Very scarce Hampden Cancelling Machine Company of Holyoke Mass. These cancelling machines were in operation from 1898-1905. This example is unusual to find escpecially since it is used as a received backstamp. Dated May 7, 1900 from Easton PA., it is the two line, small font variety. The second picture (front of cover is for reference).

Edith,
Excellent! I like the way you have separated between handstamp cancels and machine cancels on the page with 1c U76 Columbian cut squares. That's a good start to displaying what you have and at the same time breaking it down into the varieties. One suggestion would be to add the year of issue.

I just tried it and it didn't show much more than what I could see with my loupe. A little bit more but not enough to read it. This is a tough one and I many never identify it with 100% certainty unless I run across another one. Luck be with me! I'll end the string until I find more info (if I do)
Thanks for everybody's input

I'll see what research I can do looking at the Postmaster General reports. I had a suspicion that it was not Troy-Boston. I don't have a problem with a black PM. I've run into some discrepencies like this before with my fancy cancels on U58 and U59. Skinner and Eno sometimes list either black or blue in their cancel catalog and I have some covers that are the opposite color. I appreciate all this help.
I'm really enjoying solving this mystery.

On another site, I was told it was the Troy and Boston RR which I have my doubts about. Does the Towle reference have info on this railroad?
Thanks

I need help identifying this cover I just received. It is from 1865-1970 period (based on the U59 Postal Stationery). It starts with Boston and is a RPO. I checked references that I have and cannot find one. My best guess based on some more internet research is the Boston & Providence RR. I did find a period advertisment for this mail run in a Boston Commerce Magazine. It was an express run. between Providence, Boston and New York. Also looking at the size of the words in the Postmark that would seem to fit the font size. I did search for examples of this RR Postmark online but did not find much. Unfortunately the return address of NYC was hand crossed out so I don't know exactly where it was posted from Thanks for any help and comments are appreciated Mike

Just for Fun; 1915 Crown of Darius Issue, MH. Scott #560-568 Darius was a worshipped hero king of Old Persia. He was crowned around 400 B.C. and made the Perdsian Empire the greatest empire of the time. He fought the famous battle of Marathon from which a messenger ran on foot at top speed for two days to Athens to bring tidings of the battle.

My contribution to the Postmark Calendar for May 2. Berwick, PA, Manuscript date Within faint red postmark on U58, 3 cent Nesbitt, Posted May 2, 1866 (Based on Philadelphia Received Backstamp Type Not Shown). Sent to E.C. Knight. E.C. Knight was one of 11-12 Sugar Refineries in Philadelphia at the time one of the last surviving independent sugar refineries in Philadelphia before they were purchased in 1892. They were purchased by the American Sugar Company after a Supreme Court Case in which the argument by the government that it would create a monopoly was struck down by the court. This cover came from an auction lot I purchased a while ago that consisted of the entire lot addressed to this same company. It included many hand carved fancy cancels (note - no cancel at all on this cover) that I'll post some examples of in the future. Thanks for looking

I ended up purchasing a LuxLED Dimmable LED Desk & Table Lamp - Touch Sensitive Control - 7-Level Brightness & 5 Temperature Setting Color Mod for $18.59 from Walmart (original list price of $129)including free shipping and of course no tax (living in Oregon has its additional benefits!).
I received it Friday and used it yesterday for the first time and have to say it out performs my old OTTLite. I'm very pleased with the purchase and it allows me to look at watermarks of postal stationery paper and helps me with my collecting and identifying.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Welcome Ray, I have recently joined TSF myself and have enjoyed posting and contributing. I collect US U58 and U59 covers as well as early US Machine Cancel Covers. In addition I have an extensive amount of worldwide (mainly older stuff) that I've accumulated over they years, some with value some of the inexpensive variety. When I get to my 50 posts, I will be putting some up for sale and others up for free drawings.

I looked through my stash of covers sent to me and found this one. It was an Ebay return and the buyer reused the original envelope I sent to him. When I posted it, I used a stamps.com home printed stamp and it can be seen that it was not canceled per the regulations. When the sender returned it to me and reused it, he crossed out my original stamp and partially covered it with selvage from the 1863 USPS Civil War issue. He then affixed a new forever stamp most likely from the same Civil War pane. Interestingly, the stamp itself was not postmarked but sent through the canceling machine and the spray on canceled the modified stamp.com postage adhesive. The clerk at the sending post office nor the clerk at the receiving end in Sacramento bothered to cancel the 1st class stamp.

