What I collect: Japan 1890s -2012

I have been away from the stamp world for a long time. Even in daily life i didnt think much about the "new" self adhesive stamps that are common. But i see many of the Japanese Stamps i have collected since the Showa Era have no mastic, or whatever the adhesive on the back is called technically...so how are those new stamps prepared for collectiion? they are not, I assume steamed off as we used to do long ago? they seem flawless and in good shape. Often listed as Fine. tho cancelled of course many are.
info on this would be welcome
thanks

I just cut closely around them, leaving them attached to the paper.

thanks Zipper, appreciate the reply. I guess i am puzzled by the majority of stamps i buy from recent years for there is no paper attached and the perforations are complete so there is nothing on the back at all...so where did that adhesive material go? I am wondering if they are treated somehow or issued that way? is a puzzle.

I collect a lot of definitives and I would say the accepted standard now a days is just to trim the paper as close as possible to the perfs. This may change the mount but usually you can't even tell.

thanks Mr. H, much appreciate the info. it explained it well
the products mentioned to float the adhesive off are:
Water Paint remover De-Solv-it - Sticky Stuff remover. UK made. goo gone zep
i used Goo Gone on the back cover of an old scott Japan Specialty album, someone had dripped glue or something on it and had then tried to remove it and left an eternally sticky spot. The Goo Gone removed some of it but smelled aweful the citrus smell they used was abominable and it took days of using coutner top cleaner of various kinds to remove the smell. i wont be using Goo gone and hopefull never have to remove the sticky from stamps as i have no correpondents from Japan to send me letters. but thanks now i understand.

I leave it on a paper fragment, cutting it out a little around. If it's on the cover I leave it as it is.

Mint self-adhesives can be collected on theirs backing-papers. For few of the early s.a.-issues of Germany (2000,2001) it is recommended to remove the "gum",as it is not stable and spoils the stamps after a while.
Used stamps are a different matter. They are difficult to remove for some countries and should be collected on paper, but for others, like Germany there are no problems to wash them off. They just need a little more time in the water-bath,than stamps with water-activated gum.

thanks again salentin, rex, and jpotx113 and others earlier and for the replies. As i plan to hold at 2012 or so for my collecting I may not have to worry as much about self adhesive. The dealers i am working with are able to provide me with either Mint NH or fine quality so I am hopeful to have a good quality collection overall. thanks again Chris

I collect some self adhesives from Canada. In the quarterly packs (and Annual as well) they have die-cut versions. No messy paper to worry about. They are thicker due to the backing cut to the shape of the perforated stamp. But if I am collecting that stamp, I buy a quarterly pack to get these versions.
