Well done to find that. A fantastic card JeffS, a rare item indeed. Very limited mail exists into land lockedBasutoland in the 1890s. There were only a handful of Europeans in the country at that time

I have a good friend here in Aberdeen who collects Basutoland . He is quite envious and would be more than happy to pay the pencil price of "R 130", SA Rand for it ( Since that is £6.50 or a bit over $8 I guess you had to pay a bit more !)

vikingeck Here is a second card to Basutoland from my card collection:
It has since been cleaned up with hinge remnants removed and pencil annotations erased. Note that the Basutoland postmark was erroneously identified as Mafeking.

A new Orange River Colony card arrived today,
Posted at BLOEMFONTEIN, addressed to MORIJA BASUTOLAND October 6 1901 NPR censor handstamp of Major N. P. Richards, chief censor.
Message relates that her sister is expecting a baby in 2 months, and that her sister's husband and driver were murdered and bodies not found for 5-6 days.
Adds that "Nobody knows the murderer but a friend says it were no boer," all in a rather detached tone.
EDIT: The partial transit mark ...ASE... is most likely MASERU BASUTOLAND, the capitol city.

This spring brought an example of the first bordered Borckenhagen post card, thus Setting 1, Die 1. (no flags L & R) A likely dispatch postmark is lightly struck over the coat of arms. Addressed to Port Elizabeth with an unreadable (to me) transit on the message side. Card is dated June 8 1889. I am told this once graced the collections of mssrs Raay, Broekman and Bezeidenhout, names unfamiliar to me as I am new to this area. I guess I'm in good company?
Tim Bartshe in his exhibit mentions that there are 9 used cards extant. I understand this number has grown considerably since.

One Penny De La Rue card to Germany, 1900.
Posted at SENEKAL March 2, through BLOEMFONTEIN March 3, onward through PRETORIA, Z.A.R. (SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLIC) date not clear. Received at OELS GERMANY April 13
Significant postmark is the oval POSTMASTER GENERAL marking used as a censor handstamp at Bloemfontein.
The handwritten message in English to Germany is unusual and one can see evidence of word translations in pencil in the message.
The line "There are thousands of those bloodthirsty & landgrabbers (meaning the English) in South Africa." is notable to the times. The Boer War is now nearly 5 months underway.

New in today's mail:
1-penny De La Rue card posted from the Cape to Bloemfontein, charged 1-penny due as the card had no postal validity used from outside the Orange Free State.
