Whilst we are on the subject of the Jewish National Fund (See Admin's 'Information sought by a Forum guest'), I thought I'd show this nice set I won at a local auction last week. Haven't picked them up yet from my friend's Stamp Shop so the scan is from the catalogue. Some singles and info about the issue have been shown previously but just to recap (briefly) : 1946 Fighters for Freedom issue honoring Jews who parachuted into Europe during WW2 to help others, but were captured and executed. The strips are from sheets of 5x7 (5 sets). Printed by the HaOman Press in Jerusalem. As mentioned before (Page 1) the young Lady in the middle of the strip is a particular heroine in our village which is named after her. More recently, we had street signs erected after a long wait and the main road into the village has been named 'Rehov Hannah Senesh'. May she Rest in Peace. Londonbus1

To help our two new members from Israel, ozrit & mbgg, feel welcomed, here are a few JNF Tags. Left: Tag for Tu B'Shvat 1949 (5709). With rounded corners, the tag shows the Israel Flag flying over a tree. Inscribed around the edge "When the leaders of the State convened to establish laws for the State of Israel". Centre and right: Tags shaped like a vertical oval and issued in 1952 for Independence Day. Other colour combinations exist. The tag depicts the Official Seal of the State of Israel with inscriptions above and below. "Jewish National Fund, 5th of Iyar" and below, "Independence Day".

I've scanned the JNF overprinted stamps that were in the glassines. As mentioned before they all had Simon catalogue numbers some with sub categories which are the colour variations for this series from what I have read. Looking at an earlier post from Londonbus1 he has shown the full series in strips of 5 without the postal overprint.

I may, at some point, start another thread for these issues that were overprinted for use on mail during the War of Independence. So these posts may be moved but in the meantime they fit well here. (Just need a bit more time for stamps !!). They really should be a subject by themselves with some very nice Postal History items to go alongside. Londonbus1

Londonbus1 Hi Michael, I have seen numerous red cinderellas such as this format. I am curious about this example with the text AUSTIN TEXAS. What was the theme of this red set if yhou know. This has an amusing take on the Lone Star flag of texas! Thank you, JeffS

Hi JeffS.......I believe we have spoken about this one before. You even sent me a copy (for which I am grateful) This is a Jewish National Fund label from the New York Office, 1939. It is one of 99 stamps issued by the Hebrew Educators Council (USA) in booklets entitled 'JNF Quiz Replies 99 stamps'. 11 panes of 9 (3x3), Perf 12½. The booklets were accompanied by cards which asked questions in Hebrew and English and there were spaces for the stamps by each question. I have never seen a complete card/booklet nor am I likely too. Single stamps come up occasionally but are not cheap so I pass them by. Most of the stamps depict scenes, stories, personalities or events from Judaism and Palestine which brings me to your stamp, Austin Texas. This stamp is one of only two representing the USA. One covers funds made in the USA by the Jewish National Fund but quite why Austin was chosen and what the question was to get that answer is not known to me. I have never seen a quiz card nor have I found one online. So that is a mystery.......one to be solved still. I will move our posts to the JNF section. Londonbus1

JeffS.......a quick search tells me that there is a vibrant and active Jewish Community in Austin and many JNF events are held there, likely because of this. How far back this goes I have not yet found, so still looking for a more historic connection (1939).

A souvenir sheet from 1985 marking the 50th Death Anniversary of Baron Edmund de Rothschild, the so-called 'Father of the Yishuv'. Inscriptions both on the sheet and marginal in Hebrew and English. The stamps are perforated 13x14. Rothschild's portrait by Hermon Shetrok. The bottom left stamp shows an entrance to Ramat HaNadiv, beautiful gardens and burial site of the Baron. Other sheets exist for this issue.

Couple of interesting items, again picked up in local auctions. First two scans are a part booklet from the 1918 'Herzl issue'. Stamp and similar items have been shown previously, halfway down page 2 of this topic. Half of the panes remain and the front cover is missing but the back cover is interesting because it gives the cost of the booklet in the currencies of the countries to which they are shipped. So 40c in the USA, 1s 8d in Britain and Empire etc. ! The text is in Hebrew and Yiddish and tells me there were 20 labels in the booklet (only the 1918 issue contained 20). This issue was printed and dispatched from The Hague in the Netherlands but I have no idea of printer as yet. The cover of the booklet below remains but there are panes missing. These are from another Herzl issue and apart from the dark green stamps, the cover tells me they were printed by the Goldberg Press in Jerusalem so the year of issue was 1938. All JNF stamps from 1921 were printed in Palestine (later Israel). These booklets were of 6 panes (2x2) and the stamps Perf 11½. The front of the booklet cover says 'Herzl Stamps of Keren Kayemet L'Israel' (Jewish National Fund). The back cover has 'Jerusalem' and the year '1937-38' in the centre and below 'The Goldberg Press Jerusalem'. Interesting, given the relationship between the Jews and the British at the time, that 'Palestine' was in brackets in the English inscription. Londonbus1

