Towards the bottom of page 1, I showed an item commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Jewish National Fund. The normal stamp was followed by 3 'varieties'. I have found a few more !! 1. Above the regular block of 4 is a pair with a few too many perforations !! In the middle, an Imperf block of 4 with the top two having both Blue and green values, one inverted !!! All good fun. Some interesting bits on those below. A wildly misplaced printing of blue ! Another double print on an Imperf strip with the green inverted and missing the middle stamps !! And finally what might be mistaken for an Imperf strip of 4 has a huge overinking of the brown making it just too dark (and grim !).

Hi Londonbus1
I remember when almost every Jewish house had 1 or more blue JNF boxes.

Jerry B Many still do but mostly for eye appeal these days. There have been a few occasions when I have wanted to buy one for decorative purposes but my wife would not speak to me for a month if I bring any more boxes in the house !! But one can often find them in antique shops and flea markets. One day I might risk it ! In the meantime, just too many things covering the shelves ! Boxes, China, Pigs, Bells, Stamps!, Beanies, Mum & Dad's artwork........the list goes on. But they are attractive.............. jnf.ca/bluebox/The owner of that first box (top left) will be the subject of an upcoming post.......with some rather amusing images !!! Londonbus1.......also an amusing image !!!

A couple of items here from the so-called 'Branch Offices' of the JNF. The first is a High Holidays issue for the Declaration of Independence celebrating the first year. Similar in design to the Head Office (Jerusalem) issue but with the addition of the year and English inscription. The scene depicts David Ben Gurion reading the declaration. This is from the New York Head Office and the early types are notoriously hard to find. This was included in a small JNF lot I won at a local auction in Tel Aviv. Booklet Pane (2x3), Perf 12½ The next one is a set of 4, in pairs, from 1933 and celebrates the 70th Birthday of leading Zionist and JNF founder member, Menachem Ussishkin. In 1923 he became President until his death in 1941. Ussishkin was responsible for buying land in large parts of what was the Mandate Palestine, including the land where I live today !! These stamps, out of the Warsaw Office in Poland, were issued in Booklets of 4 different coloured panes (3x2). The stamps are rouletted 7. The inscription in Hebrew at the bottom reads 'Menachem Ussishkin on his 70th Birthday'. Londonbus1

So, a few days ago I promised a post about the owner of a certain 'Little Blue Box'. Theodore Herzl has been covered in earlier posts in this topic and in Newsletter Articles. So let's have fun with one of the stamp issues from the JNF/KKL commemorating the 'Spiritual Father of the State of Israel'. 1960 Head Office issue commemorating the 100th Birth Anniversary of Herzl. The Bust of Herzl is embossed giving the stamps a special feel and look to them. Issued in sheets of 5x5. Perf 14. Many JNF/KKL stamps are listed 'also found Imperforate', in quantities one can only hazard a guess. A short time ago, back when quiet reigned and stamp collecting was a little easier, I won a small lot of varieties from a local auction. That same auction house has another listing tonight so I hope to win a few more interesting local items. But first, Herzl, 1960 and some varieties, many of humorous appearance ! 1. Right shift of black & embossing. 2a. Offset of blue on gummed side. No black or embossing.Partial blue print on face. 2b. Oh dear ! No embossing, shift of both colors, partial dry print.......... 3a. Partial double print of sage-green colour, shifted. Wrong value (10 for 15) 3b. Double print of Sage-green, shifted. Black shift (?). Wrong value 3c. Black and embossing shift to left. Wrong value 4. Partial missing text in white, double print of some lettering. Wrong value (10 for 15) Partial double print of sage-green 5. Upward shift of embossing. 6. right shift of black There's more, stay tuned !! Londonbus1

1960 Head Office issue commemorating the 100th Birth Anniversary of Herzl. Part Two 7a. Embossing shift to left 7b. Dry print of black. Embossing missing. 7c. Sage green print under blue, slightly awry ! 8. Double black print, one inverted and shifted. upright one (censored) to right. No embossing. 9a. Blue colour shift downwards. 9b. Black shift to right. No embossing. 10a. South-East black shift. No embossing. 10b. Black shift to right. No embossing. 11. Double black print. Small upright black print to right. Huge inverted shift of black downwards (or is it upwards !!) No embossing. 12a. Half strip of (almost complete) dry print of sage green. I did NOT cut the strip. There is no embossing and the evidence of the colour means it also has the wrong value (10 for 15)!! In fact, it is mostly wrong !!! 12b. The only consolation here is that the (imperf) pair are whole. An almost dry print of sage green means the value is wrong (10 for 15). the embossing is here but, would you believe it, it's UPSIDE DOWN !!! 13a. So, do we end on lucky 13 ? Well, not really. But this one at least has only a minor shift although the colour is slightly different !! Oh yes, I almost forgot....no embossing !! 13b. A shift of black to the left. No embossing. 13c. Almost a normal imperf pair (is that normal?) but....no embossing. I hope you have enjoyed this little detour into the tragic world of Errors, varieties, Printers' Waste and security blunders. But I still wonder how many Imperf sheets were printed and if I have the lions share of the examples ? The question is, will I dash off in the search for more ? Absolutely NOT !! After this lot, I hope Mr.Herzl will not be turning in his grave on the promontory named after him in Jerusalem. May he continue to Rest in Peace. Londonbus1.......also a huge mistake !

