What I collect: WW, focus on British Empire

Some notes.....
Accomplishments - 2020 was my most active year to date in terms of purchases. I collect British Commonwealth to around 1980 so plenty of inexpensive stamps available. - scanned my entire collection, creating a page numbering system, and now track all page changes (added stamps, new pages) - finally started making pages for my GB Machins (see DIY), The vario page method just did not work for me - added entries to Stamp Manage Inventory software database so I can keep an accurate status of inventory. I have been purchasing too many stamps that I already have. I have submitted almost 10,000 additions to fill in missing country data. I have to keep track of stamps not in the StampManage database that I have purchased to add later to the database.
Goals - more of the same in terms of collecting - organize my reference information better in Microsoft OneNote (similar to Evernote). I end up spending time trying to remember why I decided a particular issue was specific variety such as with Machins and having multiple printers. I have not been saving my work so when I revisit later I forget how I determined what it was. I use ebay and other reference sites for identification isolation and will be saving images with notes. One key part is that online information can be temporary (sites change content or shut down) so information is lost. I remember a roundtable chaired by David Straight on preserving online information back in 1997, Nothing has been done. It seems the historians are more interested in printed material and making it available,. - plan to scan my US collection (mostly dormant) and put pages into protective sleeves.
Observations - COVID accelerated changes that were likely to happen in regards to moving online. Online meetings are nothing new but just required some motivation. Some stamp groups intentionally avoided online prior to this period but were forced to adapt. Now they embrace it as the way of the future.

2020 was a year of buying a new house, moving into it, fixing it, and buying new furniture and freezers (yes, that’s plural). It was an expensive year.
My main goal was to set up my fibre art studio and finish some projects. Covid did interesting things to that plan. By fall all the rug hooking conferences, workshops, and seminar had gone online. I ended up taking classes in September and October. In September I was teaching fabric dyeing workshops as well.
Then November I pulled out my stamp collection again, with the idea of valuing it for dispersal in a new will. I also wanted to get rid of the deadweight in it - the CTOs. And I wanted to sell off my general worldwide collection.
I didn’t sell or give away anything! Instead I realized I had gained a couple of collections this year that needed integrating into my collection before I could see what I had. I am still doing that.
On top of that was the need for new wills, having moved provinces. The lawyer asked if we had any items that needed special dispersal instructions, such as a stamp collection. I mildly panicked. I went home and searched online for inventory software. I landed on StampManage and decided to try it. The rest is history, as they say.
I’ve been organizing and labelling my collection, as well as entering my stamps into StampManage. I’ve written a collection overview and dispersal guide, seeing as no one in the family wants my collection. I’ve been sidetracked into having some fun with my collection, and did research on Canada’s #334, and wrote a short piece on it to be fleshed out with philatelic material as I find it. I rejoined a couple of stamp forums, and several online stamp websites.
What’s in store for 2021? I want to finish integrating the other collections into mine. I want to reorganize my Newfoundland stamps and put them in the album I downloaded from The Stamp Web. I would like to upgrade a couple of binders. I’d like to start selling and giving away the worldwide collection. I want to focus on my worldwide textile/handcraft collection. I’d like to properly sort out and mount the Canada Centennial issues. I want to learn more about stamps and philately.

I am not an enthusiast for making New Year's resolutions but some general goals for my stamp collecting hobby are as follows and I will keep them in mind for 2021:
- I want to remain a worldwide collector but want to focus on one country/collecting area project until I am satisfied I can do no more with it, and move on. I have a tendency to start on small projects but don't complete them, and then leave them on my desk until I am tired of looking at them and clean them off into glassines, incomplete and unfinished.
- Put more items up for sale. I have not only a lot of dupes, but also, a lot of dupes of more desirable items that I know will sell, but I only sporadically put items up for sale and, so, don't sell anything but rarely. I can't sell my stamps if I don't post them up for sale. It is a logical axiom that I can't seem to take to heart.
- Finally get my "new" stamp room/office organized and get the cluttered shelves organized and walk-in closet cleared out and accessible. This will also mean putting other non-stamp items up for sale which has been an ongoing desire of mine and which will allow me to have a larger budget for buying stamps.
- Post more to my FB and Instagram pages.
- Now that I have started putting together videos, try to do something that is more interesting and detailed. Find a niche area of stamp collecting that others are not doing. Possible look at posting videos on Youtube.

