As nothing seems dedicated to this , I thought I'd start a new thread. Below is my first page (latter 1922) the first preoblitres were Sage series beginning in 1893. The Sage stamps command an impressive price and I suspect forgeries are not that uncommon. I think the same may be true with some of the later issues, as the earlier issues... well some will take time (and saving) to acquire. 1920 to 1922(early)issues all had a text overprint POSTES or POSTES PARIS FRANCE Year Year and were all Sower issues (16 in total) Latter 1922 , consist of five Sower, one 1 ligneé and 4 semeuse and 1 (and the only one) Merson. If anyone has dupes,(or has no interest) PM me (and I have a number of dupes).... and from this page, the 35c Violet needs a better example!

Just giving this thread a bump, as I moved Xavier's ( hrdoktorx ) earlier post over to this subject-specific thread at his request. They are beautiful stamps, my friend, and I am glad to see that you have added them to your collection. I also seem to recall that you got a couple of these "Semeuse" dated pre-cancels from Pascal, the dealer that I used to buy from regularly in Aix. No rush at all, but when you have time, will you favor us with a post of your current collection of these, including the latest acquisitions? I like these very much, despite the fact that I have not dedicated any effort to them at all!

Well, since it's asked so nicely, I'll be happy to show what I've got. So, with the two newcomers already shown, I have in total 7 of the 15 issues with "POSTES PARIS" or "POSTES FRANCE" and "1920" to "1922" overprints. These are catalogued in Yvert & Tellier as PO24 to 38. The ones I can show are: Top row: PO25. Middle row: PO26, PO33, & PO29. Bottom row: PO30, PO36, & PO32. Over the next days, I'll proceed with many others from later issues.

The next set of French pre-cancels is using the "Blanc" allegory type, with the partially circular overprint "AFFRANCHts POSTES" (Affranchissements = frankings) which will be used for several decades. Note that there are two types of such overprints. The first type, on the three stamps to the left, has sharper letters and a blacker ink, while the second type, on the two stamps on the right, is less well defined and the ink is not as shiny. Some (but not all) stamps exist with both overprint types. Here we have Cérès numbers 39, 40, 41A, 42 and 43.

The lone Merson type pre-cancel, already shown in the introductory post, but let's give it more room (Céres #44):

The most prolific pre-cancel type is the "Sower on plain background". Here are my holdings, unfortunately only partial. We have: First row: Cérès numbers 50, 51, 52, 53, 53B Second row: 55, 56, 57 Third row: 61, 63, 64 The block of four is #54A.

As you know, Maury does not use the same system of #s and calls them Semeuse lignée or camée (the last ones shown) and the English call them "Sower" - In Maury they appear on Page 685 in the pré-oblitérés (pre-cancels) All in all, the Lady has been the subject of so many stamps in France I will not comment further as I love them and have some pre-cancels also. Thanks for showing, Xavier too !! Now SCOTT regular or Specialized does not consider these stamps - I am not surprised René

The next set is from the "Peace" allegory series. There are nine stamps, of which I hold seven (Cérès #70-74 and 76-77), shown below. I am missing the 30c green (#69, very high CV) and the 80c orange (#75, not cheap, but within reach, so we'll work on it!):

Next is the Mercure set, spanning the occupation years as can be seen for the second 40c purple issue being labelled with "Postes Françaises" instead of "République Française". These are Cérès #78-83.

These are Cérès #78-83. I had a few pre-cancels, Xavier and racatrien, but when I did he inventory with Scott/Maury I could not find anything in Scott so I just forgot about these nice France stamps and thanks for reviving my interest - Now I have to contact my Sacramento friend stainlessb (Stan) to check if he has any dups to get me going........ During the Occupation, new pre-cancels were drawn from the set of Pétain definitives. Three stamps were issued (Cérès #84-86):