Western Wall, 1968. A simple stamp with a simple inscription, commemorating an event for which the Jewish population had been waiting for nearly 20 years ! Cut off for the most part since the 1947-48 War of Independence and under the Jordanian Occupation, the 6-day War of 1967 saw Israel win back the right for prayer at the most holy Jewish place. Designed by Zvi Steiner, printed in sheets of 20 (4x5) Perf 10½. The block from the top half of the sheet shown here includes a rather outstanding perforation error !!

Thank you very much. Write in Yiddish or Hebrew?
I am more interested in stamps that are issued in the USSR.

armenin2000 .........I believe all Head Office issues of the Jewish National Fund are inscribed in Hebrew, unless specific to the design topic. What will you do with those items you cannot use for your collection ?

From the JNF Central Office in Germany, these 1947 stamps are reprints in Purple of earlier Head Office issues. Poor quality printing. Printed in Se-Tenant sheets of 16 (4x4). Exist also surcharged issues '2' in red. PALESTINE SCENES.

I recently purchased a box lot, sight unseen, from someone I do buy a lot of stamps from. There was a container full of Israeli stamps and these are some I didn't immediately recognise. After searching and reading I now know that these are JNF/KKL stamps overprinted with "Doar" or Post for use in the interim between the English leaving the post office and the creation of the new postal system of Israel. There are many more which I will post and some cinderellas as well. I have been looking for a Bale catalogue but haven't had any luck with an affordable copy. Someone was kind enough to copy a couple of pages from a very early copy so I have more of an idea now. None of the catalogues I have list these stamps and Colnect don't have them listed and Gene has asked me to contact him about adding them there.

These are a few of the glassines and the catalogue (Simon)details appear to be a specialised catalogue from the numbers and letters.

darrenk , A nice lot of Minhelet Ha'am stamps, thanks for showing. I do not have a Simon (Zimon) catalogue and I have no idea when they stopped publishing it. I found some pages of the 1952 and 1953 editions but only the first two pages of the Interim issues, so none you have shown here. The values given on your glassine envelopes are a little confusing, as are the values in the Catalogue. But it is most likely Prutot, the currency of Israel at that time. But I need to check further. Still looking at the handstamped overprints. Londonbus1 Edit: I am also intrigued by the number of blue handstamps. I doubt they can all be colour changelings. Something else to search for.

Londonbus1, Thank you for the feedback. I've been looking at various sites for copies of different catalogues and haven't come across a Simon at all. Because of the stupid way eBay postage works I often find something at a reasonable price in the US but the postage is $US40-50 to Australia. There is a 1983 Bale for under $10 but $55 for postage! Anyway, it is an interesting lot and material I have never come across before so I'm enjoying the research side of it. I will scan the packet material when I get a chance. I guess it's not easy to know if the overprints are legitimate or not. The stamps all appear to be mint not hinged and mixed with a load of other material which is all good early Israeli stamps. Unfortunately a lot are stamps only and no tabs so that drops their "collectability" for the majority of collectors. It was something I didn't understand initially and I had a few early pages that were in "Crystal Mounts" and picked them up at a club auction for very little. When I opened the mounts I found the majority had tabs and were MNH as well. Some had attached to the stamps but most were good. There was a lot of other material in the container including 8 copies of this (Scott 55) postally used. Scarce to see them off cover with one part of tab and not being from a FDC.

darrenk, Yes, I have the same problem buying bulky lots or books from abroad. I was lucky when I got my Rochlin a friend in the USA gave it to a family member who passed it on to me once they arrived. Like your experience, the postage was more than the catalogue so I wouldn't have got it otherwise. Nice used Israel stamp but pretty much lost most of it's value (and beauty?) without the selvedge !! I continue to be curious about the blue overprints. Hopefully find some time tomorrow to check some more. Londonbus1