2020... made a fair amount of progress getting stamps sorted and placed into Varios. Made more stamp pages (some of which I have since re-redesigned )and increased my reference 'library' what I didn't do was get to the GB penny red stars, although I acquired more 2021- as it has now been proven i can work just as effectively from home, I expect the coming year will see me mainly work from home (which is just fine with me!)- and during the slow moments I can get some stamping done! but come 2021 I hope to: - complete my pages from Great Britain, Queen Victoria issues ( so i can truly know what i need) - make a major dent in plating penny red starts ( goes with the above) - Complete France Sage pages and then focus on the Ceres and Napoleon issues
- Focus my purchasing on higher value stamps I need
- Start liquidating those stamps (study lots) that have been gone through and those retained are mounted
- and maybe, finally let go of the recording equipment and turn the "studio" into a dedicated stamp room
- and last, but not least, stay active on the forum and stay in touch!
Cheers

Not sure about StampManage......I like EZStamp a lot and covers more Countries and lots of Images and tweeks.......I respect each one's choice - 35,000 stamps inventoried in EZ and can change catalogs (works with Scott) and values etc.......let's not get into another thread of discussion here LOL

2020 was a philatelic turning point for me. After thinking about what to collect and how (i.e. what album) for the last several years, I finally reached an epiphany this year. I've settled on the custom dual-page (duplex) design I've shown in the "album page DIY" thread. The first country I started was Albania, which is soon reaching completion. A few of the pages for the WW1 period for those interested: 2021 will be a continuation of this work. I plan to tackle 2-3 countries per year in a similar fashion. Denmark and Greece are due next.

2020 was a year that I am happy to see end! But it was a productive year for my stamps as I finally got busy reducing the scope of my collection by selling some large collections. I also got to know many of you a bit better through posts and zoom meetings.
2021 will hopefully see the rest of the collections sold. Then I plan to leisurely go through the remaining collections one by one, organize, study, update wantlists and sell or trade the duplicates. First up will probably be Finland. As I work on them, I’m going to make an effort to use the proceeds from the sales to purchase those elusive items currently missing from my collections. I’d especially like to add more of the key issues on cover and good examples of classic era cancels.
Beyond stamps, I hope to make some progress on my cookbook. And - a vacation would be awesome!

2020 started off great; I had gotten back into stamp collecting the summer of 2019 and I was buying world-wide by the pound and some of the more expensive US needed to fill in some holes. I was spending 5 or 6 hours every month cleaning aquariums, which brought in about $350 each month (most of that was used on my stamp and music hobby). After the virus hit I was unable to gain access to the fish tanks so my stamp fund was seriously depleted. During the down time I started sorting the 7 pounds of US stamps I purchased back in March.
In 2020 I started cataloging my collection into Colnect and Stamp Mate.
During these last few weeks I've returned to transferring my US stamps to the new albums purchased in 2019.
2021 might very well be when I finish getting things organized...or near completion. Though I doubt it!

In 2020 I decided I had too much stamp stuff. Actually I think it was my wife who decided, but never mind. The cull will begin shortly now that we have entered 2021. It has to. The only consolation, if it even is one, is that I did not add too much to the hoard in 2020 because of the pandemic. No Exhibitions, shows, Stamp fairs or markets; no travelling or meeting stamp buddies. It was a desolate, crumbling kind of year. I lost two good stamp buddies too. In fact 2020 was awful so let's move on............ 2021 will be a year of change. I plan to dispose of a number of collections and concentrate only on a very few. What those few may be should be clear to me in the next day or two. I want to add better items to those collections that remain. I want to go a Stamp exhibition so I do hope the vaccine will help that happen as the year progresses. I'll be getting my first jab tomorrow. Not connected to the hobby but I want to get to the UK to give Mum a send-off she deserves. It is something that has been hanging over me since she passed in May. I want to be re-united with my auction winnings currently lying in wait at the Beryllium Guy abode. I might have to add to it though before the reunion takes place. Now I am off out again to what has increasingly become a very mysterious Shabbat dinner. But I am not suspicious because I know something.............. To TSF members.......May all your plans for 2021 come to fruition. Keep believing, wear the mask and take the vaccine when it comes to you. Buy stamps too !! Londonbus1

First of all, since this is my first post in 2021 Happy new year to all of you. Then I had to find my 2020 list to see if I had reached some of the goals for 2020. 1. No, wingeling all over the place! 2. No, I din't really get into that .... 3. I think I could have done more. 4. Not up to me to decide, but I'm still living with my lovely wife 5. No no no no 1. I have to reduce the 'areas' countries that I collect. I have started to reduce, need to reduce more. 2. Bay less moving boxes with stamps. In 2020 they have got more expensive and they contain less interesting stuff. 3. Bay more quality. 4. Get more control over my collection. This I have started in 2020 and I will continue tat work. 5. Get into regular training. (Need to do this as things are getting out of control)

So my plans from the 2019 thread seem not to have materialised - I'm still working through the 1000s of stamps I have in books and loose trying to create some order, and due to COVID missed out on meeting up with others from the forum for the 2020 London stamp exhibition... So for 2021, I'll reiterate my plans from last year, hopefully with some more luck: "I'd like to complete my initial cataloguing, and start working out what I need to complete my Belgian collection. And I'd love to attend at least one of the bigger London fairs, so might get to meet some of our other compatriots!"

