Mitchell You have an usually beautiful and full French Colonies collection across the board. Did you acquire them as an intact collection, or was it piecemeal? (Hope you don't mind me asking. )

I bought the 6 Scott Specialty volumes in the early 90's. They had a lot of stamps to begin with but I've probably added an equal amount over the years. Several years ago I sold off quite a number of stamps throughout the collection to someone who was willing to pay a high percentage for them. I have not done anything with it since then but need to work on it in the not to distant future.

Jeff, Well I have to say I feel lucky for being able to get them both. I nearly screwed up a couple months ago and did not get the sheet. I had to second guess because of finances but finally figured I could not let it slip through my fingers for $260. Which is the most I've spent on a single item in many years. I had read an article on Jims blog as well as a few other chats and articles developing an interest in that little guy. Getting the used one was a little pricerer than I would have thought, for the following reasons. It was in a lot of Colombian states that had very little value. It was stuck off to the side and was actually cut into a third by the scanner bed. I'm sure the auctioner thought nothing of the stamp, he is either not very knowledgeable in general or his cronies need replacing. Since nothing else of value was in the lot I must assume that I was not the only one spotting that stamp. Pretty much my only interest these days are for the harder to come by stamps in any country. I have been through so many many collections looking at the same old common stamps (95% usually) that I'm generally only interested in the more ellusive items or things I have not seen including cinderellas. Funny thing but the high values are usually the most attractive. For today a page I completed yesterday by adding the middle set. It is my favorite page from Latvia so it's great to finally complete it. I also added 1 each Semi Postal and Airmail sets, so it was a good day for Latvia.

For today a colony you don't see everyday. Diego Suarez is a town that is located at the northern end of Madagascar. The French had a naval port there and from the years 1885-96 it was a French colony (separate from Madagascar) with it's own stamps. Many of the stamps were typical French Colony stamps overprinted or Navigation and Commerce series with it's name inscribed. However there are a few very interesting and primitive stamps in the lot circa 1890. Can't recall the story on these but would guess that they were locally produced because of a stamp shortage. This is a common tale that occurred in many places though-out the globe in the 19th century, in particular. I was going to rescan the stamps but I can't find the pages. I looked though my 7 volumes of French Colonies alphabetically and Madagascar but they aren't turning up. At any rate I think they are very kewl. Shown are all but the postage dues.

All I can find on those Diego Suarez is a little in the Minkus catalog. As you surmised, Minkus says they are provisionals, lithographed locally in sheets of 24 (4x6). The descriptions are interesting. The four vertical 1890s are: 1c Ship flying French tri-color, 5c France & Madagascar united, 15c Union of France & Madagascar, and 25c France (woman wearing helmet). The 1891 is described as sun shining on France, sword and ship. There also is a provisional postage due from 1891 that was printed locally, too. Very nice.

Mitchell: Impressive work, as always! Thanks for displaying them on a thread here. (And you're right -- I really like those Danish "Julen" stamps. They seem to capture the design styles of their times better than most regular postal issues did.)
And I think we all appreciate that you're managing to do all this without a big checkbook, but rather with a lot of knowledge and diligence. Thanks!

Phil, Thanks much for the appreciation. Even an average checkbook for most of my life would have helped out a great deal. I think my love/lunacy of stamps seems to help balance it out. Today showing the 1st three pages of my collection of The Dutch Indies

Woke up this morning and had the crazy urge to combine all the 1911-1936 definitives of Chilean big dogs. Always liked this issue and thought it would be neat to have them all in one page. Took most of the day splicing it together, not sure if it really works for viewing. Scanned at a higher res than the other pages with a size of nearly 2 megs, so I'm not sure how well it will post. Guess it will not post, so you'll have to follow this link

Today the two pages of the obscure Eastern Rumelia or South Bulgaria. Before it's independence from Turkeyin 1885, Eastern Rumelia used stamps of Turkey either overprinted or modified for usage there. Although they look identical the difference is easy to see from a couple feet away. Note the two stamps below, the first stamp is for Turkey and the second is for Eastern Rumelia. As shown by the Red arrow there is an extra line of inscribed text above the line that reads "EMP. OTTOMAN". I don't know what the line reads so if anyone knows, please inform me. The overprinted stamps for the most part have always been pretty pricey. My father gave me a new Scott Classic Specialized for Christmas and I'm very pleased to see dramatic increases in most values, many increases of 3-4 times in the last few years. There exist many fakes of the overprints but I have had them checked by an expert and he has given them the thumbs up. I bought a dealers stock many years ago and much later had little difficulty selling the duplicates on ebay at high percentages of cat. The third stamp in the second row of the 2nd page has a fake overprint. I thought I had returned it but now recall the auction company refunded the cost and told me to keep it. With a cat of $6,500 for the page (not counting that stamp) I hope there are not many other bogus ones. I have several other loose ones that I'm playing with at the moment so this scan and comments are rather fluid at the moment.

Hello, Antonius the line of text above "EMP. OTTOMAN" reads "EASTERN RUMELIA" in Greek. It is supplemented by two other inscriptions with the territory's name (that do not exist on the original stamp) vertically at left and right of the stamp, : the one on the left in French ("ROUMELIE ORIENTALE"), the one on the right in Bulgarian. I also think that the same inscription has been added at the very top in arabic script. Nice stamps as always.

Vasia, Thanks for the info, it certainly is nice to have someone around who knows Greek and English. Someday I need to pick your brain as to the meaning of many of the Greece and possessions overprints and inscriptions. It's curious that they used so many different languages on those stamps. Also curious to me is how the other different inscriptions on the ER stamps escaped my usually keen eye (although my near vision seems to get worse every day)

Today the first page of only 3 of Eastern Silesia. Controlled by Czechoslovakia for a short period after WWI, Czech stamps were used with overprint "S.O." (Silesie Orientale). These stamps were in use from February to September 1920.

Today a few pages from EcuadorEcuador has a great many stamps and is one of the more difficult South American countries in finding the scarcer stamps. Along with most Central American countries and Colombia, they are all countries I have been focusing on lately. I've been making progress but it is slow going. Shown are the 1. first page, 2. the most difficult page (in my opinion) and last 3. A favorite page.

A favorite country of mine, I've had a infatuated with Egypt for as long as I can remember. Upon a pilgrimage there many years ago I received the name Anton Ra which for various reasons evolved into Antonius Ra. Anyway that is how I got the name I use online. My collection has pretty much been at a stand still as I am not seeing auction lots with the items I need. Egypy hase been quite popular these last few years and it is probably not the best time to collect them. Shown are the first 3 pages and a recent airmail sheet that is quite beautiful although the scan does not replicate the Gold well.

Up for today is Eritrea. After it's Italian occupation Eritrea became part of Ethiopia In 1993 it achieved it's independence. All of the stamps I show/have are from the Italian occupation. Shown is the first page, there are many beautiful stamps and sets that deserve a look so follow the country link above.

Today the first page of Estonia. Estonia and the other Balkans, Latvia and Lithuania are some of few countries that I have decided to collect from modern independence. The stamps are of very high quality and have the quirkyness of their predecessors. I have not yet made pages for them and need to get a few more stamps before I put them up online.

Today Ethiopia There were several sets of the first issue of 1895 produced from the years 1901-1911 with different overprints. I've pretty much decided to not to collect them, shown are the first 2 pages of my collection.
