Two perfins turned up as I have been sorting, cataloging and organizing Japanese stamps over the last couple of days. Below are Sc. nos. 103 (left) and no. 100 (right). One of the more comprehensive websites I know of for perfin id is this one, Philatelia, but both of these are unlisted on this website. I thought it was also unusual that the 5 sen, Sc.100 has red cancellation. I have looked at hundreds of Japanese stamps over the last couple of days and the cancellations are reliably and consistently black ink. Does anyone have an idea as to why this one is red? And the same holds true of Sc. 105, why is the cancellation in purple? Revenue cancel?

I defer to others in regards to the cancel color. But I've seen a number of Taiwan covers/documents from the early 20th Century (when still Japanese territory) through the mid-1960's, and the only time I saw purple or red cancels were for: -- revenue cancels -- special commemorative cancels -- chop marks -- company receiving stamp That's not to say that the above didn't also use black ink. But I don't recall ever seeing a color standard postmark on any Taiwan mail, including parcels. Maybe worth looking into Manchurian postal cancels for the red ink cancel? With regards to the perfins, the one at right is definitely a keeper. Maybe a logo, or some stylized combination of katakana symbols? Never seen it before. The D.&Co. perfin, doesn't seem to match any of the usual perfins used in Asia for Dent & Co, Dodwell & Co, nor Davidson & Co. It has an unusual 7 holes for the vertical post in "D". The closest match I could find was a D.&Co. for an Austrian company, but the "C" doesn't match their perfin. In other words, I'm drawing a blank. I should stick to unpunched uncancelled bits of colored paper... k

khj, thank you for your help. Separately, Philatarium, has given me some other avenues to pursue as well.

I found an envelope of perfins from various countries I had set aside and turned up another Japanese perfin below. This is on Sc. 129b, new die 1 1/2s light blue.