Did we not do this last year ;-) It is like something out of Dinner for One and just like in the film, it is the "same procedure as last year". For myself, 2020 was another year where the ups out-weighed the downs. There was much to be thankful for including the various fun activities, engaging friendships and a number of opportunities that presented themselves within my philatelic circles; broadening both my horizons and outlook. I am fortunate enough to be engaged in a hobby that allows me to be in dual worlds at any given time, such is my imagination :-) In the coming year I will continue to work on the collections shared over the past twelve months here on TSF including the Portuguese Ceres, the Nederlands Veths, my obsession with all things related to Canada's 2¢ Imperial Penny Postage and of course, the passion for Antarctic or Penguin related items remains strong! The plan is to continue developing these collections through my research, writings and mountings (not always necessarily in that order). One of the projects I am most keen on getting underway is incorporating the M/S plate blocks depicting Canada’s train sets or locomotives into my album pages of the Map Stamp & RPO cancels.
Watch this space...
For now though, best wishes to one and to all for a joyful and prosperous new year!
Happy collecting!

2020 has been very different for me than for most here I will gather. I work in Grocery Retail so I never faced any lockdown time, I am an "essential worker". Thankfully I work overnight shifts so my contact with the general public is quite limited. And because of the crazy increase in demand for grocery it's meant I've worked a lot more overtime than normal, so financially 2020 was a good year for me, even before the stimulus checks back in the Spring and just now in December.
Philatelically did a lot of work with Colnect in 2020 - major goal was the reorganization of the catalog so that all postal administrations were easy to find on the main page (previously many "dead countries" had been grouped together in regional groupings based on Colonial owner, which was frustrating for many new users unfamiliar with the history of a given place.)
For my own stamping outside Colnect, I finished reorganization of my Malaysia and Singapore collections as well as Norfolk Island and Australian Antarctica, and have begun work on Canada.
Goals for 2021
Keep working on improving the database in Colnect. In the next month we will cross the 1 million different items level in Colnect, which is a great milestone, but still a lot of material to add. Also keep up with what will likely be a flood of new issues in 2021 as postal administrations that issued fewer stamps in 2020 than previous years look to try and recoup some profits.
Personal philatelic goals are
1) Complete reorganization of Canada collection so that it all housed in Vario Albums 2) Start organization of my Turkey collection so that it is housed in Varios 3) Fill some gaps in my USA, Canada, Malaysia and Australia collections 4) Try to find some of the specialized catalogs I am looking for to add to my collection
3 and 4 will be tempered by the need to continue saving up money as my partner and I are working to buy the house we are currently renting, so have to measure my philatelic purchases to a degree to save up for a downpayment.

Happy collecting! P.S. In my listing of projects for the upcoming year, I was completely remiss in omitting the thematic collection of art and artist on stamps. It was my receiving a packet of such themed postage stamps as part of a Christmas greeting that reminded me,
The stamps, depicting many time periods and genres, are a welcome addition to the collection especially the French issue with its depiction of a Bernard Buffet work who is a favourite of mine. In 2021, I look forward to creating album pages based on individual artists or galleries such as this one that was completed last year - The National Gallery of London - A Virtual Visit
Do it for yourself...
Happy collecting!

2020 was a difficult year for me:
- I have moved from Texas to France - Adapt to France. I’ve been living in Houston, which is a big town, and now I’m living in a much smaller one, so it took quite sometimes to adapt to it. - I don’t speak French very well thus I have a hard time fitting in at school. - I started to collecting stamps which is quite interesting. - I learned to play Ukulele. - I have read quite a lot of books and actively improving my French
2021: - Learn more on collecting stamps! Developing some experience. - Keep up with school and try to speak more fluent French. - Continue to read. - Stay alive and continue to be calm with my mom. She’s really strict and it’s tough. - Keep up with instruments.

For me:
2020
Mother in law passed away in September (cancer); got to have a family Zoom meeting about a week before) Paid off a car loan; was paying on two at once (had to buy new to me car in late 2019)--that hurt. Began working from home mid-March and have been home since Bought a couple of new monitors for work Changed internet companies Grew first my mustache back, and now a full beard (too much white in it, though lol) Purchased new Scott 2021 pages (and all of Volume 3) Updated values in inventory to 2021 Scott, that was painful, with a few exceptions Bought a LOT of stamps online including collections from Trinidad & Tobago as well as Australian Antarctic Territory Did a lot of trading Bought a pocket microscope to help with details such as the inverted Denmark/DWI early stamps Rejoined Scandinavian Collectors' Club Bought a standing desk converter (which I have not set up yet)
2021
Paying down some old debt Bought a new L shaped desk (Wayfair will be helping me set that up and then I will put the standing desk converter on top) Have some home projects/purchases planned Bought a T3 Signoscope for watermark detection Plan to do a full inventory audit comparing albums to my Excel workbook (2 out of 33 collecting areas done, some changes already) Will be more targeted in my stamp buying; finally got a Hong Kong 239-244 MNH set at a decent price. Looking to change positions at work
