraine. Additionally stamps of Hungary were used in another part of Western Ukraine, so postal history can be complicated, but very interesting

Below is quoted from Beryllium Guy 's post in the Postmark Calendar thread,Great find Chris! This is in my opinion definitively a forerunner. Poland was at this time divided between Germany, Russia and Austria, following the 3rd partition of Poland. The first stamps used in the Austrian part (in the south) were regular stamps of Austria, like the one you have. Austrian stamps were used in this part until Poland re-emerged as an independent state after WW1. In parallel German and Russian stamps were used in the other parts of what was to become Poland (again), so basically forerunners for Poland can be found on both German, Russian and Austrian stamps. (Even Hungarian, as a tiny piece in the south was part of Hungary)

OK, Jon ( blaamand), you beat me to the punch! I was going to re-post that stamp in this thread, too, but since you have already done it for me, I will just let it go. I have been saving up a few other stamps that would fit into this thread, but I have been slow to get them scanned and ready for posting. Sorry for being so slow. It is a fun and interesting thread in any case, and I chose the Postmark Calendar stamp specifically with you and Jens ( barbu) in mind, as I had other options for the date.

Oh I'm sorry that I spoiled your planned post, Chris. I was just thinking the 'invited' response was more appropriate for this thread than in the postmark calendar.
Great if you have more, please let's see them !

Another Astro Hungarian forerunner would be these pre-Italian issues for Lombardy and Venezia . There are still parts of Northern Italy where Austrian German is the local language and there was fierce fighting during WWI between Italy and Germany on this mountainous frontier . used in the cities of MILANO and CODOGNO
