1949 saw the passing of one of the leading Zionists and scholars who immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in the late 19th early 20th centuries. Menashe Meirovitz was the only one of these notables who was still alive at the proclamation of the State of Israel. Designed by W.W.Wind, this issue marks his death at the age of 89. Printed in sheets of 5x5, Perf 11. The three stamps exist with (Brown & Green examples only) and without value so only part set shown. There is also a Light Blue shade (unseen by me until now!)

GOLDA MEIR. Golda Meir became Israel's 5th Prime Minister in March 1969, leading the State until June 1974. Born in Kiev and moved to the USA in 1906 where she settled in Milwaukee. There she became involved with the Labour Zionist movement. In 1920 she moved to what was then Palestine, living on a Kibbutz and proving herself to be a worker, leader as well as a Politician. She was Prime Minister during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. She died in Jerusalem on December 8th 1978. She was the first and (until now) only woman Prime Minister of Israel. She was also only the 4th woman Prime Minister worldwide, and was given the nickname 'Iron Lady'. (One or two other future women leaders were also so-called !) In 1980, the JNF issued sheets to commemorate her life as a leader. Designed by Oswald Adler and printed by the Government Printer. Perf 14x13. Sheet of 12, 4x3 Sheet of 20, 5x4 with Tabs on stamps 16,18 and 20. The image below is from the sheet of 20. All these sheets were surcharged '1 shekel' before being issued. There also exists a Souvenir Sheet of 1 with no surcharge.

I have shown 3 issues from the Teachers' Council including the Adulam and Victory Forest stamps (from page 1). Most stamps from these issues do not show the JNF/KKL inscriptions and the item below goes one step further.....it doesn't show ANY inscription !! I would say that without any wording on the sheet it would be difficult to know what it was at all !! 1959-60 (5720) Children's Forest in the Mountains of Jerusalem. All Teachers' Council issues come with charts as previously stated and the chart for this issue came with spaces for 100 stamps. It was Herzl's 100th Birth Anniversary and his image appears on the chart as well as the inscription ' Year 5720-Herzl Year'. A small folder containing spaces for these stamps was also issued by the JNF in Great Britain for schools there. Sheets of 4x5, no inscriptions. Perf 10½

Russian-born Chaim Nachman Bialik became known as the National Poet even though he passed before the birth of the State. His work, studies and teachings took him from Radi in the Ukraine to Odessa, Berlin and finally Tel Aviv where he became head of the Hebrew Writers' Union and devoted himself to cultural and public affairs. His writings are as popular today in Israel as they were back in the early 20th Century. Many streets are named after him and in Bialik Street in Tel Aviv stands his former home, Bialik House, which is today a Museum and testament to his life and work. The six stamps here were issued upon his death on July 4th, 1934 the design of which is taken from a woodcut by Joseph Budko. Printed by A.B.Press of Tel Aviv in panes of 2x2 for booklets which contained 6 panes, one of each colour. Perf 10½. They can also be found handstamped 2,3,5 or 10 Mils in Violet on each colour. They also exist Imperforate and on thicker paper without gum, making a 'full set' of 42 stamps !!

Some of the first Jewish settlers to Ottoman Palestine were from Russia in 1882. They called themselves 'Bilu', which is an acronym for the Hebrew, 'House of Jacob, come, let us go' (Isaiah 2:5). This is inscribed on the bottom of the stamps. These settlers (Bilu) founded the city of Rishon Le Zion and many other settlements. The stamps were printed in sheets of 8x3 and in panes of 2x3 for Booklets, one pane of each colour to a booklet. Perf 11½. All colours exist with handstamped surcharges of 5,10,20,30 and 40 Mils plus other, slightly more dubious types. I won't even hazard a guess as to how many the full sets consist of !! (I have never seen many of them). They were issued in 1941.

1950. The year marked the 50th Anniversary of Mishmar HaYarden (Guardian of the Jordan), a small village north-east of the town of Zefat near the River Jordan. The Original Moshav was destroyed during the 1948 Arab-Israel War but rebuilt soon after by founding and surviving members. Printed in sheets of 5x5 on watermarked paper, Perf 11. Colours listed as Blue-black, Orange and Black. A light Orange in the unvalued stamp also exists as well as Imperfs. the latter two I have not yet seen.

