As the thread title states - this thread is to highlight 'SON' cancels on New Zealand stamps.
Due their visual beauty (and this is a visual hobby) I have decided to start a - Socked on the Nose or SON cancellations thread.
My criteria for these is to show any stamp that has a complete strike of a particular cancellation - with the stamp being in fine condition - ie lets keep the quality up on this thread.
New Zealands 'A' class or 'coin' CDS postmarks are ideal for this. Lets make it a rule that the strike is as near to 100% on the stamp (a single stamp) as possible. 95% or more only please!
NO slogan postmarks or damaged items here please. A thread of visual delight ('eye candy') is what I am after :-)
I will start, as this item made me think of starting the thread, with this item - an 1898 Pictorial, SG 250, 2½d blue - inscribed 'Wakatipu'
As the postmark is of 'Coromandel' I have also included it in the 'Thames and Coromandel' thread started by Mark skid

Here is the best one I have on my Chalons. Looks like a duplex. (95% CDS on the first, 95% C obliterator on the second, obliterator covering part of CDS, prefs cut on the bottom, but this is a Chalon. I hope that fits the quality rules)

Lovely pair of SG35 there Grant. 'Eye Candy' for sure.
However, a SON postmark under my stated criteria is for a single postmark per single stamp. About 95-100% complete on that one stamp. Just a single postmark.
With that said that is certainly a beauty.

and a few on some later issues not usually shown here. A couple of them on the 2nd row are of the 'H' class or 'English' type of double ring cancellations :

A few more modern ones - 1980's to early 2000's. Very hard to get SONs in this period genuinely cancelled. If its not a horrible machine slogan cancel or a wavy line then it is totally devoid of a postmark whatsoever ! Present day you are lucky to get any kind of a postmark of any kind.
However, these days if there is any form of a postal cancel then the whole cover is kept intact. Single Commercial usage envelopes seems to be the modern way to collect modern stamps.

Hi Guys I'm trying to find some of my Chalon SON cancels, but not many fit the standard required However hopefully this one does. It is a pair of SG130b on cover. The stamp is rare enough let alone on cover. So hopefully people will appreciate this. Cheers Grant

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50
I decided to check out my New Zealand collection to see if I had any nice SON’s and the best I could come up with was this New Plymouth on piece dated May 13 1898 not long after the set was issued. I especially like that the stamp has the Wakitipu miss-spelling.
