Ah yes, the Art Canada collection - although I'm not a specific "Art" collector, as a Canadian Stamps collector, I always enjoy adding those, with their distinctive gold and silver frames, to my collection.

In April, USPS issued a set of five stamps to honor the work of Ojibwe artist George Morrison (1919-2000). I didn't know much about him before this year, but I enjoyed learning about his highly individual approach to art, his graduation from early abstract expressionism to a kind of abstract landscape painting, and his life story. The works chosen for these stamps range from 1949 to 1995, and they show how much Morrison was able to get out of a horizon line. They're beautiful stamps, and this was a very good choice by USPS if you ask me. Here's the pane of stamps, along with a FDC I made for Morrison's "Lake Superior Landscape" (1981).

Not what I would call great art. Just some paint splashed on the canvas!

I've been experimenting recently with collage-based cover designs. This one is an add-on that I made for the 1962 Winslow Homer stamp (Sc 1207), one of my favorite U.S. issues of that era. It's a common issue, so it was easy to track down an uncacheted FDC on eBay for less than $2. I made the cachet by carefully cutting out an image and text from a recent mailing promoting the Metropolitan Museum of Art's current Winslow Homer exhibit. I suspect this kind of thing might be sacrilege to some, but I was pleased with how neatly and harmoniously the elements all fit together, and now I've got a unique FDC for my collection. All that's left is making it over to the Met to see the exhibit before it closes later this summer!
