The 'Dijever' cartoon funnies appeared in 'The Weekly Whizzer' which was part of the St.Louis-Dispatch of the 1930's. I did not find any other source of the cartoons, only from the Newspaper. There's a nice Stamp-related one here too !! On the image below you will see a letter 'box' !! So I'll be off to search for more Whatsits and Dijevers.........they are such great oldies !! Londonbus1..........Like me ! (except the great part)

In answer to a post almost 6 years ago, here is the complete sheet, via 3 scans, of the THIS IS AMERICA series. The legends down the sides read, on the left: 'WE HAVE ROOM IN THIS COUNTRY FOR BUT ONE FLAG, THE STAR AND STRIPES--WE HAVE ROOM FOR BUT ONE LOYALTY, LOYALTY TO THE UNiTED STATES' --Theodore Roosevelt and on the right 'THANK GOD!------I ALSO----AM AN AMERICAN.' This New York landmarks series was produced by Underwood & Underwood. They were a New York based company producing and selling stereoscopic and other photographic images from 1881 to the 1940s. They feature black and white photographs that have been hand-coloured. Scan_20200528 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr

This is another series based on hand-coloured photographs but less successfully done. They were published in 1937/1938 by the Pictorial Stamp Syndicate of Chicago/Gregor Melikov who produced many poster stamp designs in this era. It seems that they were promoted through local newspapers and there was a competition to collect as many as possible. This series, consisting of 200 stamps, was called Around the World: Famous Sights, Scenes and Wonders of the World. An album was available for the set and the stamps are identified therein. I can access the first page of the index and I am able to identify the first 99 if required. The quality of the colouring leaves much to be desired, at least in these examples and some of them defy purely visual identification. I've made some corrections to the story behind these Around the World stamps. I discovered that on another forum, it was stated that a newspaper was responsible for these poster stamps with some evidence of a text stamp supporting this. However, having found the album online, it is quite clear that the Pictorial Stamp Syndicate published them but Gregor Melikov is likely to be the publisher rather than the designer. They were then promoted through various daily newspapers with a competition to see who could collect the most.

Here is a sheet of stamps produced by Leicester Hemingway (the younger brother of Ernest Hemingway) who founded the micronation of New Atlantis in 1964. It actually consisted of 2 rafts close to Jamaica and his intention was to get money from the US Government under the 1856 Guano Islands Act to support oceanographic research but this was unsuccessful. This stamp honours the then US President and a similar stamp in red honours the Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. Several other stamps were produced. Unfortunately, the rafts were destroyed by a storm in 1966. Leicester Hemingway came to a sad end in 1982. New Atlantis sheet 001 by Daniel, on Flickr

The Watergate Conspiracy of 1972 was one of America's biggest political scandals involving the then President, Richard M Nixon after a burglary at the Watergate Office Building in Washington, DC. I won't go into details here, they are well known or you can check out Wikipedia. It culminated in Nixon's resignation and pardon by president Gerald Ford. Many of Nixon's staff were convicted for their involvement. These Lest We Forget Watergate Commemoratives were produced by artist Peter Martin in 1974 and consisted of 3 different sheets. One complete sheet is shown here along with 8 other single stamps. Scan_20200805 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20200805 (3) by Daniel, on Flickr

Couldn't quite decide where to place this one. Block of Control stamps from 'The Philatelic Society' ? I have not been able to find much out up to now. Looks like a J.W. Scott sales department item. Anyone ? (To save me pulling my hair out later)

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK. An event which started in 1962 when President Kennedy signed a proclamation stating that the week either side of May 15th (Peace Officers Memorial Day) will be known as National Police Week. Until today it is a big event in the USA, particularly Washington DC. There are other labels seen for this event but the one shown here, in a block of 9, is from 1973. Issued by the National Federation of Police.
