Hong Kong Arrival Markings
Arrival markings is a really interesting area of collecting for all stamps and in particular for Hong Kong. Also it is a reminder that globalisation started long before the late 1990s.... Such a pity that they are not on envelopes with the enclosures to see why and to whom they were sent, would be fascinating! So here are a real around the world diverse initial selection.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Lima, Peru
Larnaca, Cyprus
Moulmein, Burma
Salisbury, Rhodesia what is now called Harare, Zimbabwe
Trieste, Austro-Hungary

hkwill - Absolutely wonderful stuff! I am also interested in postmarks, and particular more curious postmarks like arrival postmarks (abroad postmarks). I have a few myself, however your selection is 2nd to none! I also noted that even your profile picture reflects the same kind of good stuff - HK with Mauritius arrival mark. That must be quite rare Thanks for posting, most inspiring! Jon

I don't know if these stamps belong here, but anyway. The first is Amoy, China? The next I'm not sure of. Then there is two Shanghai postmarks I think.

I think the 2cents is Canton China.
these are not arrival marks however. They are legitimate use of Hong Kong stamps at other ports in China where the British had gained restricted trading rights in an otherwise closed country. They are the so called TreatyPorts.
They are recorded and priced in the Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth catalogue at a small premium over normal use, following the regular HongKong listings

WOW WOW WOW!!! Your collection of Aussie arrival markings on HK is nothing but impressive, both in contents and the visual presentation. I would believe the arrival marking made on Thursday island is rather scarce! Well done. I also find arrival postmarks applied abroad to be fascinating witnesses of postal history. I have a few on stamps of HK, but unfortunately none of the ones you are looking for. Good luck in finding them

Not very active at this time as I worked with Mint stamps a part of Summer (Ivory Coast, for ex) Oh ! just found a nice PM on a German classic Scott # 40 and # 53 and 98 (all dups) P.S. this is not a highjack

Thanks for the posting hkwill ; great stamps and cover! The creative DIY album page is the icing on the cake :-) For myself, I think the cork cancel on the St. Helena issue is the favourite... Happy collecting! P.S. For those that need a larger image, simply click on the original image for a full-page version

It is south-east of Pamban and is about 24 kilometres (15 mi) west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and remains uninhabited in the aftermath. Although devoid of inhabitants, Dhanushkodi remains a tourist attraction due to its historical and mythological relevance. So it went Hong Kong, to Dhanushkodi (transit strike) then North to Madras (Chennai) then to Peshawar. ? Seen mail go South Dhanushkodi to Colombo via ferry, thence to Australia (DHANUSHKODI-F = FERRY?)

What I collect: British India -- pre-stamp covers, early India cancels, combination covers, unusual destinations, "small service"

Here are some stamps of Hong Kong canceled on arrival in India. The top three stamps are canceled in Bombay (now Mumbai). The left three stamps on the bottom row were canceled in Calcutta. The B/1 cancel (type 7) though common (less so in Blue), must be relatively rare canceled on Hong Kong stamps. Type 7 cancellors were issued to post offices in the Bengal presidency until 1860, although some post offices were issued type 7 cancellors until 1867. The other stamps here were canceled mostly in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Savantvadi cancel must also be relatively rare – it was a kingdom adjoining Portuguese India.
In the book titled, Hong Kong Arrival Markings 1980 Catalogue, Lee Scamp and Harmon Fine list arrival markings in British India from Bombay, Calcutta, Kukma, and Tuticorin, all of which seem to be from the 1880’s and later.
I don’t know anything about the Hong Kong stamps shown here. If anyone has any interesting observations about these stamps, please share them on this board.

Hi, arvind, and thanks for your post. These are quite a nice grouping of India arrival cancels on early HK stamps. I congratulate you! I am no expert by any means, but I have a special affinity for HK stamps, and so, I would make a couple of small observations about these. The first and last in the top row are "wing margin" copies, but perhaps you already knew that. What is less common about these in particular, in my opinion, is that the wing portions are still intact. Many early collectors used to trim off the wing portions so that the stamps would fit neatly into pre-printed album spaces. In my HK collection, nearly all of my wing-margin copies are trimmed. It's nothing big, but I think it's nice to note. My other comment is to ask: have you checked the 2-cent brown stamp in the bottom row for a watermark? If it is unwatermarked, it is an HK #1, which has much higher CV than the later versions of the stamp, which are found on watermarked paper. I will be curious to know the answer on that. Thanks again for your post.

Thanks for the additional information about the HK stamps. One of the 2-cent brown stamps (the one canceled at Calcutta) does not have a wmk -- the stamp however seems to be gray, not brown. The other one, canceled B/1 has part of a crown wmk.
