I am hoping someone with the knowledge of post marks can let me know about the PO on this cancel, and if it is in fact on Mafia Island. The Stamp is Watermarked large star, so at least it has that going for it.

Thanks for your post, Roy ( sudbury12000). It’s another interesting stamp! Thanks to JeffS for your link, too, which I found helpful. I did a quick web search, and it seems that stamps of India were overprinted for use on Mafia Island, part of Tanganyika. I noted, however, that the hand-stamped overprints for Mafia Island are supposed to be on stamps of India that were already overprinted I.E.F. (India Expeditionary Force), which seems to be missing from your copy. So, I am not sure if your stamp would end up being a rarity or a forgery. I agree that the underlying stamp appears genuine, it is the inverted Mafia overprint that is the question. Hope this helps.

I just noticed something else on this.
The postmark looks like Kalbadevi, Bombay (Mumbai) on 19-Feb-1926.
Considering that the overprints were done in 1915, and that the stamp was not canceled in Tanganyika, I am becoming suspicious.
Does anyone have experience with these to know if these observations hold any merit?

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Having never seen or heard of these overprints it of course had me also searching the web. Here is another link and I suspect the last sentence says a lot. www.sandafayre.com/News/Mafia-Island-Overprints/?i=172 From my 20 year old Scott catalogues it does not appear they have assigned them a number.