Below are two issues from 1952 of the same design. The top stamp, which also exists on yellow paper and in a darker shade of blue like the stamp below. They were printed in sheets of 2x5, Perf 10½. They show the first President of Israel Chaim Weizmann and were used on School diplomas. Inscribed "For Torah and Testimony", (Isaiah 8:20). Later that year on November 9th, Weizmann passed away and stocks of the Dark Blue stamps were overprinted in black on the stamp borders/margins.

As we are close to celebrating Tu B'shvat I will show you an example from the New York Office, regular issues. 1944 Am Israel Chai-Tu B'shvat. Issued in sheets of 5x6, Perf 12½. I don't have the sheet yet (I only won it yesterday) but that Perf measurement looks a bit suspicious to me ! The design shows a Green leaf on white background with a tractor in the centre. The top and centre inscription reads,' Am Israel Chai' (The People of Israel Lives) and the bottom 'Israel Lives' in English. It's hard to make out on the sheet so I will put a close-up image here when the item arrives. The stamps exist in both Emerald and Dark Green. Imperforate sheets of 10x12 have been seen but I assume this is how they were printed and before perforating, given the size.

1950 One Million Immigrants. This issue marks the arrival of one Million Immigrants to Israel. Below the Menorah is inscribed 'A million Jews in Israel'. Inscribed around the Menorah,' Ingathering of the Exiles-Hannukah 5710'. The Menorah shown is taken from the relief on the Arch of Titus in Rome. The relief shows the Romans bringing home the spoils after the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. The stamps were designed by F.Krausz and printed in sheets of 5x5 on both watermarked and unwatermarked paper. Perf 11. The stamps also exist without values and Imperforate.

A few odd bits for today. From the New York Office in 1953 for Tu B'shvat (Tree planting) Holiday. A Tree Fund was set up and two stamps were issued in booklets of 5 panes (of 3x2). Perf 12½. Shown here is the Brown stamp with a 10c value. A Green, and Dull Green with 5c value were also issued. 1943 Bialik and Herzl issue. They have both been seen and written about from previous issues. The stamps were issued for schools to be used on certificates and reports. They depict Bialik (left) and Herzl on either side of a small village. They are inscribed 'Torah and Testimony'. Printed by the Hapoel Hatzair Press in Tel Aviv in booklet panes of 2x5, Perf 10½ The stamp shown is in blue with a value of 100 Mils. Stamps in Black (50 Mils) and Dark Blue (150 Mils) also exist. The two lower values are on both watermarked and unwatermarked paper. The stamp below, from 1952, marks the 70th Anniversary of the picturesque town of Zichron Ya'akov. Printed in sheets of 2x5, Perf 10½. Also exists in Blue. It also serves as a reminder of the last time we, as a family, went out together to the town's annual festival, before Covid struck. I hope we can get to the same festival this year.....but it's looking grim !! Last but not least, the 'Declaration of Independence' issue. With and without values in Blue and Brown (on yellowish paper). The Brown has a value of 50 Prutot. The design shows David Ben-Gurion reading the Declaration of Independence on May 14th 1948. This 1949 issue marks the 1st Anniversary of the State of Israel. Printed in sheets of 4x8, Perf 11½.

No post from this topic yesterday mainly due to power outages which left me in the dark, cold and extremely annoyed. But we are back on track today with a special issue. Well, nothing special about it really except that it was this particular issue that had me searching for more JNF labels a long time ago. I think it was my affection for Tractors and I imagined that it was me all those years ago working the fields of............. ........EMEQ JEZREEL. This 1946 issue commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the purchase of land in the Jezreel (Yizreel) Valley for Agricultural use. Also known as the Valley of Megiddo, it had lain bare and uncultivated for centuries until the early 1920's when the JNF began to purchase and settle the land. The stamps were produced in sheets of 4x6 with a central horizontal gutter making two panes (4x3). There are 4 colours: Orange, Blue, Green and Brown. I do not have an example in Orange and to be honest I have rarely seen them which is odd given that it appears to be as common as the other colours according to Rochlin. Time will tell. The Brown (5), Blue (10) and Green (50) exist with values. Additionally, the Brown and Green types can be found handstamped '10 Mils' in black. The Orange and Blue types without values were also produced for booklets in panes of 2x3, 5 panes to a booklet. Perf 10½ for all types. Two other issues exist in this design. From the New York Office there is an issue for the Purim Festival of 1950. 3 types all in blue. Above the design there is an additional printing 'Purim 5710' and also with values of 25c and 50c. From the South Africa Office there was an issue of a single stamp in Blue, the same design but Pin Perf 11. The issue was sponsored by the Yeoville Branch of the Women's Zionist League of Johannesburg. They came in 4 2x3 booklet panes which may or may not be inscribed 'Rosh Hashanah stamp'. The latter two issues I have never seen so I only show a few types from the 1946 Jerusalem Office printings. I have shown this before earlier in the topic (Page 1) but I'll add it here too as it's relevant. Also, I did not know until yesterday that it is actually listed (without the interim overprint). It does not give a value though due to it's scarcity. More next time ! Londonbus1

