I'm fond of the Performing Arts series that USPS ran in the late Seventies through the late Eighties. These two Old Hollywood stars turned up on two different envelopes for me recently - must be something in the air. W.C. Fields, Scott 1803, from 1980; and Douglas Fairbanks, Scott 2088, from 1984. There are some really nice ones in the rest of the series; I might have to start a new mini-collection and try to find them. I didn't see an existing thread where these would fit; others can feel free to post any other stamps with images from stage and screen here, whether or not they're from this USPS series! There are lots of chintzy pop-culture stamps out there, but I really like the ones that are done well.

Three more used examples from this series! Scott 1756, from 1978, honors prolific Broadway composer George M. Cohan. I loved watching Yankee Doodle Dandy, the movie of his life starring James Cagney, as a kid. Scott 2211, from 1986, honors the great jazz legend Duke Ellington. The format of the series had changed by this time, filling more of the frame with the portrait. Really great design on this one. Lastly we’ve got Scott 2550, from 1991, with a tribute to Cole Porter. I can’t tell if any one of his many witty compositions in particular is meant to be represented by the sheet music in the background, but I’m humming "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," "You're the Top," and "Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love" as I post this.

This German stamp was issued in 2007 on the occasion of the stage and film actor Paul Klinger (1907 - 1971)'s birth centenary. It's based on the poster to the 1956 film Hengst Maestoso Austria.

In 2021, France issued a stamp to commemorate the centenary of the release of Charlie Chaplin's comedy-drama film The Kid (1921).
Chaplin's native Great Britain has hitherto issued to stamps of him. Here is the one issued in 1999 as part of the 'Millennium Series 6 - The Entertainers' Tale': The other three stamps feature Freddie Mercury (lead singer of Queen), Bobby Moore with World Cup, and Dalek from Dr. Who.

Besides those from Great Britain, Harry Potter (the movie)'s stamps from other countries abound. Here are some of them in my collection: (1) France, 2007
3 stamp designs in a set of 10 stamps: (2-3) Taiwan, 2004
2 sets of stamps commemorating the release of the 3rd film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). Each set comes with 6 stamps: (4-5) Taiwan, 2005
2 sets of stamps commemorating the release of the 4rd film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). Each set comes with 6 stamps: In my youth I have also purchased Harry Potter's stamps from Australia, but I don't remember where I put them ...

Great Britain's Royal Mail issued in 2020 2 sets of stamps, totalling in 10 new stamps, to celebrate James Bond film franchise and the release of the 25th Bond film, No Time To Die. The stamps in the first set feature 6 of James Bond films: Casino Royale (Daniel Craig, 2006); GoldenEye (Pierce Brosnan, 1995); The Living Daylights (Timothy Dalton, 1987); Live And Let Die (Roger Moore, 1973); On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (George Lazenby, 1969); and Goldfinger (Sean Connery, 1964). The stamps in the second set celebrate some of Q Branch’s vehicles and the films they appear in: the Lotus Esprit S1 Submarine from The Spy Who Loved Me (1977); Little Nellie, the autogyro from You Only Live Twice (1967); the Bell-Textron Jet Pack from Thunderball (1965); and the Aston Martin DB5 from Skyfall (2012).

Performing Arts refers to art that is performed before an audience such as drama, dance or music. It does not include Cinema. W. C. Fields performed in Vaudeville, Douglas Fairbanks appeared in Theatre and so qualify as Performing Artists on those counts. Perhaps Cinema and TV could be spun off into their own thread or the title expanded to include Cinema and TV?

Depending upon the definition chosen, one might argue that performing arts could include cinema and television.

It's a fair point, daniel. USPS skirted this question by largely choosing entertainers who began their careers on the stage before launching very celebrated second acts on the big screen — like Fields and Fairbanks, along with the Barrymore family, Will Rogers, etc. - for the series that this thread was named after. I suspect the distinction was lost on many. I'll update the name of this thread for clarity!

Issued in 1999, Canada's "The Millennium Collection" consists of 68 specially designed stamps as a series of 17 souvenir sheets, one of the them centers around the theme of Canadian Entertainment. One of the stamps in this sheet of 4 stamps depicts the world's largest contemporary circus producer, Cirque du Soleil. Despite an eventful period of two years during which Cirque du Soleil filed in 2020 for bankruptcy protection due to the pandemic, the company has just recently resumed its shows and its iconic yellow/blue tent became white/gray. P.S. I think circus art fits into the definition of performing arts, hence my sharing this stamp in this thread.

One of the souvenir sheets in Canada's "The Millennium Collection" is called "Canada's Cultural Fabric". Of the 4 stamps it contains one celebrates Halifax's Neptune Theatre, a professional theatre company that performs new and classical plays; and one celebrates Ontario's Stratford Festival that specialises in showcasing the works of William Shakespeare. Another sheets, "Fostering Canadian Talent", includes 4 stamps showcasing 4 art/culture related institutions, two of them I think fit this thread. The first celebrates National Film Board (NFB, or ONF in French), Canada's public film and digital media producer and distributor who has funded since its inception numerous Canadian films, documentaries, and animations. The second celebrates Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) for its contributions to radio and television networks. In 2014, Post Canada issued a set of 5 stamps to commemorate the 75th anniversary of NFB / ONF, which showcase: (1) Cynthia Scott’s Flamenco at 5:15 (1983); (2) Gerald Potterton's The Railrodder (1965); (3) Claude Jutra’s Mon oncle Antoine (1971); (4) John Weldon’s animated Log Driver’s Waltz (1979); (5) Norman McLaren’s Neighbours (1952); Fun fact: NFB / ONF's headquarter in Montreal has since 2019 moved to Ilot Balmoral in Montreal's Quartier des spectacles where annuel music shows and festivals are held, sharing the same building with my alma mater NAD-UQAC.

In 2006 and 2008, Canada Post issued two sets of 4 stamps celebrating the achievements of Canadians in Hollywood. The first series of stamps features John Candy (1950-1994), Fay Wray (1907 - 2004), Lorne Greene (1915 - 1987) and Mary Pickford (1892 - 1979). The second series of stamps feature Marie Dressler (1868 - 1934), Raymond Burr (1917 - 1993), Norma Shearer (1902 - 1983), and Chief Dan George (1899 - 1981).

A few months after Christopher Plummer (1929 - 2021) passed away in 2021, Canada Post issued a commemorative stamp to pay tribute to him. This is in fact a project that started in around 2019, and Plummer is said to have participated since the very onset in selecting the stamp design, which features 5 of his most notable on-stage and on-screen roles: Prospero in The Tempest (2010), King Lear in King Lear (2002), Rudyard Kipling in The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965), and John Barrymore in Barrymore (1996). Stamps are available as a set of 10 self-adhesive stamps and a pane of 6 stamps.
