In 1973 the government of the GDR decided to build a national monument, commemorating the 500th birth anniversary of Thomas Müntzer (1489-1525),a leader in the peasants-war during the 16th century. In 1976 Werner Tübke (1929 - 2004) accepted the order, under the condition of full artistic freedom. After seven years of preparations,he started painting in 1983.Assisted by about a dozen other painters, the work was completed in less than five years. The official inauguration of the museum-complex,housing the painting was in September 1989,just about a year, before the GDR ceased to exist.
On Aug.22nd,1989 The Deutsche Post of the GDR issued a set of five stamps for the occasion.
The panoramic painting has a size of 14 by 123 meters. The canvas was woven in a single piece in the USSR, as there was no machinery available to do the job in the GDR.
Other than the GDR leadership had intended,Tübke did not paint in the style of Socialist Realism, but,as he called it, Magic Realism. He took his inspiration from renaissance-painters,namely from Lucas Cranch the older and Hyronimus Bosch.
Dürer,Luther and Cranch d.Ä.,amongst others are seen on this stamp, standing at the well of life.
Müntzer,in view of his fall.
The monument/museum,now run by an art-society,sponsored by the state of Thuringia,is located in Bad Frankenhausen.

This colorful 1974 stamp for Expo '74, designed by pop artist Peter Max (Scott 1527), was one of my favorites as a kid. I was happy to find this plate block in my old shoebox, only a little worse for wear (that crease in the upper right probably wasn't there when I put it in the box 25 or 30 years ago). It's still one of my favorite designs. I also found some Artcraft/AFDCS covers for this stamp, marking what it says was the 50th anniversary of FDC collecting. That would put the 100th anniversary next fall! I wonder if any festivities will be planned.

Yes,I agree ! About half a kilometer from here is one of the best museums of modern art in Germany, the Folkwang Museum. The entrance to the collection is free, except for special exhibitions, like the great Paul Gaugin exhibition in 1998.
