What I collect: Japan 1890s -2012

My Japan collection which is having a reinasance, is going to be from start to around 2009 or so. I would like to get an older Scott Catalog but not sure what date to select. I know they changed the format and coverage several times. I do have the other Sakura Catalog from around 2016 or so, but would like to get the Scott as well as i Use the Scott Albums and they have reference numbers in them. So any suggestions of what year to get would be most appreicfated. I then will have to watch for them at auction but knowing what may be best will help a lot.
Thanks in advance.

If you just want Japan, you can buy the Scott pages (extracts) at this website. He has the 2020 pages for $28 (Cat 4A pages 19-230) www.scottcataloguepages.com/(

I like the idea of just buying the pages for Japan if that is the only country that you will collect. Books are very bulky and take up a lot of room on the stamp desk Pages can be stapled and folded much more easily and will take up a lot less room. When I first started out collecting a year or two ago, I purchased a 2006 Scott Catalogue set. I discovered that this was the first year that the catalogue was published with color photos of the stamps. I also discovered that they had an issue with publishing and had to print a special set of pages for the US in 2006 to make up for what they forgot. If color images are important to you get a 2006 or newer catalogue.

I had put mine in protective sleeves and you can easily scan/OCR them too so they are searchable.

I do not consider the Scott catalog to be a specialist catalog.

Hi and thanks, Well i do find the Sakura Catalog confusing as it is not chronological. I am hoping the Scott is because it gets hard to find things when you have to look thru the entire book for a new stamp.
I did find Scott's speciality vol 4 which has Japan. I am hoping that may be what works for me as a suppliment to Sakura. I understand it is in color now as well.

Another option would be the online catalogue Colnect colnect.com/en/stamps/years/country/108-JapanThe catalogue is a Wiki where information from all the major catalogue publishers is synthesized together. Listings include catalogue numbers for most items from Scott, Michel, Gibbons, Yvert and Sakura, as well as technical details of each stamp listed and images. As it is based on the wiki principle it is not 100% complete, as all information is contributed by volunteer users, but with over 14000 items listed for Japan, it is a good reference for most issues, especially modern issues, and more is as contributors add missing items. As Colnect is basically a reference catalogue for identification, it does not provide valuation. Basic reference use is free

Reference - I question Myself, it has been a great source to buy some stamps. However, varieties are not well documented and since most cats do not do a good job, how do you expect Colnect to do better ?? When buying, I would appreciate having a Cat # or Cat #s so I am able to compare to my inventory - Does not do that presently, after 4 orders....more details for the buyer Thanks !! René

René For most post-1945 commemoratives of most postal administrations, Colnect is fairly complete in terms of the data, so I think for most common stamps it is fair to say it is a good reference as well (with ability to create inventories an additional benefit beyond the original purpose, which was to be a trading platform for collectors) Varieties come as contributors contribute, the reality is most collectors who use Colnect do not help contribute missing items, and most also only have the mainstream catalogues, very very few have specialized catalogues. But missing items are added to the catalogue everyday so the gaps continue to be filled in as quickly as they are received for processing. That in the end is the limitation to any Wiki based reference. Re catalogue numbers visible when buying, perhaps post a thread in the suggestions forum at Colnect to see what others in the user community think of the idea.

Hi guys and thanks for the posts renden , angore , and pattib and djcmh and . I am NOT going to collect the latest for Japan my plan is to stop around 2008 or so. There are just too many issues in more recent years, and as I am aiming for a fairly complete collection and mint when possible, i will have plenty to do. thanks again for the suggestions. I did sign up for Colnect and was aware it is largely a way to keep track of our own collections, it will be fun but i have a long way to go before i am ready for that, as i have 2 older Scott Japan albums I was able to purchase with a lot of good stamps in them and will need to first work to combine them and then add new purchase. So step by step. but I always appreciate input.
as far as the "latest" specialty for Japan, well they are not cumulative, they issue the new pages year by year so i still have to fill in all that i need by the year. So it will take some time before i get all of the pages i need, i am on a budget so that i am being reasonable in terms of investment and time needed. Chris