I find this thread fascinating. Why would the USPS require you to pay for an additional first class stamp just for a clerk applied postmark? Also, I guess that a machine won't do it because it reads the code on the personalized/ preprinted stamp and it tells it not to cancel it. Is that correct?

I'm faced with too much philatelic material (primarily covers but also some stamps). I would like to donate several large boxes of these and make sure that it is given to a tax deductible organization. I'm preparing to send up to $5000 worth to the APS but probably will still have more to donate and don't want to go through the hassle of appraisals for all of this. I know that the covers are each worth a minimum of $1 and some up to $25 (I sell on Ebay and can do my own appraisal),. So I plan to spread the donations out to different organizations.
Any ideas on what other qualified tax deductible organizations I can donate to? I also have thousands of postcards as well to donate. I'm not getting rid of everything, just trying to be reasonable with what I keep and want to share what I've accumulated over the years?
Thanks...Mike

I think I'll go with an LED type, but now with all these choices I need to decide which model. Most likely a desk lamp style with adjustable brightness and a goose neck. Now I'll start comparison shopping. Once I get one, I'll provide my own review.
Thanks for all the replies/information...Mike

So what is the better type of bulb for our hobby, an LED or halogen or Compact fluorescent bulbs? I'm not sure which provides the truest color and the least amount of eyestrain. The Ottlite I had was the CFL but a con is the bulbs are quite expensive and it provides quite a bit of glare on shiny surfaces. A pro of the CFL is that it does not generate much heat at 13 Watts.
What about the other types? I'm not crazy about a halogen if it get's too hot to touch but maybe it's less strain on the old eyes?
I'm mainly interested in looking at postmarks as opposed to colors of stamps but I also need it for reading my reference material and for my other desktop hobby of building plastic models. I never really gave buying a desktop lamp much thought before but now it seems more important to me.

I've been using an Ottlite that just quit on me. I replaced the bulb but it still doesn't work. I was wondering what desk lamps other members use and any pro's/con's about them. I'm trying to decide what to buy as a replacement. All comments are welcome.

I purchased a group of Montana covers and postcards over a year ago and paid about $1 each for them and set them aside until I decided to research and sell some of them. Well I found three with postmarks from Piegan Montana Territory (now a discontinued post office, DPO) and had no idea of the value so I finally found one very similar on a Kelleher Auction from 3 years ago. It turns out the same postmark and cancel (different date) sold for $300! Guess what I'm doing with the cover shown? That's right I'm listing it on Ebay. Here is a scan of this treasure

I use to also get those orange stamp bags from H.E. Harris at Woolworths and they were still on paper. I would spend hours soaking and sorting. It's been a long time since I did that.

The old days of going to the stamp shop as a kid was to me a thrill like none other. My dad would drop me off and let me stay for hous.
The local dealer in the town I grew up in would have those shiny new Apollo issues displayed in counter books. I would flip through the pages looking at all the issues I wish I could have and occasionaly could afford a new set like Liberia 549-554 and C186.
But the most fun I had was when he would go back to the safe and pull out stockbooks full of used stamps like Germany and I could find varieties and nice cancels. He would provide me a copy of the latest Scott's catalog, a pencil and piece of paper and let me write down the price of each one then total them up and sell them to me for 1/3 cat. price. I would spend hours and hours at his table and talk to him and listen to other more experienced collectors and learn new things all the time.
One interesting tidbit about this dealer, he was also the town's undertaker and his store was only open on weekends!
Most brick and mortar stores are gone and you have to go to shows to get some of the same experience..but it's not the same thrill.

Edith,
Without getting into a lot of detail, what you have are two of the three paper types used for production of this issue. The three types are;
White (Tyronne Paper) Blue/Gray (Manistique Paper) White (Weyerhauser Paper)
This issue was produced during a period when paper was changed over to recycled paper. I know these can be identified with the full envelope based on the recycle logo, size and knife as well as color. I don't have the ability to tell you which one(s) fluoresce (my light died and I haven't replaced it) but can do some research when I have time (unless another collector has this info).
All three of these were printed with a tag to the right of the design (like you have shown on the 21c white barn postal card). Unfortunately your cut square are a little to small to show this.

I use PhotoScape which is really easy to use and is quick. Once you get use to it, like any software, I find it very intuitive and allows quick easy rotation, resizing and combining of pictures quickly.
