After the Negev (Desert) was included in the United Nations Partition Plan of 1947, the Jewish National Fund issued a series commemorating this. Only two colours but various coloured papers exist and they can also be found with and without values, handstamped 10 & 20 Mils in Violet and with the interim overprint 'Doar'. This 1948 issue was widely used during the siege of various areas of the upcoming and (after May 15th) new State of Israel. Jerusalem was one such City under siege and cut-off for long periods. (see David Marcus issue shown previously). Printed in sheets of 5x2 by the HaOman Press of Jerusalem. Perf 11½. The stamps show the desert with a pipeline running through and an Olive Tree.

1948 Second Alphabet issue. An earlier issue (1940) of 28 stamps were produced in booklets of 7 panes of 4. Each stamp depicted an image of a town or village with the name, the initial or final letter of which made up the Hebrew Alphabet (Aleph Bet). 22 letters, 5 'end' letters and the added form of the letter 'sheen' of 'shin'. ('sin'). For this 1948 Second Issue, sheets were produced with margins all round in 4 colours: Blue on Blue, Red on Grey, Brown on Brown, Brown on Yellow. The latter is shown here ! (I cannot possibly afford them all !) Missing left margin and some creased corners, otherwise quite good for these which are mostly found split into blocks or singles. Printed by the HaOman Press in Jerusalem, Perf 11½. All stamps can be found handstamped '5 Mils' or '10 Mils' as a surcharge, in Violet.

1978 30th Anniversary Issue. These stamps mark the 30th Anniversary of Israel's Independence. The stamp shows a stylized Star of David adjoining the number '30' in Gold with an Olive Branch lying beneath. The design is by Yoram Razov and printed by the Government (stamp) Printers. Sheets of 5x3 with Tabs on the bottom row. Perf 14x13. I don't have a full sheet but I show 3 singles from that bottom row where the inscriptions on the tabs are in Hebrew, Arabic and French. My feeling is that the other two tabs are in English and (maybe) German. A bit more research needed. The best part of the tabs is the stylish intertwining of the Dove of Peace and the Star of David.

1954 Youth Donation Stamp. Marks the time when the Youth of the new State of Israel started participating in and organizing the planting of Trees. Youth groups and organizations have continued with these ideals up to the present day, especially, but not only in the aftermath of some terrible fires of recent years which have destroyed large swathes of forest. Perf 11 and printed in sheets of 4x3.

ADULAM. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adullam-France_ParkThe stamps shown below (not anywhere near complete) are issues by the JNF for their 'Teachers Council' for use by Children for School Projects. Each year different sets of labels were produced on the topic of the studied subject. They issued like this from the Jewish New Year 5714 (1953-54) to 5750 (1989-90). They are attractive issues, not easy to find and often difficult to recognize without prior knowledge or a handy catalogue ! Why ? Most JNF are inscribed thus but these Teacher Council issues are not as can be seen from the examples below which are simply inscribed 'Adulam' in Hebrew. Issue Year 5718 (1957-58) 5 colours of 4 designs (3 designs are shown) Se-Tenant sheets of 5x4, each vertical row(strip) showing the 4 designs. Perf 10½ Watermarked paper (Plum also on unwatermarked) Colours: Blue, Plum, Grey, Green, Pink They depict scenes from the setting up of a new village in the area of Adulam in South-central Israel. (Beautiful area) Trees Workers planting Tractor working Village I will add more as I find them. I wrote about the 'Adulam' issues back on page one. I never did show a full set because they are hard to find but for the first time in my stamp Collecting life I spotted full sheets a few weeks ago and won them ! They arrived yesterday in almost perfect condition.

France 1965. Jewish National Fund Tag to celebrate the 'Revival of Jewish Soil'. A similar design to the first French 'Tag' issued in 1950, this second issue is inscribed "Le Sol D'Israel Renait", 'The Soil of Israel is revived'. Israel and other Nations 'Tags' were used differently to the stamps which were collected, used for learning in schools or affixed to letters and cards. The Tags were for the most part much larger, most often vertically. They were used to celebrate special holidays, Flag Days or events and were displayed in a number of ways at those events or affixed to one's clothing. Some were gummed, some came with a pin. Generally they are much harder to find than the stamps and come at a higher price. There are some though that depict stamps or Philatelic events.

The stamps here are part of a 1949 and 1953 issue entitled 'Zionist Personalities'. They show Poet, Publisher and Translator Chaim Bialik who can be found on some head office issues on Page 3, 4th post from the top, along with other information. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayim_Nahman_BialikThe stamps below are from the Argentina Branch Office in Buenos Aires. They are from the 1953 issue which had Serrated roulettes (13½). Earlier issues were perforated 11½. Both issues were produced for booklets in panes of 2x6.

FRUITS OF ERETZ ISRAEL. Some of these have been shown previously in other topics, most recently by JeffS in his wonderful Oranges theme, thestampforum.boards.net/thread/7020/oranges-citrus-fruit?page=14The pane shown by Jeff had a handstamped fund-raising surcharge of 5 Milliemes which is not listed in my Catalogue. They are very hard to find and most often come at a price. There are single panes on eBay now for over $110 each. So I was lucky to get the two panes for under $40 ! Issued by the Polish Office in Warsaw in 1934, the panes show various fruits, each inscribed in Hebrew. They were printed by Druk Express of Warsaw, Point Roulette 13 and were produced in booklets of 6 panes, 3 of each type. I have never seen a booklet and I cannot even begin to think what one might cost !! Even non-postage stamps have their day ! So here is my prize find and my only purchase since London 2022 (until yesterday). Londonbus1........feeling fruity !!

