Only stamping for me today was scanning an Easterseals sheet and replacing more of the images that members had hosted on non-secure websites.

susiecc , You probably already know the answer -- it is up to you to determine how you want to collect things. I prefer my duck stamps off paper so that they present a neat (and uniform) appearance when mounted in my album. I do, however, have two ducks on licenses. I've opted to keep them that way as they provide good examples of how the Federal stamps were used. Scott RW33 on a New York license: Scott RW44 and Nebraska A1 on a Nebraska license:I haven't seen any catalog or other source that indicates stamps on licenses are valued at a premium to used stamps off-paper. Should any of our members be aware of information to the contrary, I'd appreciate being informed. One caution pertaining to separating the stamps from the licenses is that the signature ink might bleed/smear and present an unsightly appearance.

My Unitrade indicates that the "first day of issue" was December 7, 1898 and that the "Official First Day" was December 25, 1898.
I'm not sure how the two differ and would hope that someone here could enlighten me.
EDIT: Thanks, Peter.

As time permits, we'll continue work on replacing blocked Photobucket images, as well as replacing images hosted on sites that are not secure (i.e., HTTPS).
Images that were previously hosted on the Grumpy Old Men's Club (thegomc.com) are no longer recoverable.
If you have images hosted on your own site and it is not yet secure, adding an SSL certificate would greatly reduce our workload.

I acquired this stamp in October but am just now getting around to placing it in my album. It is an unused, hinged $1 rose lake stamp featuring Canvasbacks taking flight (Scott RW2; 1935).

If I'm reading the International Postage Meter Stamp Catalog/Italy correctly, the impression was made by a Pitney Bowes (digital) counter service machine in the Gravina in Puglia post office on November 22, 2019 -- the catalog identifies it as PO19.

I collect U.S. IRC's, but have acquired a number of them from other countries in the process. The U.S. stopped selling them in 2013 however, in some countries they remain an option for the prepayment of return postage from a foreign country. Here are a few examples from other countries (design types are from Scott): Sweden (Type B) Denmark (Type C) Brazil (Type D) France (Type E) Great Britain (Type F)

The Post Office Department's Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code was introduced in 1963 -- it became mandatory for large mailers in 1967. This "ALWAYS USE ZIP CODE" slogan cancel on a reply card postmarked in December 1966 was part of the USPOD's effort to encourage its use.

In this thread, I previously wrote of my disappointment in having a cover for my hometown collection apparently lost in the mail. The cover had been an ebay purchase made on December 28th from a seller located in Wisconsin. When it had not been received by mid-January, I asked the seller to verify it had been shipped and she promptly refunded my purchase. Today, the cover arrived. It was postmarked in Milwaukee on December 30th. The envelope that carried the purchase gave no indication of any reason for the delay. Tomorrow, a check will be on its way to the seller.

By 1933, most people would have known that "Airmail Saves Time." But, apparently, some in Boston still didn't know that they needed to "Address Your Mail to Street and Number."

tonight I seem to be soaking a great many stamps from the Netherlands, especially the 1949 Queen Juianna series and I notce many have the 202 watermark which is not mentioned in Scotts? ... I came across this thread while looking for blurred Photobucket images and wanted to point out that Scott does indicate that the 1949 Queen Juliana issue (Scott 306 to 318) is watermark 202. Scott's listing convention is that when a watermark is shown, all subsequent listings will have that watermark until a different watermark or "Unwmk." is noted.

This cover was acquired with a purchase of items for my 1935 China Clipper collection. It commemorates the inaugural flight of United Air Lines' 15-1/4 hour, 3-stop service from San Francisco, California to New York, New York on May 5, 1937. The aircraft featured on the cover is United's Mainliner, a Douglas DC-3 with a cruising range of more than 1,500 miles. More information on this aircraft may be viewed here.
