I collect w-w up to and incl. 1950 which are listed in Scott. I recently found this Chinese (?) item in a "lost" envelope and although it seems rather interesting it is absolutely useless for me. If anyone is interested in it he/she is more than welcome in exchange for anything before 1951 - anything: any value, country, condition. Just sent me a postal addy and it's yours. I would rely on your sense of honour as far as exchange is concerned. In amicitia et senectude, valete. Tony V

tonyvella , a similar stamp is currently up for auction on eBay and is identified as an "Old JAPAN Revenue TAX Stamp-RICE INSPECTION". I saw an image of this stamp on another website as well where it was also noted as a Japanese rice tax stamp which leads me to the conclusion that it is a correct identification. Perhaps Philatarium or khj can provide more information.

I didn't have my dictionary handy, so I didn't want to reply until I could confirm. But as it turns out, my Mom is next to me. She was surprised to see it.
I was thinking it might have been a rice ration stamp, so probably good thing I didn't reply earlier.
It is a rice inspection stamp. It should be Chinese, although which authority issued it, not sure. Mom say the location is the top left 3 characters in the oval, but she didn't recognize the location, since she grew up on a Japanese island territory, not on the mainland.
(EDIT: see next post, it is Japanese)

OK, darkormex is correct, it is Japanese. The top left 3 characters are 兵庫縣 (Hyōgo Prefecture).
