So, at the suggestion of tomiselsj, I present this scan to see if anyone can tell me if these are different or not. the stamp on the left appears taller. Could one be rotary and the other be flat press? I welcome any input. thanks!

Thanks for sharing! I rather like this issue. I'll have to watch for this sheet for my collection. I like that initial cover in this thread as well.

Always wanted to do a collection of JFK stamps. His funeral was on my first birthday, so somehow I've always felt a connection to him. Might still get around to that collection.

Thank you! Apparently it doesn't change anything immediately. I noticed a giveaway that I'd like to put my name into, but I'm still denied access to replying to such threads. I'm sure that will update soon.

Boy, doing a little research on APS here and on other forums sure opened a vault of information. Seems that there's some nonsense going on with lawsuits? And to be honest, most...notall, just most...of the benefits offered with membership don't really seem like anything I'd take advantage of. And I'll be honest: the magazine didn't really offer me anything. Perhaps I got a hold of a couple of issues that didn't quite measure up to typical issues? Hard to say. I'm just not feeling the need to join. I'm not feeling like I've missed anything after 45 years of collecting without being a member.

Thank you, Steve. But it's not a one time fee, correct? There's an annual fee to be a member?

I do have a loupe, no problem there. I think my biggest question is...WHERE are you measuring? Is the frame of a stamp design thick enough to throw off the measurement if you don't start at the right spot?

I've seen this pop up from time to time, and I finally decided to make it a topic. How many times do we see a post about someone claiming they found a US #594? Identification always seems to boil down to perforations and measuring the frame size precisely. What I'd like info on, is how to makes those measurements. It's a precise dimension of millimeters we are looking for, and it seems to me that the frame of the design itself might be a couple of millimeters, throwing things off.
So, I'm asking for a little lesson in how to measure frame size of a classic stamp. Not only 594's, but any classic engraved stamp where those measurements are crucial for identification.

When I recently acquired a friend's mother's collection, I found among it some presidential inauguration FDCs. They were for Reagan and Bush I, and came in binders. Neat stuff, but I wonder how much the poor woman paid for all of these, versus how little they are probably worth today.

What will I gain from membership, aside from the magazine? I'm not a high-end collector by any means. How often is the magazine published? I've actually had a couple of copies of it sent to me by Scott English through another forum to whet my appetite. They had good stories, but, I felt, an awful lot of ads for auction houses...which, again, is beyond my wallet and collecting interests.

Not to be picky, BG, but it would be a quarter of a millennium, not of a century, but I got your meaning. As far as sending ideas to the USPS...we can do that? How is that done? Yes, I have great interest in this particular anniversary. I'm a history buff, particularly of that era. Back at the time of the Bicentennial, when I began collecting, that became one of my main worldwide stamp interest. I was amazed back then at the countries who issued stamps for the event. Of course, now I know many of those were CTOs, but they still fascinated my young self and my budding interest in American history.

Those 1926 era stamps were great. I'm hoping we can get stamps commemorating many revolution events, hopefully some new subjects not yet honored. Multi-stamps sheets, souvenir sheets, all kinds of great stuff. Maybe something similar to what's been done recently for the War of 1812 and the Civil War. But on a larger scale, because, frankly, this event is bigger.

Too early to start talking about this? I had to look up the correct term, and yes, that's what a 250th anniversary is called. This anniversary is now a bit more than 8 years away. We got our first Bicentennial stamps in 1971, 5 years before the event. What does anyone think or has anyone heard? Will it be commemorated as much as 1976? Will we get a ton of new stamps for the topic over a period of years? The Bicentennial arrived just a few years after I began collecting. Being a young history nerd, I loved it. I'd rather have a bunch of new stamps on this topic than more stamps about Disney characters, flowers, or international food. Thoughts?

I collect the new USPS issues, but I don't enjoy a lot of the subjects lately. So many seem frivolous and silly. I long for the old days of historic commemoration on new stamps. I'm actually looking forward to what we may get in a few years for the American Revolution Sestercentennial. Hopefully as much good stuff as we got in 1976.

...This can be my toe dipping into the revenue stamp pool. Be careful; there is an eddy in that pool that can pull you under before you realize what is happening to you! That's cool. I can swim. I've reached a plateau with my U.S. stamps in recent years. I'm getting to the point where I only need the expensive stuff, and I keep up on the new releases. That's why I started a Canada album about 10 years ago, and a Great Britain album last year. Maybe I need to start looking at revenues as another outlet. Once I get Canada up to date, that is. And my worldwide stuff. GB is still new, I've got it up to date. My wife looks at it all and just shakes her head.

Wow! Those newspaper stamps are pretty!
I wasn't really expecting that my doc stamps were worth much...didn't care. Not selling them anyway. I thought the $3 stamp might be a bit more rare than the others. I'll find a place in my collection for this entire document and keep it intact. My aunt would have wanted it that way. This can be my toe dipping into the revenue stamp pool.

So what can anyone tell me about U.S. documentary stamps? Specifically, series 1942 stamps, as they have that imprinted on the face. I recently came across a warrantee deed that belong to my late great aunt. It's dated 9-14-42, and it has a number of doc stamps affixed. three 10c, one 5c, one 50c, and one $3 stamp. I know nothing about doc stamps, so I'm looking for a bit of education. I'll post a scan later if anyone is interested in seeing the document. img free

tom...So can we assume that postal clerks know the values of all stamps that don't have a number value on them? For instance, the old A, B, C, etc. stamps, or a new rate stamp that says "First Class" that was replaced later with a number-valued stamp? Seems a stretch to think that they'd know them all.

Not so much a stamp "collecting" questions as a stamp "usage" question...
Can a stamp marked "First Class" be used as current postage like a "Forever" stamp, regardless of the original paid value of the stamp? I received one on mail today, and it got me wondering. The one I received today was a breast cancer semi-postal, so maybe that's why it was ok? I know those are still available to purchase. I have a stash of "First Class" stamps I could use for postage, but have not because I don't know the original face value of the stamps. I'm always afraid to use stamps that don't have a clear value on them, as I figure that it'll get kicked back if they can't easily determine the amount of postage I've attached to the envelope.
