Five stamps honoring the centennial of Pop Art pioneer Roy Lichtenstein were issued earlier this week in New York. I was able to attend the First Day of Issue ceremony at the Whitney Museum of American Art and service a few covers, including this one, which I sent back to myself through the mailstream. The faint but legible spray cancel shows that it really did see use on the first day (matching the pictorial postmark, which is too smudged to read). I really love these stamps, and it's nice to have a memento from the day!

Sheikh Mohammed Sultan (1923-1994)
His paintings mainly depicted bengali peasants, giving them an exaggerate muscular physique, symbolizing the power of the people, who are the core of Bengal.

My fun with Roy Lichtenstein continues with these two maximum cards that I made using postcards of his work. I tried to select artworks that thematically echoed the stamps: The first card features his sculpture "Picture and Pitcher" (1977), the second one shows his screenprint "Finger Pointing" (1973).

The Roy Lichtenstein stamps are some of my favorites issued this year, so I've been having fun making covers, as you can see upthread. Here are three more that just came back to me: 1. A printed cachet using a photo I took of Lichtenstein’s mural at the Times Square subway station (one of my favorite pieces of public art in New York). 2. A combo with two other stamps with modern art themes: Sc. 3652 (Andy Warhol) and Sc. 1259 (featuring artwork by Stuart Davis). The controversy that 1259 saw as the first US stamp to feature a work of abstract art is fascinating to think about today, nearly 60 years later. 3. The last one is actually an original cachet by my seven-year-old son, who had the idea of drawing a first day cover in Lichtenstein’s style. I am a proud philatelic dad! This is it for me with these issues... until I think of another cachet idea!

Here are two FDCs I recently picked up for Scott 3183d, from the “Celebrate the Century” set that USPS issued in 1998-2000. This stamp shows the 1913 Armory Show, where many Americans got to see Cubism for the first time, and were suitably shocked and scandalized. I particularly like the first one, which is a combo cover with Scott 1259 — one of my favorite stamps, as readers of this thread know, and a nicely concordant choice for this one.

I mentioned recently on another thread that I had found three of the five Roy Lichtenstein stamps on my incoming mail. Well, I didn't have long to wait for the other two - as I belatedly sorted through a large pile of envelopes that I'd put aside for later review, I found the two I was missing! Here are nicely canceled examples of all five. Happy to have completed this set of my favorite setenants of the year.