PITCHAT SHALOM ISSUE. (Peace Salient) When Israel and Egypt made peace in 1979-80, an area of Land in the Negev was set aside to re-house the settlers who left the Sinai. This issue commemorates that event and the stamp shows a tractor moving a settlement in it's loader. The stamp and sheet were designed by Ruth Levin and the work of the Government Printer. Perf 14x13. They were printed in sheets of 5x4 with 'tabs' at positions 16,18 and 20. The example (top) below is from the right of the sheet showing the tab in position 20 16. At a later date the stamps on the remaining stock were surcharged 5 Shekels in Black. Below are two issues, similar to the one above, but issued in the United Kingdom to help the Bsor Region of the Negev, which in part included the area mentioned above. The first issue in 1980 was printed in two different sheets. A sheet of one with one tab and a sheet of 3 with 3 tabs. The latter is shown here but an example of the one-stamp sheet is shown below issued in 1981 to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Jewish National Fund. Both stamp, tab and also the margins are overprinted in Black. The stamps and Tabs are similar to the 'Pitchat Shalom' sheet but with inscriptions in English.

1946. IMMIGRANT SHIP ISSUE. An iconic yet somewhat sad and frustrating image appears on this 1946 issue which also gives rise to some questions that I have been trying to find answers to today. The Sha'ar Yashuv (Yishuv) was (apparently) a large fishing boat that sailed from Brindisi in Italy towards what was then still Mandate Palestine in 1946 (date unknown). According to survivors, the boat was intercepted by the British and taken to Cyprus where Jewish camps were already set up as early as 1936. Most immigration during and after the war years and up until the end of the British Mandate, was illegal. (Google British White Paper) However, most other accounts have the boat as being intercepted and sent to Cyprus in 1947 as can be seen on the memorial wall on the Tel Aviv seafront in London Garden (no close up, sorry. But trust me, it says 1947 !!). It could be that it left late in 1946 and was intercepted in in January '47 but I think it is more likely the ship made an earlier attempt to take Jews to Palestine but failed. Research ongoing, all good fun. The stamps were printed in sheets of 5x2 without values. Colours are Light Green and Dark Green. The former can also be found handstamped 20, 250 or 500 Mils in Violet. Both colours, plus a Greenish Brown type, exist with a value of 10 (Mils). These were produced in sheets of 5x4 also. All are Perf 10½ but can also be found rouletted. The stamps mark this period of illegal immigration to Mandate Palestine. This is the list of ships in English that both failed and succeeded to bring immigrants to Palestine. They include the (in)famous 'Exodus' that became an embarrassment for Britain when it was intercepted with almost 5,000 on board and returned to Germany. The plaques are in English. The Hebrew dedication nearby are on Grey-black stones set in the ground. A sombre yet fascinating garden. I was there with my daughter just before Covid struck !

1945 SECOND RABBI KOOK ISSUE. The stamps here were issued on the 10th Anniversary of his death. 4 colours Black, Blue, Green and Brown with a mulitude of overprints and surcharges. I have shown just one surcharge type below, Type C with '100' in each bottom corner. I can imagine reaching the zenith of a full set would take a lifetime !! Rabbi Abraham Issac HaCohen Kook (1865-1935) was a scholar, writer, Orthodox Zionist and a huge supporter of the Jewish National Fund. He was also the Chief Rabbi of Palestine. Thus he appears on a number of other JNF stamps including one of the same design from a 1938 'Zionist Rabbi's' sheetlet but with different perforation size. The stamps were printed by the HaOman Press of Jerusalem on slightly greyish paper in sheets of 6x8, Perf 11½.