The 'Tags' below are commemorating Independence/Memorial days in Israel. The example on the right was issued in 1949, one year after Independence was gained. The bottom of the tag is rounded and shows two crossed Flags. The whole is embossed. Rochlin T131 The left example was issued in 1954 to commemorate both Memorial and Independence days as the former is followed at 8pm by the latter. The Tag shows a Flower (Kalaniya) and the crossed flags. It is also embossed. Rochlin T185

The JNF stamps (above) are from the same series as those shown a couple of posts ago and out of the Argentine Office in Buenos Aires. The set of 10 with serrated roulettes (1953) and two from the earlier (1949) issue. (red bottom row, blue top row). These depict Haim Arlozorov (Arlosoroff) a Zionist leader of the Yishuv (Jewish population in Mandate Palestine). Born in Romny (Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire), he spent much of his early life in Germany and studied at Berlin University. He was responsible for helping many thousands of Jews leave Germany in the early-mid 1930's and settle them in Palestine under the Ha'Avara agreement. He was also very active in bringing together Arabs and Jews including from neighboring countries. Because of this he made many enemies. In June 1933 he was assassinated whilst walking along the beach in Tel Aviv. The case was never solved but there are many theories which make for fascinating reading. One theory is that Joseph Goebbels, who was married to his former girlfriend, sent agents to Palestine to murder him because he was jealous !! A short piece on Wikpedia does not do it justice but gives the reader a taste for more !! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haim_ArlosoroffLondonbus1

Issued out of the New York Office (USA) in 1981 this label was produced in a Self-Adhesive format. Comes under the heading 'JNF Labels with pressure sensitive gum' and was produced for Holocaust Day of that year. Inscribed thus top and bottom and to the sides, 'Remember'. In recent years we have been given these before the Holocaust Day Ceremony to 'remember' and for us to affix to our clothing. I will try to find one of the latest ones. I had no idea until I read the catalogue that these were listed and collectable !!

High Holiday Stamps of the New York Office. 1950 (5711) issue depicting a Shofar, sold as a fundraiser at Synagogue Services during the High Holidays to attendees. Perf 12½. A similar issue (for 1953-4) was shown on page 1 of this topic. Most High Holiday stamps were issued in booklets of 5 panes (3x2) of each value. Many issues included a no-value stamp but still included the value tablet in the design. (see example below). I am still searching for the 25c, 50c and $1 values !!

It's been a while since I added something here and there is much to show ! The two Tags shown below are interesting in that they depict Stamps of the JNF as the main part of the design. There are a few more like this but are hard to find. The Tag (Flag) on the left was issued in 1946 on the 25th anniversary of the Jezreel Valley. It depicts the Head Office Jezreel Valley stamp issued at the same time but without a value. Inscribed above the stamp '25th (Anniversary) of the Valley'. The other Tag (1950) has a strong USA connection. The stamp image on the Tag is from the 1949 'Road to Jerusalem' issue showing the monument by the side of the 'Burma Road' built in honour of American Soldier David 'Mickey' Marcus. A Jew who fought in WWII who then went to Palestine after the vote to partition, to help the new State of Israel during the War of Independence. He was made the first General of the Israel Army and was killed by friendly fire shortly after opening the road to the Holy City. He was laid to rest at West Point Cemetery, the only American buried there who died fighting for a foreign army. The Tag is inscribed 'Settlement Day Jerusalem Region. Passover 5710'

Two more tags for today and both issued out of the New York Office. The first one, from 1954, is entitled 'Watch on the Negev' and depicts a lone soldier guarding one of the desert settlements under the night sky. 4 values exist, 5c, 10c, 25c and $_ (number missing). I am still trying to find out why that is. Maybe there were so few and value varied so it was inserted by hand. The second one is from 1961 for Israel Flower Day, celebrating Israel's Bar Mitzvah year. This one exists with 10c, 25c and the 'mystery' $_ value. But that is no longer a mystery as I have just found some info hidden away in the catalogue which indeed confirms what I thought and that the blank space was for various dollar values to be inserted by hand !!

To celebrate the lighting of the first candle on the Hannukiah today, I am showing a couple of Tags from 1969 and 1972. The latter, originally from Hannukah 1971 has been additionally inscribed (or overprinted ?) 'Mothers Day 5732'. Possibly to use up old stocks ? Happy Hannukah to those who celebrate.

I wrote about the JNF 'Diaspora' issues in a 2021 Newsletter article and didn't know then that there were reprints issued by offices abroad. The ones below are from the JNF German Central Office in Berlin (now Dusseldorf) and depict scenes from the Head Office (Jerusalem) issues of 1943 together with a 1946 reprint of the Jezreel Valley issue (shown previously here). 1947, Diaspora and Jezreel Valley. Street scenes of Jewish Streets in Europe. Set of 6 but only 5 are shown as I search for the missing !! Printed se-tenant in panes of 6, straight edges all round, for use on booklets. Perf 11½. Poorer print quality than the Head Office types. In Brown (shown), Reddish Brown and Reddish Orange.
