In mounting stamps from South Africa, I stumbled into misidentification issues when I noticed there were multiple series. The engraved ones are easy to identify but now stumbling over the photogravure versions. The hyphenation differences are easier.
All have same perf and watermark.
Scott lists two sets
1930-45 34 1p carmine / black 35 1p rose / black
1933-54 48 1p carmine / gray - notes design is 18½x22½ 49 1p rose carmine / gray black. Notes design is 18x22 50 1p carmine / black/ Notes design is 17½x21. I have one that matches this.
SG 1930-44 43 1p carmine and black (die I) 43d carmine and black die II
1933-48 All Die II but frame varies 56 1p carmine and gray 56j 1p brt carmine rose and gray 115 1p gray and magenta rose 18mmx22mm (screened) 135 1p grey-black and carmine 17.5mmx21.5mm (screened)
The Suid-Africa has a more die I look but lines are ragged.
SG set can be done by color (black must be 43/43d)
Oh well after an hour research.
I wonder if there is a better way to understand.

I can sympathise entirely Al, angore , I just bought a S Africa Collection principally for the Cape Triangles and the Mafeking siege stamps therein. However I now have a sizeable collection of S Africa 1920-1950 and haven't had the courage to start sorting yet !!!!! I will of course use SG,and not Scott, though the previous owner seems to have used Michel !

I think these South Africa issues are really interesting, but also very confusing. Here is a chart I put together for my Facebook Group - British Colonies Stamp Collectors Group. Feel free to visit the group if you have a Facebook account. There is a written description on the site if you want more details.
Thanks Admin for fixing the problem. I have a set of charts for each value that can be found by looking at the South Africa Page Scan on my website. I will post the link here, but it might not work. None of the pages are secure. I don't take credit cards or do anything else that requires security on the site.

I posted a link to the image, but it doesn't seem to work. I guess it was too big. Hopefully you can find it on the Facebook site along with all the other values. If not, send me an email from my web site and I will send the link.

The image doesn't appear because the site it is hosted on is not secure (i.e., https). Images linked to Proboards-hosted forums must be secure. I've included a link to the image in the original post.

I amended the list to add these from SG that I did not realize were listed.
115 1p gray and magenta rose 18mmx22mm (screened) 135 1p grey-black and carmine 17.5mmx21.5mm (screened)
For the differences between 18 and 18 1/2. is 18 exact (not rounded down)? I have one that is 18 1/4 or so and not sure if the 18 1/2 is closer to 18 1/2.
After that chat on Evernote (I use OneNote) it has inspired me to get my OneNote more organized using screenshots and webpage extracts like for this issue. Now, I just have to remember that I saved it in OneNote,