Today is the beginning of the Festival of Purim, from the Book of Esther. Celebrations are somewhat muted for the most part because of the war, but the 'show must go on' not least for the Children. On my walk around the village this morning, the young ones from the Kindergarten were proudly making their tour complete with fancy Dress, a long held tradition. So today I will show a JNF sheet for Purim, issued in 1986, the year I first came to the Holy Land. The sheet 'depicts a nobleman, Haman, leading the way for Mordechai and quotes the words of Haman as commanded by King Ahasuerus: "thus shall it be done unto the man who the King delighteth to honor". (from the scroll of Esther).' (Ack: Society of Israel Philatelists, Education Fund). The sheet was designed by Asaph Berg and printed by E.Lewin Epstein. Stamps are Perf 14x13, Multicoloured & Grey and Black. rebooting.com/glossary/purim/To end the post, here is my latest little Grandson, 1 year-old last week, in his Purim costume. There are many acres of Avocado plantations around our village, a source of income for us, so it was fitting that for his first Purim he should dress up as an Avocado !!!! I hope he will see and experience Peace and friendship in his lifetime. Londonbus1

Both of these panes come from Booklets of 5 panes of the same value. They were issued out of the New York Office as part of an ongoing series of 'High Holidays' stamps. (New Year). Each series has a number of values, or 'no value'. (decided by the purchaser) The first pane is from 1952, Part A, the 'Dove of Peace' and shows the Dove flying over a field. Inscribed in Hebrew, "May you be inscribed (in the book of life) for a good year". Perf 12½. The pane below is from 1967 entitled 'Sheaf of Wheat and Grape Cluster'. Perf 12½. The Hebrew inscription is the same as the one above.

Another High Holidays issue from the New York Office. This one from 1957 and again various values and 'no value'. Depicts a sailor in a prayer shawl blowing on a Shofar. I am guessing the straight-cum-rough edges are from the booklet selvedge, probably roughly separated !! It would mean the booklets were issued with both left and right stapled margins (selvedge).

Bit strange these two issues are ! Very seldom are 'Specimen' overprints found on JNF labels and here are two with perforation anomalies from different offices. The image is not the best but I only won these last night so it was taken from the auction. Will replace with better when I have picked them up. The left example is from 1962 and marks the transfer of the remains of German-Jewish Philosopher Moses Hess. The labour-Zionist was once a great friend of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels before a fall-out. Hess was buried in Cologne in 1875 but his remains were re-interred in the Kinneret Cemetery in Northern Israel in 1961. The block was taken from a sheet of 10x5 with a central gutter. It is missing the vertical perfs. The other block (right) is missing the horizontal perfs. The sheets of this issue were cut to make up into booklet panes as can be seen by the different values. This is from the New York Office and like some seen over the last couple of days, is a High Holiday issue. From 1953, it depicts a Shofar with an Ethrog (Etrog) and Lulav (from a Date Palm). Perf 12½. With same hebrew inscription as those previosly shown. Correction: Maybe the horizontal perfs are not missing !!!

1960 issue remembering the 100th Birth Anniversary of Henrietta Szold, and inscribed thus. The stamps were issued in sheets of 30, 5x6. Perf 10½. Exists also Imperforate but I have never seen one up to now. Born in the USA, Henrietta Szold was a prominent Jewish Zionist leader who founded the Hadassah Women's Organization of America. Later in Palestine she founded the Ihud Political Party and spent her later years in support of a Binational solution to the Arab-Jewish conflict.

Another from the New York Office, this one in 1961 and again with different values. Apart from the usual booklets, this one also comes in special sheets of 6x7 and perf 11½. The booklet stamps are perf 12½. The stamps were issued for the Bar Mitzvah of the State of Israel and are inscribed thus. (13th Anniversary of Israel). They depict two Hebrew letters, 'yud' and 'gimel' as part of a Menorah. The letters have a numerical value of 13.