Amusing little correction made to the 'Pitchat Shalom' issue of January 19th. I wrote: "They were printed in sheets of 5x4 with 'tabs' at positions 16,18 and 20. The example (top) below is from the right of the sheet showing the tab in position 20."I was a little hasty as of course one reads from the right here, so the 'tab' I spoke of was in position 16 !! Silly me. I won't make that mistake for today's offering from 1964. The sheet marks the 60th Anniversary of the Teachers' Organization and shows a photograph of the first Hebrew Teachers' Organization Conference. In the front row of the picture are some of the founders, Menachem Ussishkin, David Yellin and Eliezer Ben Yehuda. The stamps are inscribed 'Teachers' Organization' and the sheet selvedge above stamps 1 & 2 ( ) is inscribed '60 Years of the Teachers' Oragnization of Israel". Sheet 5x3, Perf 11.

1945 JEWISH SPORTS ISSUE. Bit of an odd one tonight because although the issue was for three stamps, and two of them in Blue(ish) and Green, the other colour listed is Brown, not red. But there is more ! The Blue is catalogued as having a value of 1 mil, the Brown 5 Mils and the Green 10 Mils which do not match up to those shown here. I will add a couple of those listed when scanned. (Tomorrow) Although Imperfs are known to exist, I believe these may be proofs before a value change. More research needed ! The stamps are inscribed after a quotation from II Samuel 10:12, 'Be of good courage and let us prove strong (for our people)'.Printed in sheets of 8x4 and booklet panes of 8x2 and 2x2. Perf 10½.

Well, I might as well show the item I won today via TWO eBay accounts !! It will be forever etched on my brain when I look at it. So let's start it here. The reality is it was quite a bargain. From the Branch Office of the Jewish National Fund in Poland. Issued in 1917 under the title 'View of the Land', it shows a Plowman and a Horse inside a Star of David with a skyline of Jerusalem in the background. The selvedge is missing sadly but inscribed on it is 'If I forget thee O Jerusalem'. Panes of 2x3 to a 5-pane booklet. Perf 11½. Sad part is, I cannot leave the seller feedback now that the account is finally closed (He says hopefully). But he has been informed. Londonbus1

Today, another item from the Poland Branch Office of the JNF. This was purchased from the same seller as yesterday's eBay fiasco item but on this occasion I managed to win it using just one account !! 1918 Redemption Stamp. The stamp shows a Palm Tree with the sun rising in the background. Inscribed 'Geula titnu la'aretz' (Give Redemption to the Land). Printed in Warsaw by Fenika Printers on April 15th, 1918. Booklet Panes of 3x2. Perf 11½. There are 4 colours in the set in Blue, Turquoise, Dull Purple (shown) and Olive Green. A larger stamp in Blue of the same design was produced in booklet panes of 2x2. Apart from the pane shown, I bid on the others but was up against a whole host of interested collectors ! Most items printed by Branch Offices or New York are scarce and when they come up for auction more than a little luck is needed. So just the one piece of luck on this occasion !!

THE BLUE BOX. For many years, a Blue Box (as it came to be known) was kept and displayed in every Jewish household, office or institution to raise funds for the JNF. The idea was born in 1901 soon after the 5th Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland. Types of the box were used around the world. www.kkl-jnf.org/about-kkl-jnf/the-blue-box/1983-84 (5744) "OUR BOX". This sheet from the Teachers' Council issues of the JNF shows a traditional 'Blue Box'. Printed in sheets of 6x2, Rouletted. As mentioned previously, most of these Teachers' Council issues came together with a chart for use in schools. The chart for this issue included photographs of JNF activities including building roads and planting forests. The spaces for the stamps each contained a poem and there was one space for each of the months of the year,

I just won these two sheets issued from the New York Office in 1978. CHILDREN'S FOREST. Se-Tenant sheets of 10, 2 different designs. The first stamp is inscribed 'Children's Forest' in Hebrew and English. The second stamp is inscribed only in Hebrew, 'Jewish Children's Forest' and '30th Anniversary of the State of Israel'. They could be affixed to a specially prepared Tree Certificate which was produced for this issue. Sheets of 5x2, Perf 12½. The Imperf Sheet is unlisted.

An extra addition today to mark International Holocaust Day. Remembrance day Ceremonies in Israel take place in the Spring. The set of 4 below were issued in 1972 and show the 'Scroll of Fire' monument by Nathan Rapaport which stands in the Martyr's Forest in the Jerusalem Hills. The Forest is dedicated to the Six Million Jews who perished during World War Two. In 1951, Six Million Trees were planted there and the monument shown on the stamps was erected in 1972. There is also a memorial to Anne Frank. Printed in sheets of 4x5, Perf 10½. Full sheets can be found both with and without marginal inscriptions.

The Yatir Project, which began in 1966 was the brainchild of Yosef Weitz whose idea it was to use trees to 'roll back the desert'. The Yatir Forest in the Northern Negev is a place not only of great beauty today but also an environmental success. You can see and read why here: www.kkl-jnf.org/forestry-and-ecology/afforestation-in-israel/turning-the-desert-green/The project was initially sponsored by the South Africa Branch Office in Johannesburg. The stamps, one from Jerusalem and one from South Africa, were issued in sets of 2, the other colour of red & black is still missing from my lot !! Sheets of 4x8 and 4x4. Perf 12½. Designed by Zvi Berger.

CONQUEST OF THE MOUNTAINS. The stamps this time, from 1957 , are inscribed thus. They depict: A worker moving stones. A Bulldozer A Terraced Hillside. The series shows the ways that the Mountains and Hills of Israel can also be cultivated and settled, just like the Plains. Making use of ALL good land. Each stamp exists from more than one sheet type. The first two I mentioned are perf 10½ and the last one is Perf 10,10x10 or 10x10½ ! My feeling is that these were not all issued at the same time. They have a nice atmosphere to them regarding the work ethics of early immigrants to the new State of Israel.

Thank you cursus ! I still have a long, long way to go to catch up with your Catalonia & Barcelona Cinderellas elsewhere. But we will continue. I still have the Blue & Green without values to find yet but this issue is much about a kind of hero of mine. Let me explain. Many years ago as a young boy, my Father took me to the Cinema to see the latest blockbuster, 'Cast a Giant Shadow' starring Kirk Douglas as David 'Mickey' Marcus. I was 9 or 10 I believe, but the story of this hero to the new State of Israel lived long in my memory.....in fact I never forgot. It never crossed my mind that one day I would be living in that new country, walking the Jerusalem road and thinking about the time my Dad took me to see a movie about that great man.......the first General of the Israeli Army. 1949 ROAD TO JERUSALEM. The stamps show a monument built on the Jerusalem Road in memory of David 'Mickey' Marcus who was killed nearby by friendly fire. The stamps are inscribed, "If I forget thee O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its cunning". Marcus was buried at West Point Cemetery, the only American buried there that died fighting for a Foreign Army. The stamps were printed in sheets of 8x4, Perf 11½.

In addition to the previous post, I can also relate this to something exciting that happened to me back in the early 1990's. I was walking the streets of Tel Aviv having had a good fill of Stamp Shops, when I chanced upon a small and very atmospheric old bookshop. You know, the kind that have everything in wood, aisles only big enough for one and creaky old ladders to get to the top shelf. As I recall, I was looking for Philatelic Literature but out of the corner of my eye I spied the title 'Cast a Giant Shadow' and lo and behold it was a story of David Marcus by Ted Borkeman. A quick glance at one of the opening pages made my jaw drop when I see the book had ben signed by Marcus' wife Emma and another family member, possibly one of his kids !! As luck would have it, the book was relatively cheap leading me to believe that the bookshop owner did not know about the writings within !! Sometimes we get lucky. See the images below........

18 Years ago today, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated on it's return to earth with the loss of all crew members. Israel's first astronaut, Ilan Ramon was one of those who perished. We should remember them all. The stamp below is dated 16th January 2003, the Take-Off date, in the selvedge. The issue was a sheet of 5x2, the top row showing the stamp and the bottom row the Tabs which depicted an image of the 7 astronauts. On the tab is a quote from Ramon during his conversation with the Prime Minister whilst in Space, "I call upon every Jew in the world to plant a tree in the Land of Israel". A Sheetlet of 15 with the stamp and Tab in the centre of a composite design type has inscriptions and dates including by Ramon (1954-2003) which leads me to think this was produced after the disaster and not just overprinted. The sheet mentioned above may have been issued earlier to commemorate Israel's 'first man in space'. More information needed. I can only show the stamp & Tab but the sheetlet is very nicely designed and a fitting tribute to them all. (Will try to find an image)
